Susie's Castle

How very odd. We were just talking about that at the game Wednesday. I don't remember any other women's player having an area for fans (Like Dayon's Den) except Susie.
I actually paid attention to the game, and, except for Akron had no defense, Kate Achter sees the floor a whole lot better than Tracy Pontius.
Women's players go to their spots, Kate gets them the ball, and they shoot. Whitney Taylor would have had a lot more points if she played while Kate was playing the point.
Our team has very little one-on-one basketball, but maybe that's the way they're coached. The only player who seemed to be playing a one-on-one game was Bianca Hooten, and she isn't getting a whole lot of playing time.
Anyway, the more I watch this team, the more attached I get to them as a fan. I don't expect this team to run the table in MAC play, but I won't be surprised if they do. They have a lot of talent and if we can keep a couple of key players healthy, they will make us happy.
I guess the other thing, is that the women's players seem more approachable than the men, and certainly they're more articulate. Yeah, that has nothing to do with the topic, but it's a lot easier to identify with the women's team when you meet and talk to them.

Well...without getting into the obvious problem were heading down. I will say I have had classes with both men and women's basketball players and have found the men much more enjoyable to talk to. The men players I have spoken with have a great sense of humor and are very well spoken and articulate as are the ladies. So I don't see where your going with that. Now maybe you can't identify with some of them but I would not say they that the men are less articulate, thats painting with a pretty broad stroke.HoopsFan wrote: I guess the other thing, is that the women's players seem more approachable than the men, and certainly they're more articulate. No offense but that remark actually pissed me off a lil' bit, sure seems like there is a hidden meaning in there.

Re: Susie's Castle
I think all he was getting at is that the women's team stays on the court after the game and that gives the fans a chance to meet them and talk to them. I'm sure if the men's team did this as well he would not have said it the way he didFalcon137 wrote:Well...without getting into the obvious problem were heading down. You're prolly right, I'll apologize before this gets blown up. I thought it was going another direction. Whoops, I just remembered what I meant and why....
Back in the day when we had Fan Hospitality at the tournaments, the women's parents were always a part of the group. I guess the real reason is that the recruiting of women players is from the area and the men were from far away.
Keep in mind, this is from the day when players came from Toledo, Defiance, BG, and other towns less than 100 miles from BG and most of the men came from NY, or IL or WV or places like that. You only saw the parents on senior day
I guess I just answered my own question, and no, I didn't have any other motive for posting. It's true, the women tend to be better students, but the better student guys are just as dedicated and articulate. And it is fun to see all the players grow up by the time they get to be seniors.

Re: Player attachment the last 5 years.
When was the last time the BG men had a legitimate star come in, start as a freshman, stay all 4 years, never get in trouble, earn a ton of accolades, and leave with an impeccable record on and off the court?
Well, we just had 3 graduate from the same class on the women's side, and another who is a senior this year. Those are the types of players that small town fans will grow attached to and come out to watch.

Reimold & Pardon were both transfers, so obviously they weren't here for four years.cowboyjoe wrote:The last time? How about John Reimold, Josh Almanson, Anthony Stacey, Keith Mcleoud, Brandon Pardon, Lenny Matela. How many more do you want me to name?
McLeod was a partial qualifier and didn't play until halfway through his freshman year...he was probably our last true star.
Almanson didn't start as a freshman much less star. He really wasn't even above average until his senior year.
Lenny might qualify as the last 4 year starter and star to satisfy J4H's question. Lenny started 12 games as a freshman and played pretty well. He had 5 double doubles and contributed quite a bit as a freshman...he still wasn't a star though.
The true answer to this question is Stace. For starters I want to thank J4H for making me go look back at Stacey's career...damn he was good. He was definitely the best freshman in BG history (remember they weren't elegible before '70 or so). Won MAC Freshman of the Year award, was in the top 5 of the conference in scoring. He was in the top 10 in the country in freshman scoring.
Damn I miss those days...looking at Stace's senior year. Top 6 players were Anthony Stacey, Dave Esterkamp, Keith McLeod, Len Matela, Brandon Pardon, and Trent Jackson.
We will get back to that, I'm positive of it.

Is reading that much of a problem for you, sport?cowboyjoe wrote:The last time? How about John Reimold, Josh Almanson, Anthony Stacey, Keith Mcleoud, Brandon Pardon, Lenny Matela. How many more do you want me to name?
Stacey - graduated like, eleventy-billion years ago.
"Mcleoud" - Whoever that is. Keith McLeod graduated 6 years ago, so he came in in '98.
Reimold - Transferred here, didn't have much team success.
Almanson - For real? Decent freshman and senior years - kind of blah in the middle. Also not much team success. He gets bonuc attachment points on my totally made up "awesomeness scale", but loses points for not really being all that great for a lot of his career.
Pardon - Obviously the man - same with Matela. Again - not much team success and that was over 5 years ago.
So yeah - I'd still like you to name me one men's player in the last 5 years that had anywhere near the glory-filled career that Mann, Horne, Honegger, and Achter had/ is having.
Roll Along!
One of the funny things about Stacey's career is that it always reminds me how sick Howie Komives was. It took AS 4+ seasons to score as many points as Komives did in 3. And of course, thinking of Komives' stats reminds ya of Big Nate, which is all kinds of warm and fuzzy.

College Students follow winners at there school. Especially at mid-major DIV 1 Schools. You compare us to UConn and Tenn who consitantly compete for National titles. Well to a school like BG that is the equivalent of going to the NCAA's. This is why people follow the women. When I was in school and the mens team was exciting with Keith, Brandon Daniels ect.. I waited 2 hour to get a seat in the House that Roars. For most of us we will watch anything that wears brown and orange atleast I will. However, the towns people and casual BG sports supporter want a winner. Put one on the court and AA will roar again during mens games ( or should I say the new convo will roar).
Also I think dspollack mentioned in another post BG concentrating on different sports, so they could attract national attention to the school. The women's team at the very least has accomplished this.
