I like this quote from TOS:

"I really think a good part of our problem was that some of our players had not played at Anderson Arena before," said O'Shea. "It's a difficult place to play and the backgrounds are difficult when shooting the ball."

You know, I just don't buy this at all. It's weak. AA doesn't explain their turnovers or their ineffective offense. I really think a good part of their problem is they weren't ready and played poorly.

This quote is dumb on so many levels. Many of those guys have played there before. No other team complains about it like that. But I guess it was the background that drove Tillman crazy and forced him into his worst game!

Nope.

Dan Dakich: "The floors were too hard."

Tim O'Shea: "The background is bad"- Well, yeah- the background is all BG fans.

In all seriousness, the floor in Anderson Arena is terrible. First and foremost, yes, it’s old. But second, many new arenas and schools with older venues have installed and/or are replacing their court surfaces with a Flex-type floor. When you examine a standard basketball court below the surface on a standard floor, it’s constructed of cross over slats of wood with filler that also serves as the support and gives the floor its sturdiness. These new floors (which have been around for at least a decade now) actually flex under force with a different design. They provide cushioning when running and jumping but the ball bounces true off of it just like a standard floor. When someone is running on it or jumps on it, you can actually see it flex ever so slightly. The floor in Anderson Arena and these Flex-type floors would be equivalent to Astroturf and FieldTurf in football. Or better yet, a Nike basketball shoe of old without a cushioned insole vs. the shoes of today with Nike Air or Shox. You can play on both surfaces, but one is much better.

When I was at Virginia, they replaced their standard floor with a flex floor and it was day and night compared to the old one they replace (similar to BG’s). Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium did the exact same thing (replaced a standard floor with a flex floor). Now before anyone thinks I’m making excuses for our floor, I’m not. And yes, I remember reading something about Coach Miller saying it was fine. But believe me when I say you can tell a difference between the two.

This all reminds me of a funny story about BG’s floor. When I was an assistant with the team at BG, there were dead or flat spots all over the court and the players knew where most of them were. One place stood out to me the most. In the paint near the hoop in the south end of the arena on the side closest to the visitors’ bench, there was a dead spot that would swallow the ball. I remember Antonio Daniels walking over to it, stretching out his arm while palming the ball, dropping the ball on the spot, and the ball didn’t bounce. No kidding. The pieces of wood were actually loose and you could see them move when you tried to dribble on them. Coach Larranaga said that BG in AA was like the Boston Celtics in Boston Garden and that they knew where all the dead spots were on that old parquet floor.

+1, this wasn't Buuba Walthers first game here and he had a bad shooting day, I know he hit some key shots, but he missed a ton of shots

Bingo, this makes the point I tried to make a while back but everyone just shrugged it off. During the OU game (or maybe it was a previous one) in AA that CK looked off while walking around , he even came to the bench and was rubbing his calf or shins and looked to be in some mild pain. Now I have no clue and may never know if the floor is responsible or if he just tweaked an ankle or something but if you've noticed CK is quite a leaper and gets off the floor quite high , when he lands its got to take a tole on his legs after doing that enough times day in and day out in practice and in home games if surface underneath hardwood is plain old concrete. This new flex surface is what we should be getting. This is something that I believe DD was BS'ing about. Plus it always seems like our players are getting leg/ankle injuries at home or in practice in AA. this can't be coincidence.

Items of note in the videos....

Guys jumping really high. Guys not being injured. LARGE RAUCOUS CROWDS!!! Oh... and guys jumping really high!

Favorite moment in those clips, I think it's Kirk Cowan takes a charge and Stacey jumps on him while he's on the ground and basically cold-cocks him in congratulations. Well, no... my FAVORITE moment in those clips is when Antonio just absolutely SCHOOLS OU's Ed Sears (you can actually SEE his jock strap flying off) and flys past him for the dunk....

He jumped really high. "A leaper" one might say. Consistently. Yep.

Those were some great days Grant. I was still in HS, but I made it out to a couple games to see AD that year. Don't worry, we're going to get back there someday soon. When we do it'll be all the sweeter having sat through this downtime.

Ron Lewis practically jumped through the roof a few years back with a put back dunk against OU...I think he took off from just inside the foul line, made contact with the ball somewhere in the midle of the key and tomahawked it down.

he didn't say "Ow"....he didn't even wince IIRC....
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
