Back from Mobile....

First off, let me say this...I am pissed, depressed, really depressed, embarrassed, in shock and heart broken for the Seniors who had to see their BG careers end this way. It certainly wasn't what I envisioned on the plane down.

MobileBama is a great dude and I can't thank him enough for all he did for us. Pat's was a bomb partying with everyone, the parade was excellent and we had an awesome tailgate. I must have dropped close to $150 on merchandise that now may sit in the closet for a few months. I am not looking forward to going to work tomorrow and having to eat Sh*t for what happened.

I'm not here to point fingers, place blame or take it out on anyone cuz it won't do any good. Tulsa kicked our ass up and down and both ways sideways. That offense is SCARY...did they run up the score? Possibly. But we didn't do a whole lot to stop them. I was pissed last night on the way back to the hotel and at the same time totally dejected about what happened. So much so I missed my turn and ended up in a neighborhood I probably shouldn't have been in. It took me a while to get back to the hotel and by then, with a flight at 9:50 waiting in Pensacola, tried to get some sleep. But I couldn't sleep.

I know this is just a game...and kids playing the game. And coaches, human beings, that are calling the shots. If I didn't care so phucking much, it wouldn't sting as badly as it does. This really hurts me today...and yet the sun came up. Some people have lost their jobs and houses in this country and are in a whole lot more hurt than seeing your team get the living crap kicked outta them. I am trying to keep this in perspective, ya know?

Mobile was a great time and with the exception of the game, I had a blast. I was able to hang with my parents and we checked out the USS Alabama and some other things. I got to hang with my Falcon brothers and sisters in a place far away from Bowling Green, Ohio. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I even upgraded my coach seat to business from Atlanta to Akron for $40 today. Ahhh....the leg room!

There is nothing positive about setting a record for the worst bowl loss in college football....63 to phucking 7. ouch.

I hope everyone made it back safely and had no problems. For now, I'm going to take a few days off and regroup. Life is full of ups and downs...now I know how all the OSU fans felt last year and it isn't so much fun laughing at what happened to them. It happens to every team at one time or another.

When I look back on the 2007 season, I'll remember the exciting opening day win at MN, the 4 game winning streak and the BiG win over the school up north. We got our asses handed to us a few times this year and that's exactly what happens in life. Nobody stays on top forever....ask Nebraska...or Miami (FL)...or Kansas State....or Florida State.

Thanks to all that made the trip down and making it a fun time. For now, I'm going to go watch OSU/LSU.

The spring game is only a few months away...time to turn the attention to the hoops and hockey teams....

Congrats Tulsa on winning the game by a huge amount. I never thought that would happen and keep thinking I'm going to wake up and see this was just a bad dream. Sorry, Sparky...the Sandman has come and gone.

Whew. Freak, I am glad you made it back in one piece. I had visions of you spontaneously combusting or something.
You described the feeling of being there pretty well. I just can't find the words to describe how bad it was.

Being at the hotel with the parents in the days up to the game, we could see how much the senior parents were emotional just about it being the last game....let alone how it came out. It had to be tough for them.

To all the students we met that made their way down....and the band for just being great- thanks for all the support. We alumni are proud of you.

AND, Noah, honey, it wasn't your fault. I decided to act like we never played a game. So the streak can't be broken if we didn't play a game. I'll stop now.
It was great to see 87 and Noah and Major and Mrs. Major and of course, Freak.

Glad to hear you guys made it back, Freak and AAF. I could only imagine how tough it was watching it in person.

Like Freak said, it is just a game and life goes on. The good news about sports is that hope springs eternal. The hockey team that was picked to finish dead last in the CCHA is a Top 25 team, and the men's basketball team got a huge win against OU.

I'm sure by April, all of us will be excited about who we have returning and who we have coming in. Tough losses bring forth character, and I honestly believe the team will be better for this game come next season.

I think it would serve well for most people to just forget about what happened on Sunday night and focus our efforts on the current BG teams in action. They deserve as much support as we've given the football team all year.

The questions we have will take care of themselves. We have no control over the outcomes, and while we have opinions, they will likely have little merit in what happens. That's why the guys who get paid to make those decisions are where they are, and it would probably be best if we let things play out, rather than argue over the same point for 3 months.

For all Falcon fans, we had a great football season. We only lost one game at home, many players stepped forward and with another year to mature and learn, next year looks very bright. Let's hold our heads high for a wonderful season many of us thought would never happen, and look forward to the things to come.

I, myself, have just arrived back in BG. After leaving Mobile at 10am this morning we finally pulled in. Here's just a couple bullet points from my view:

- That game never happened. We just decided to make a random trip to Mobile at the same time. But honestly, I'm just now realizing what happened last night. More than anything it was a shock to those of us at the game. I've never had to watch a close family member get the crap kicked out of them, but this is about as close as it will come.

- MobileBama: You were the perfect host and more. I haven't talked to a single person who had anything bad to say about Mobile (since the game didn't happen). I got a picture of you and me I'll be sure to get put up here.

- It was great to finally meet some AZZ'ers. I'll be looking forward to the Spring Game so we can all meet up again (if not sooner).

So in review: this is probably the best time I've ever had in college. I only have pity for our seniors and the way their team let them down (starts at the coaches and ends with the guy keeping the slack for Brandon's head set). I'm not really going to say much more than that, because it's already been said. I'll just close by saying that I spent hundreds of dollars on this trip, and I don't regret it at all.

Mike, for YOUR sake (and all the others too), I'm really sorry that your bowl experience had to end like this.... obviously, the last Mobile trip was an absolute blast for Joyce and me, (and the others who came too). No one ever wants to see a game like this...and I'm probably including Tulsa people too, who expected a closer game. I know if there's anyone on the AZZ boards who'll bounce back from this one, it'll be you...and you can "lead" the rest of us out of our depression!!!

Smoothing sailing back to Philly; arrived home around 7:30 p.m.

always - thanks for the kind words. I have to say, Noah was pretty much shaken to his core (thanks to Mitch for his consoling words after the game) by this game. I will say that seeing Pete Winovich with his family after the game put the whole thing in a different light.

But as he talked about the game with Mrs. 87 last night, Noah's eyes still welled up. We showed her the picture of Noah & Pete after the game, and Noah explained that Pete was senior and this was his last game ... well, he really got choked up.

This one will take a lot longer to get over, that's for sure.

Finally got home about 3 this morning after a late night flight into Columbus. Aside from the game itself it was an enjoyable weekend. It was great meeting in person guys like FalconFreak, Dayon's Den, Schad, and all the other AZZ'ers at the tailgate.

Freak--I love your passion for all things BG and it was fun to experience it in person.

Dayon's Den--Thanks to you and MajorFalcon for your hospitality at the tailgate. Greatly appreciated it.

Aside from my annual post on men's basketball futility a few moments ago, this is my first post since I got back from Mobile.

I haven't been on strike or anything. I just knew there was going to be an incredible gnashing of teeth here at AZZ.com when I got back. I didn't want to face the chore -- and it would have been a chore -- of sifting through those posts, so I kept putting it off.

Also, for the record:

-- work has kept me busy.
-- for reasons that are obvious to any Democrat, MSNBC has been gripping television lately
-- I've got a side project going that may turn into a book or something (but who knows?)

So.

Here's my clearest football memory: When it became 28-0 or 35-0 or whatever, I walked up to the top of the stadium and looked down, because I just couldn't bear to look at the field. That's when a helpful local suggested that I not jump.

But enough about football.

Set that aside, and I actually had a fantastic time in Mobile. I'm actually laughing as I type this because it was such a good time.

Shouts out:

-- I got a chance to get to know Freak, Mitch, 87 and several others much better. These are all fine human beings. In fact, I've toyed with the idea of becoming a westsider next football season. I probably won't -- I'm a big guy who likes his elbow room -- but these are all people I want around me if ever the Falcons are shellacked like that again.
-- MobileBama is in a class of his own. You all know he's a fine unofficial tour guide. What you all don't know is the lengths he will go as a tour guide. He's a class act.
-- Next time I see Ryan Autillo, I will buy him a couple beers. I was bit preoccuipied when I ran into him on Dauphin Street. I'm sure he understands, but still: The beers will be on me, Ryan.

Oh, and a word of advice to my feathered friends: If we are blessed with the opportunity to play in Mobile again, I urge you to work in a side trip to Gulf Shores on a warm sunny day. I did that on Monday before I flew out and it was well worth the trip.

That's about it.

Considering my track record these past couple of months, I'm not sure how often I'm going to be poking my head in here. But life is good. I had a great time down there meeting so many of you, even if I haven't been jabbering about it here.
