Alas my glass of Oak Barrel Aged Arrogant Bastard is now completely empty
My glass on BG hoops though? Hell no. I don't care what anyone says, from this point forward this season is already a success. We have wins against Cincinnati, Miami, and OU. I didn't honestly think we'd beat any of those teams. I know two of them were at home, but so what, we still played the games.
We have a Freshman PG who has shown flashes of a good shooting stroke, and quickness that we haven't seen from the guard spot in quite awhile. Sure he's inconsistent, he's a freshman.
Our sophomore big man has been staying out of foul trouble, and contributing as often as not...that's a good step.
Our freshman forward has shown good rebounding skills and the physical talent to score out of the post when he has the aggression.
Our Junior has been a steady rebounder & scorer.
Our coaching staff has put a system out there that has the potential to be very fun to watch. We allow our talented players to drive the lanes now. We try to push the ball down court on the break when it's there. We play generally good defense, showing the willingness to switch seamlessly from zone to man back to zone.
Is this team going to win it all? Probably not. Are they the most talented team in the conference? Far from it. Still, what this team has done has already exceeded my expectations and I completely enjoy going to the games again. The past couple years the games weren't really fun...I went, because I was a dedicated fan, not because I really wanted to. Now I find myself actually looking forward to the games to watch the continued development of this group. I think the foundation for something great is being laid this year. Once we get a few more bricks, I think we're going to have something here.

I am clearly excited about this teams upside! Coach Orr has the guys believing in his system, playing together and finding ways to win. Success will breed confidence. A confident team will give the better teams, like Akron and Kent a real fight. I wouldn't worry too much about Akron, they just lost to Central. One win that people aren't talking about too much is the win against Miami. Miami, at points, has been an amazing team this season. Other nights, they look very mortal, but we beat them and that's what counts. That was a nice win! The sky's the limit for these guys. None of us, who is in their right mind, would have predicted having any success this season, let alone to be playing this well, w/o two projected starters!

Don't you mean a few less bricks?![]()
Testament to good coaching: at UA, the free throw shooting was atrocious. Yesterday, it seemed like we could count on both points
I am not surprised at the women’s team this year at all. They are playing about how I thought they would be. They are certainly not what they’ve been over the past few years, but they are still one of the MAC’s better teams and are having a solid season. As for the men’s team, right here and now, no way did I expect them to be 4-2 in the MAC with wins over Ohio and Miami. After not having Marschall’s services, then losing Hamblet, coupled with the ups and downs during the non-conference season, I did not expect to see us where we are right now. That said, we are going to need to get some wins against the MAC West because the last third of the MAC schedule (our flip side of the MAC East slate) is going to be very difficult. “Right now,” Coach Orr is MAC Coach of the Year, IMO. But there’s a lot of basketball yet to be played.
GO BG!!!

I usually ignore you, FB, however, I feel the need to correct your behavior. In the future, please read my words and don't read into my words.Falconboy wrote:I have to agree with 24 a bit on this one too. Yes, we're all excited to ber 4-2 at this juncture but it surely don't mean we are among the elites and we don't have to be for this season to be a general success given whats happened over the past few years. Nobody's looking at things half-empty just realizing that that 3 wins over mediocre Mac teams doesn't mean we have become All-World now. My thinking is , everything is gravy at this point . Each victory whether over a mediocre NIU or Fluffalo team is just something to give us the fuzzies every now and then to hold us until next year.Rightupinthere wrote:I'm not sure we're reading the same thread. First of all, we've played 4 home games to only 2 on the road. That's helped to inflate our record. Secondly, the two toughest teams in the conference, Akron and Kent, we ended up playing on the road. The teams we've beaten at home haven't been as good with the exception of Ohio, which was a GREAT win. You should be able to beat bad teams at home and lose to good ones on the road. Now don't get me wrong, its a great thing that our team has risen to this level in such a short time. Last year we couldn't beat bad teams at home. But doing that doesn't necessarily mean you're in for a great year.Warthog wrote:How about this for astonishing: If the MAC tourney started today, we would get a first round bye!![]()
We currently would have the fourth seed by means of our win over Ohio. That, my friends, is simply unbelievable.
When the schedule turns around, and we start playing the good teams at home and the bad teams on the road, then we'll see how good we truly are. Are we good enough at home to beat Akron? Are we bad enough on the road to lose to Buffalo? At this point in time, my answers to those questions are probably not, and probably yes respectively. That's a problem because those are the big questions that will decide how the rest of the season goes.
If there is a point to be made, we need to start winning some games on the road too, because we're going to be up against some tough teams at AA later on this year, especially when Akron and Kent come calling.
Your explaining the reasoning for the glass to be half empty.
No one has ever said that this team is All World. No one even stated that they are the elite in the MAC. I don't thing anyone has even HINTED at making a run at MAC tourney. Please cite for me these words if you disagree. Same goes for 24.
People are just enjoying the season and THAT is what this thread is about. But for some people, it's just another opportunity to shout out "OH WE'RE DOOMED!"

9-9, 4-2 MAC. I don't care how we've won the games we have but for crying out loud enjoy the building process! Nobody picked this team to win the MAC this year...and that wasn't the main goal.
This is the same thing on the football board. There are few folks over there that don't see the positive...only the negative. When things are going well or better than expected, some still look for anything negative and personally, I'm sick of it. Lighten up, Francis.

I'm not shouting doom thats for sure, if it sounds like that in my posts well....thats your problem. I'm just hoping nobody gets feverishly excited and then gets a huge let down when we don't win the Mac Championship cuz we won a few Mac games. My expectations are still quite tempered at this point but I do enjoy the games now a bit more than I was seeing the slow but seemingly steady upward progress were taking under Coach Orr. Its definitely not like last year where I just felt all was lost and there was no hope under DD.Rightupinthere wrote:I usually ignore you, FB, however, I feel the need to correct your behavior.
