I think OSU is classless and yet they had the backups in early in the 3rd quarter against Northwestern. Still I don't know if I call what Tulsa did classless. More like stupid, risking injuries to their starters and not milking the clock with such a stupidly big lead. The hit on Smith was defn helmet to helmet and NEEDED to be a 15 yard penalty. I have no idea if he intended to do that or not, but he did do it.
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

For me, I could care less about Tulsa leaving in their starters and scoring more. I have a feeling that they would have still been scoring with their 2nd teamers last night. We played awful, terrible, crapy, whatever you wanna say. I do not if we were not prepared, out coached, over confident, or what, but either way, they owned us and they deserved to be proud of their victory. Congrats to your program and I wish you the best of luck.

On the other hand however, I believe that it comes down to morals. For me, if I were a D 1 college coach, I would have pulled my starters at the start of the 4th quarter in that game. Seein how I have coached a whole total of ZERO games, I know that means nothing. The reason why I love Jim Tressel so much is because he always wins with the highest of class and wouldnt even run up the score on the state up north. I can understand wanting to break records. As a player, breaking records is fun and you want to play to the best of your abilities. Now I do not know if the players asked the coach if they could stay in to break records or if it was his idea, but I personally would rather be a player known as someone who played with sportsmanship. When you are winning by 49 points and there is only a couple of minutes left, you should never pass for a touchdown. Never. If you run it in, shame on us for not stopping you.

My last point I want to say is it doesnt matter how many records a person breaks in their lifetime if people have a negative opinion about them. I am not saying any of Tulsa's players or coaches are bad people, but to me, I think they went over the line. A football player could break every record known to man and have done it by running up the score and having poor sportsmanship. I believe that if this were to happen, then this person would not be thought of as one of the greatest players ever to live, but more as an example of what kind of person you should not be.

Again, I am not saying that any of their players or coaches are bad people. Just to make that clear. But what I am saying is that there is a line for breaking records and sportsmanship. For me personally, no record is worth losing a chance to make a friend. Records are meant to be broken, but friendships can last a lifetime.

Fred: My point was each of the 3 main players in question were not horribly over their marks. An extra 20 yards here or there, but they were not in grossly in excess of what was needed to get the record. What's more, live stats are sometimes revised - it would be foolish to pull them and receive this criticism and then have the stats revised 5 yards.

Tiz: Yeah, sorry I was a bit harsh on you. Just a build up of some of your more frustrated brethren I suppose.

I'll fade away now. It has been fun discussing things with you guys for the last month or so. I'll be happy to answer any questions you should have or respond if wanted. I'm not here to antagonize. Best of luck moving forward.

Jesse - Don't be a stranger. It's been great having you around and while some may be quite bitter at/about Tulsa, I (and I'd imagine at least a few others) have no real negativity towards them and wouldn't be bothered by the occasional update on the status of things 'round Tulsa way. We could always use a few more rational posters around here to balance some of the lunatics.

I'm not bitter in the least. They beat the living crap out of us, but that's football. It's not their fault that we gave up 63 points. You don't give up that many points unless you are either A) completely outclassed talentwise, or B) you give up. I could be wrong, but I don't think Tulsa is worlds better than us in terms of talent, so that leaves us giving up. It seriously looked like our guys just gave up completely when it was 21-0 or so.

I don't fault Tulsa for playing for records. Personally I'm not much on personal records in football, but if they had meaning to them fine. We had 11 guys out there that could've done something about it if they wanted to get worked up over it. Obviously they didn't care, so why should I?

Oops, I hope you didn't think I meant you. I only meant those people who have made it plainly obvious that they're bitter about the game.

Nope, no confusion. I was just echoing your sentiment that many BG fans are not bitter. We got whooped, it happens, let's move on.

Yep we got whooped...I'm a bit more "old school" in my thinking than most I guess. I don't see how you can put playing for individual honors above doing the right thing. It's a team game...you coach your guys to play as a unit and to sacrifice for the team. Setting aside basic sportsmanship to chase some individual stats runs counter that. In the end, I think the game and your opponent is owed more respect than that.

But..the past is past and it's time to look forward to signing day and spring balll..

Well said Flipper. Besides, it was not like the dude was chasing Hank Aaron's home run record or anything. It was for the most 300 yard games in a row, which incidentally he already held as he was tied with Ty Detmer I think at 13. Whoopee, he now holds the record by himself.

ya know...................I agree with Jesse on this one. Very simply, it is our (BG) job to stop them and their job to score. Simply put, we were HORRIBLY unprepared and under motivated to play this game. I wouldn't have cared if they scored a 100, the way we played.
On the other hand, I didn't like some other things they did either. like the confrontation down by our entrance to the field, prior to the kickoff. That was strictly BUSH, and if our team did that, I would call for the coaches resignation on the spot. Some of their trash talking long after plays etc was also over the top too, but I just look at that as a reflection on what kind of football program they run, their coaches and players.

BG71 wrote:1. Regardless of how bad the team played, this was the perfect storm as nothing went BG's way. BG receives 2 personal fouls for a questionable out of bounds hit in the first quarter and another for a late hit in the third quarter. However; on the play that Tyler was injured, he was going to be hit whether he had the ball or not. There was clearly enough time after the ball was released to pull off. No penalty called. The hit on Smith in the third quarter was clearly blatant helmet to helmet contact. No penalty called. Even the announcers mentioned this fact as they anticipated it as a highlight play. First thing this morning, I see it on the highlights.

2. How many teams or coaches with the score 56-7 late in the fourth quarter would still have their starting quarterback in? Most teams would have pulled the first team much sooner. Totally classless.
How many time did we throttle a team like that and still run our starters? Many, its about the win and they won. As for the calls they were all fine, no fault there with bad calls, it was a well called game.
the truth is the Falcons beat themselves, and got demoralized and could not bounce back. It happens while not as close as close as the loss we had to Temple...that tulsa team sucks and we lost to a crapy team, it happens....time to move on.

Uhmmmm. I can't remember once. Heck the time when it was probably warranted, against Marshall, we took a knee.

Helmet to helmet contact is a 15-yard penalty. That call was clearly missed. Tyler's injury would have been a penalty in the NFL and probably should have been here as well.

I think you got that part right, but I don't think any of us have said anything to the contrary. It just hurts worse when you perceive the victor as winning with poor sportsmanship, which I and some others most definitely feel.

Put me in the camp that says if you don't want 63 hung on you step up and make some plays. This wasn't an early season money grab on the road against a top 10 team. It was a bowl game where we were a 5 point underdog. Don't put yourself in a position to expect mercy from your opponent. There were some guys for BG out there busting their tails for 60 minutes and some well, I'm going to leave that for others to speculate. Bottom line is a team that considers itself bowl-worthy shouldn't be complaining afterwards about the opponent running up the score. Compete or stay home.

You guys are the worst losers I have ever seen. This is D1 football, not YMCA league. Calling out the Tulsa program and saying how bad the players were is also "Bush" or whatever term you use. This Tulsa team looked like a Varsity against your high school and you still call them "crappy". What does that say about your team? Remember, this team comes from a top 100 University and they had to qualify academically on largely higher level than your state funded school. So I would believe that your players are not only on the same level as football players but also as students. Face it, we were nice to you in the second half. We tried to run out the clock but your defense was so bad that we were just running over your players and they could not tackle anyone. Why don't you accept that you were beat by a more talented team and try to build up your program?

Rule #1 of AZZ.com -- Take half of what MACMAN says with a grain of salt. Then don't listen to the other half.

No one (else) says Tulsa was crappy. We got what we expected, played like ass and it showed. But some of that "running over your guys" was coming at the end of pass plays by your starting quarterback late in the game. And you're right, you could have beaten us worse...if those fly patterns you ran with said starting quarterback overthrowing receivers would have hit. I think there's where we've been rubbed the wrong way.

As was mentioned, the record is cute, and good for him if that's what matters. How many other games did he have to stay in a blowout late to get to 300? Omar Jacobs set a record an equal number of people have likely never heard of, but I think it means more.

But that's just me, and I'm a bad loser.

Or something.
