McCall to Northwestern as OC

So who takes over? Internally, Troy Rothenbuhler is the longest tenued assistant, but some of that time was spent on the defensive side of the ball. Still, he knows the system and I'd be fine with him leading the gameplanning and calling the plays.

Offensive line coach Matt Campbell supposedly called the plays at Mount Union and was the de facto offensive coordinator there before he came back to BG. He's been a GA here and knows the system well. WR coach Steve Bird was the passing game coordinator at West Virginia under Rodriguez so he knows a thing or two about the spread.

We shouldn't rule out Brandon himself taking over the playcalling duties as he did originally under Meyer.

This would be my vote. Focus on what you're best at and delegate some other responsibilities.

I would really like to see that again, myself. The guy was great at it before he got the HC gig. He wouldn't be the only HC to call his own plays.

Congrats to Mick...he did some great work here developing the QB's and in his one year as the OC. He will be missed.

I would prefer that Campbell remain the OL coach. The OL needs all the continuity it can get right now and I think if you try to have him do both the added workload of gameplanning and calling the plays would be too much of a distraction right now.

Internally, I think Coach Bird makes the most sense, but just hiring a QB coach and conferring the coordinator duties onto Brandon has its appeal also.

This could be a blessing in disguise if GB starts calling the plays now. That is assuming he uses the same mix that he did while he was our OC!

The J5 offense is not only my favorite offense to watch, but in my opinion the most difficult to defend. It spreads the field. It gets the ball in the hands of the playmakers. It finds mismatches (ie the 4th WR on a LB that can't cover his grandma). The plays feed off of each other (ie you can fake something one time, but go right back to it later). It works against both zone & man to man. It works against all out blitzing (ie NIU game). The QB has the CHOICE of whether to tuck & run himself on pretty much EVERY SINGLE PLAY. This pretty much means there are almost no "bad" plays assuming the QB can always scramble or throw the ball away. I could go on and on, but all I have to say is I'd LOVE to see us go back to this type of offense!

I'm with you on this, but it does put a heavy burden on a QB to make the right reads in the running & passing game. It also requires a QB capable of being a legitimate rushing threat.

Tyler is mobile and can get some yards when a play breaks down, but I'm not sure he's the true rushing threat that you'd need to really play that style of offense. The way we played with J5 was so effective because both he & Pope were equal threats with the ball. Every run play was an option of some sort and the defense could never know ahead of time which was going to receive the ball.

I don't think Tyler can be that QB. He can be very effective if you're only asking him to pass, however. So that begs the question of whether you stick with the '07 system and Tyler or do you bench a young starter and go forward with Glaud/Brown if trying to get to a more '03ish offense.

I'm with you in that I would MUCH, MUCH rather have the added dimension of the '03 offense. What I'm not certain of, however, is whether either of our dual threat QBs is ready to be the trigger man in that sort of system.

As one of the loudest critics for coach Brandon, I find this as WONDERFUL news. Coach Brandon absolutely excelled as the playcaller, and it only makes sense to let him have those duties back. Just because he's the head coach doesn't mean he has to delegate what was his greatest strength as a coordinator.

It sure would be nice to add Josh Harris to the coaching staff in some role to help along the quarterbacks and try to coach up the intangibles he brought to the table so well.
