Game Thread: #25 Bowling Green vs. Western Michigan
The fight was obviously planned. Its like as soon as that fourth goal went in WMU all got together and said "at the 15 second mark we drop em and start swinging." I swear three of their guys started in at the exact same time. I couldn't believe we had all five players removed. Especially when half the time all we were doing was pulling those dirt bags off of our own teammates.
If the fight really was about the guy's wrist, why not retaliate at a reasonable time, instead of the last 15 seconds of the game? It seems like there is a problem every time we play the Broncos.

I don't know if this fight was planned at that particular moment because generally when one starts fighting, it "allows" everyone to go at it until the refs make them stop. Even though we helped to pull everyone off of each other, everyone had a swing or two.
The end of the game is more of a reasonable time than say in the second. You don't want to get tossed early because you could still have a chance to come back and win. I do understand what you mean though, instead of 15 seconds maybe like several minutes left.
I think we should have called the game or something because the amount of time it took to eject and discuss the matter took 15 minutes for 15 seconds of gametime.
But even 30 seconds before the fight, it was still a one goal game. I'm just going on what I heard through chatroom updates and read on gametracker, but once it got to 4-1 is when WMU decided to goon it up. And unless there was an injury, or pink ooze coming out of the ice, I don't think you'll see a game get called short. Too many ridiculous things can happen. You'd be surprised what the record for "3 goals in shortest time span" is.Kaleena08 wrote:I do understand what you mean though, instead of 15 seconds maybe like several minutes left.

This fight was without a doubt a sour grapes situation. They were not just doing it to protect their player (which is understandable in my opinion) but the only reason this took place was because they were down by a lot, with nothing to lose at the end of the game so they decided to try and slug it out. When you have a hockey team that is 6-16 (now 17) and they are out of the game, you get some frustrated players. To say they were doing it to get back at Geelan for hurting their player in the second period would be the equivalent of a baseball player getting hit by a pitch in the 4th, then having his pitcher retaliate in the bottom of the 9th.... what is the point?
If nothing else this will piss of the Falcons, the better hockey team, and give them momentum going on the road to try and complete the sweep!
edit: does anyone have a link to the fight by chance?

I saw the slash on the player who supposedly had the wrist injury. it was a token tap behind the play. I saw it and although it was stupid, it would have been a cheap penalty to be called. I was just hoping that at that point in the game, (the slash happened at about 4:50 in the 3rd) we won't start taking stupid penalties.
As for the fight, CLEARLY it was number 5 - Collins who started it. Then all **** broke out with Frank going nuts. I haven't seen the updated penalties, but if we loose more than 2 guys for tonight, there is definately something wrong - they should loose at least 3 for several games.

The correct thing for the CCHA is to suspend all 10 players on the ice. As for ending the game. I went to a Sioux vs Gopher game several years ago that had a massive brawl with about 10 ticks left. They called the game. This should have been no different, the refs had no control of the game period.

they basically called the game. the puck dropped, WMU didn't even make an attempt to win it and we took it behind our own net.

Kai got three extra games for a hit during normal play. These comments clearly show planned intent to injure. Anything less than 7 extra games will show exactly how poor the CCHA administration is.bgbill wrote:"With a pack of reporters bearing down on him, Jim Culhane sighed, pursed his lips and then shook his head.
Scott Paluch, Bowling Green's hockey coach, had no comment.
But Chris Frank, one of Western Michigan's captains and enforcers, had plenty to say about what happened near the end of his team's 4-1 loss to the Falcons on Friday night at BGSU Ice Arena.
In fact, Frank could hardly wait to explain why he and his teammates touched off a melee with 12 seconds left, an all-out line brawl that littered the ice with gloves and sticks, nearly involved the goaltenders and sent 10 players off the ice with fighting majors and game misconducts.
"It was frustration, but it was also because No. 22 (BG's Ben Geelan) slashed (Patrick) Galivan right in the wrist and hurt him pretty bad," Frank said. "He's had problems with that wrist and it was pretty bad, so we wanted to let them know that we weren't going to stand for that."

The fight was really crazy. I don't have a link to it and I hope someone does, but I happened to be behind the glass in the student section, which was directly across from everything going on, so I have almost frame by frame pictures of it that I should have up sometime if anyone wants to see them. And I watched Collins go straight for Geelan after that fourth goal, taking him by the neck hole of his jersey and pulling him backward into a few punches. It was crazy and I got a picture of the blood in the ice too (kind of gross, I know).aaronBG10 wrote:

Anyway, it was a crazy game, but I'm so glad Whittie got the hat trick. Oh, and I suppose I'll raise my hand like Terry because I picked Whitmore to score first too!!
