Falcons fall
Looks like we got down quick and never quite clawed back in it.. just watching on gametracker, we were down 14-2 five minutes in, and it stayed around 10 the rest of the way.
Knight had 17 and three blocks, Miller 11, and Otis had 7 boards, 4 blocks but only 3 points (and only 2 fouls...maybe he's learning after all, which is mmm...mmm...good!)

A gutsy effort by BG...Kent has a better team, no doubt, but BG played hard for 40 minutes. The Falcons NEED to practice free throws. I think we were something like 5 of 18 or so. Not much better from the field.
BUT, Otis my man Polk!!!! This kid is really coming into his own. He blocked 4 or 5 shots tonight and only had 2 fouls...I think. He has improved leaps and bounds from last year.
We were down 30-20 at the half. Kent opened the game on a 12-0 run and put us in a hole from the get go. BG was able to get within 9 at 47-38 but couldn't get over the hump. We were out rebounded by a 36-29 count.
The Freaklings and I sat with Joe Jakubowski's mom in the 2nd half...that was cool.
One final note....LOVE the new road brown unis...those ROCK! This team will get better and better.
I will be at the Akron game in a week....
GO FALCONS!

Can't turn the ball over 16 times and shoot that poorly at the line or from behind the 3 and expect to win (25%)
Defense looks strong though: Kent shot around 43% i think and 11 turnovers. EIGHT BLOCKED SHOTS.
We get some scoring and take care of the ball we'll be able to hang with just about anyone. Not necessarily win every game, but be in the game at the end.
Also, for those who were there, was Knight in foul trouble for most of the game? I saw he fouled out but did get off 10 shots, which is good that means he's at least being more active..

LONG LIVE THE MONGOOSE!!
Good to see Otis put forth another solid effort and stay in the ball game. Blocks & boards from him are all I ask at this point. If he can do that while staying out of foul trouble he's a huge asset to our team. He's still only a sophomore, and post scoring moves take some time to develop. If he can stay on the court he'll get his chances to develop that part of his game. The last couple weeks have really shown some growth in OP's game.
Otherwise this game looks like more of the same (from the box score). Another solid outing from Nate Miller. Again too many turnovers, and again very poor shooting from both the line and the arc. I didn't see the game, but how were Darryl's shots? My initial reaction from the box score is we're going to lose a lot of games if we're asking Darryl Clements is shooting 12 times. Nothing against him, but Moten & Jakubowski are generally better shooters.
We really need Knight to get more aggressive offensively. He's probably our most talented offensive player, but he seems pretty tentative most of the time. I'm not worried about him, he just needs the light to click on so he can start to dominate.

Knight didn't spend his minutes playing in foul trouble. He got his fouls steadily and picked up his fourth rather late in the game.
By far, Knight's biggest development need is playing physical. He is no where near physical enough for the college level. That is what is keeping him from being one of the better players in the MAC. This will come, hopefully, with experience and weightlifting.

Jakubowski didn't seem to be his normal self. He was totally ineffective in the half court. Yes, Kent has good athletes on the perimeter, but I have to wonder if he was fighting off the flu.
Overall, we opened the game very tentative and unconfident. Kent started strong and assertive. It took us quite a while before we were willing to make things happen on offense. The game started out ugly for BG, but our defense is what kept it from staying ugly.
Part of why Clements had a high number of missed shots is that he was often the one with the ball very late in the shot clock. Plus, he took some difficult shots after making a move to beat a defender. I think we need some of that, but we really need Moten to get and make more shot attempts.
Singletary was strong and impressive in many ways. He'll be the man for Kent next year.
There was one particularly funny sequence in the game. Brandon Parks, a 6-10, 400lb slobering doofus freshmen for Kent got the ball in the low post against Otis. Parks attempted a shot that Otis promptly blocked. Seconds later, a loose ball was picked up 35 feet away and fed back in to Parks whose shot attempt was again blocked by Polk. BG ended up with the ball.

That was probably the highlight of the game for us. I would've loved to have seen that though.BleedOrange wrote:There was one particularly funny sequence in the game. How did Otis do holding his own against a guy that big? I see the kid only played 7 minutes and didn't do much in that time, but how did the matchup look? One thing I've liked about Otis is he is really strong. Leon Williams, in particular was working his tail off in that OU game and could not get the position he wanted. I'd think Otis would have a pretty good quickness advantage on Parks, but did he stack up strength wise as well?
I really think if Otis continues to be able to stay on the court for 25-30 minutes he's going to develop a post scoring game. If he does, look out.

I'm 30 minutes from Kent and 15 minutes from AU, so I never miss those BG games.hammb wrote:Were you at the game Bleed?BleedOrange wrote:Jakubowski didn't seem to be his normal self. Brandon Parks is big, big, big, but he carries a lot of fat. He was considerably bigger than Otis, but didn't shove him around. Parks is a project and will probably need to drop 75 pounds before being effective. Not a good indicator. The Leon Williams matchup was much more telling.
Just as I was ready to give up on him, Otis Polk has stayed out of foul trouble against 3 good oponents in a row. When he's in, he gives us a defensive and rebounding presense we haven't had in literally decades. This is particularly important this year, as Larson was killing us early with his bad hands and slow responses.
