I actually just went to a curling event that was sponsored jointly by the Curling Club and the Honors Student Association. That night, there were about 15 members of the curling club there, and they basically told us that the club is about twice the size on most meeting days. It was a really fun event, I had a pretty hard time balancing while trying to throw the stone, and its really easy to overshoot the "house" or target. All things considered I'd say the curling club is doing pretty well, at least from a numbers standpoint, I don't know how good they are on a relative basis.MACMAN wrote:LOL I would never spank a gift horse in the mouth...the city on the other hand has and will continue to long after I m in the ground...just suprised they did not on this one.hammb wrote:That was not the city's call. shoot if the city were thinking the roller hockey rink would have been designed to create a nice outdoor rink in the winter for this purpose.
That roller rink was put in by some company that goes around putting them in. Some woman from out west, gave the city like $18k and said, put in one of these roller rink things. I'm not sure if she was originally from BG or what, but her husband had died and she was spending her inheritance, I believe. Anyways, she told them exactly how to spend that money and it involved this company that builds those things.
There were 3 people from the company that came out. They had the concrete work done professionally, then those 3 guys and a group of us from the city did all the rest of the labor.
Basically the City was given the cash and told how to spend it. They weren't given a choice to make it able to be flooded for winter play or anything like that. They were offered a gift and just said thanks. If you think they should've had it be capable of ice hockey I suggest you find out who that donor was and call her up and tell her next time she donates we want ice & roller hockey.
As for the curling ice...the ceiling is way to low for mcuh of anything besdies curling and besides BG has very rich curling tradition. i dont know the status of the club now but it used be strong.
and yes your right about the steel buildings all though I have seen prefabs used as well.

I feel a bit foolish chiming in here without really knowing anything about hockey and what not or the history of the program but here goes. Funding: Couldnt naming a building Scott Hamilton ice arena or Rob Blake or any of the other pro guys help raise money and exposure for the program. And if we are looking for just more ice couldnt this be done pretty simply. A Building: I am from fremont and worked out often in the building where that ice arena is, it seems like a complicated intelligent design but there isnt anything too it that seems like it is not fully functional or that it would cost too much.FalconTurf wrote:[ 1 in Fremont and an apparent need for more ice in BG. Seems hockey is taking hold in NW Ohio.
Any ideas. I always push for this tie to former alums and etc. and wonder why it is not done more. The Blake-Hamilton arena sounds pretty amazing. Simply having their name on the building might help raise funds.

I don't know why Blake or Hamilton would want their names posted or why we'd want them. Neither of the two graduated from BGSU. I do think that an actual name is needed I mean come on Ice Arena is the weakest name in the history of hockey. We can wait for Jerry York to croke and name it the York Arena.

Ugh...This topic is giving me madness.
At least something is being done to help the ice arena, period. Everyone is going to want more ice, less ice, better dressing rooms, more ice for the youth leagues, less ice for the community, etc. etc. All I will say is Miami and Ohio State found rapid success the years after they introduced new facilities. Miami is still the #2 team in the country and Ohio State is rebuilding, but was a top 10 team for some time. No plan is perfect, and it is clear that the Athletic Department does not have the fund-raising capacity to get alumni dollars the way that Miami did. As a former player, I want the biggest and best rink available to continue to help the current staff and recruiting power. However, with limited funds, a "band-aid" approach is better than no improvements at all.

I agree, especially since Jerry has battled through (and beat) prostrate cancer, I believe. I have always thought the arena should be named after Sam Cooper, without whom, we wouldn't have an ice arena or Falcon Hockey at BG.hutchirish wrote:We can wait for Jerry York to croke and name it the York Arena.

Pretty low class comment. I played for Jerry and am still friends with his son and daughter. I don't know if you were trying to be funny, but it wasn't.
And I'm with you hutch, I'm very happy they are putting money into the ice arena repairs and updates. Considering in the very recent past, there were some unsubstantiated rumors that hockey might be dropped at BG (losing records, losing revenue by the hundreds of thousands), this assures us that BG Hockey is here to stay!!

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I wonder if the University would ever consider giving up the naming rights to the ice arena? Could be an additional revenue stream.Falcon Fanatic wrote:I agree, especially since Jerry has battled through (and beat) prostrate cancer, I believe. On the topic of Cooper, isn't the pool at the rec center named after him, or is that a different Cooper?

get the sand out of your vagina. I meant that the guys in his 60's in the next 30 years he will die that is life. I am just simply stating that we can wait 30 years till we name the rink after him.

About the naming rights, I'd say yes, although I don't know if they'd do it with a corporate client, or just if a big donor stepped up, like Mr. Sebo did.hutchirish wrote:I wonder if the University would ever consider giving up the naming rights to the ice arena? As for the other, yeah, it's the same Cooper. Sam Cooper.
And from your name and location, I think we may have met a few weeks back when you stumbled on the alumni happy hour at Champps. (I was the guy that's roughly 40 years younger than anyone else at the table.

Why would they need to graduate in order to name something after them? Several posts here said that the facility would be used by the community and youth leagues so we should try to get the city govt as well as private individuals involved. Scott Hamilton and Rob Blake would be the definition of 2 private individuals who were positively effected by the BG ice rink and the BG community. It seems foolish to narrow our potential to people who graduated from BG.PegCityFalcon wrote:I don't know why Blake or Hamilton would want their names posted or why we'd want them. Much as i like York, as much as he did for BG...he is now an Eagle bro and this is a Falcons nest. to that end much as like Mason his poop smells like it came from to far north....PegCityFalcon wrote:get the sand out of your vagina. Why not Paulch Arena...if he keeps doing well and rebuilds the program and gets a life time contract....it could all happen in 30 years too.
Might as well go for real money and call it RBK arena. or Itech
or marathon arena.
Naming buildings and so on after living people can be tricky...... they don't always live up to their reputation. President Shriver (retired) of Miami discusses this matter at some length in his lectures about Miami History. So we need to be careful........ particularly of the man-love that MACMAN has for Paluch.
Personally I love Steve Cady Arena at the Goggin. I thought it was might fine that Miami named their house after one of our graduates. Of course - the reality is Coach Cady started the Varsity program at Miami, stayed on in the AD after his coaching days, and help build the program to what it is today. Naming the arena after Cady is in respect to his nearly 30 years of dedicated service to Miami.
That being said...... I can't support naming our Ice Complex or one of the houses after any of the former coaches/players. Other than coaching for a few years and playing for a season or two....... what have they done for BGSU hockey and athletics. Think about it..........
As much as I don't like our record under Buddy Powers and the resulting devastation of the program after those losing years..... Buddy has been with the U for many years - dedicated much of his career to BGSU..... (Cady didn't set the coaching world on fire). He has done good things after coaching and in youth hockey (if others are correct about his career in the larger arena of the US/World Teams). He has accomplished the last renovation of the team areas. So...... someone like Buddy would be more suited for naming the Arena. Even some jacka$$ like me can't find fault in Buddy's dedication to our institution....... Thank you Buddy. I appreciate the hard work you have done.
Or if one of these alumni players stepped up and ponied up the cash it takes to make a project like this go.........
Concerning a second sheet of ice....... this can be fairly small in the overall scheme of things. Goggin's second sheet is full size, but in a tight space. There is seating on one side for maybe 500. Classes, open skate, broomball, intramurals and so on take place on this sheet on a daily basis. Remember - the college hockey season is 26 weeks long - the second sheet can reiieve some tension for space on the primary sheet.
Another thought- were does the team play during construction/renovation of the Arena. To do it right..... we need to move out of the building.

Bill - I have not idea who these folks are .... because compared to you I'm a causal fan. If you think they are desiring - then I am totally behind you. They must meet the criteria I laid out about a long and sustained support for the program and the university.bgbill wrote:Helen and Bill Lloyd Arena
I wasn't advocating Buddy - but using him and Cady as examples of what it really takes to have a building named after you..... other than deep pockets.
Can you tell us more about them?
