GB getting a contract extension
GB getting a contract extension
I didn't see anything on here, but Gregg Brandon is getting a multi-year extension (just announced by Joe Shad on ESPN2). No word on length or money involved, but just thought I would bring it up.

I'd say that Hammb won the first debate. Then again, that took place before the GMAC Bowl.Falconboy wrote:Cue a Hammb/Globetrotter heated debate in 5..4..3..2..1 8)bgbball31 wrote:I didn't see anything on here, but Gregg Brandon is getting a multi-year extension (just announced by Joe Shad on ESPN2). IMO, Brandon still deserves the extension though.

Hammb, you like falconboy more. (Remember that Simpsons when Bart and Lisa were having a fight over who loved Homer more?)Falconboy wrote:Cue a Hammb/Globetrotter heated debate in 5..4..3..2..1 8)bgbball31 wrote:I didn't see anything on here, but Gregg Brandon is getting a multi-year extension (just announced by Joe Shad on ESPN2). PS I still think it is a bad idea but I am more moderate now after talking to an insider I trust he seems to have a very strong relationship with his players. Multi-Year scares me. But if there is a buyout clause, and we indeed do have enough money for a buyout then it is not a huge deal.
I feel like we are settling a little bit tho. I don't see much excitement coming from this announcement. I still feel like, especially following the bowl game debacle, this years accolades are a bit hollow.

What exactly did they accomplish? What was the record of teams they beat?Falconfreak90 wrote:Coach B deserves the extension. Yeah the GMAC Bowl sucked BiG time but that doesn't erase what the team accomplished during the regular season. Especially with the expectations around here going into the season.

Amen Freak. The man is a proven, consistent winner, plain and simple. It's kind of funny that the dwindiling few who still harp on the bowl game never even gave him credit for the bowl games he won.Falconfreak90 wrote:Coach B deserves the extension. The national media recognizes what an asset he is every time they toss his name around for job openings, and now we have him officially in place to be a Falcon for years and build on the success we've had. Think he could recruit before? Let's see what happens with the Sebo Center in place. It's only going to get better...

I think it was the right move at this point in time. I'm interested to see the details of the contract as far as pay, buyout clauses, length, etc. Those details will determine exactly how I feel about the extension. 2 years with a pay increase and a low buyout number is a whole different ballpark than 5 years at triple the salary with a large buyout clause.
I hope Brandon continues to improve as a coach and can take us to the next level...a MAC championship THIS YEAR.

Did you sleep thru the season? We were a pretty young team that was picked to finish FIFTH in the MAC East by the MAC Media, went 8-4 and tied for the East title. We kicked UT's ass all over the field and went 1-1 vs the Big 11. We played SEVEN road games and only 5 at home. We had a new starting QB who did pretty well thru the season. As far as the teams we beat...we played who was on our schedule so don't be hating on the kids for something they can't control.Globetrotter wrote:What exactly did they accomplish? WTF did you expect? Nobody on this site predicted BG would go better than 8-4 and a lot of folks thought the Falcons would go under .500 again.
You think you can do better? It cracks me up how people on this site think they can run this program better than a man who's been in the business 25+ years.
I guess there are some folks that will never give the man credit and that's too bad. Why not go get Moe Ankney out of retirement? Trust me it could be a whole lot worse than 4 winning seasons in 5 years and 3 bowl bids.
I do expect to see BG in the MAC Title game this fall....

I just wonder why it took so long.
Look, there were slightly annoying patches this season; but nothing compared to what I originally expected. He's not Pete Carroll, but we aren't USC either...Well not yet.
Expectations will be incredibly high this season; I see no reason why we all shouldn't be very excited.

That is a good question. The only better question would be, whould will do a better job than Coach Brandon for the money that Coach Brandon has been making? Some people around here are dealing with fantasy, not reality.tiznow wrote:He has been successful, so why trash him. Who will do better than Coach brandon?

Extension (if true as reported) has more to do with timing than performance. No school wants to have a coach in limbo with only a year left on his contract. BG had three options on Brandon right now: (1) do nothing and left the contract run out and then resign him if 2008 goes well; (2) fire him immediately due to 2006 season debacle, 2008 GMAC Bowl performance and general program decline/treading water over the last several years; (3) give him an extension and be cautious on terms, length and buyout in case your fears that 2006 season and recent GMAC Bowl are real indicators of his ability to lead this program.
As I said, option one is not really the way schools like to do things…it sends bad messages all around to leave coaching waving in the wind. Option two not realistic since it would be a black eye to cut him loose after 8-4 season and trip to bowl game…no matter how bad the results. Option three looks to be the one Christopher is taking. It will be interesting to hear the terms of the deal.
In my mind, Brandon did just enough this year to keep his job. I don’t see this as a real vote of confidence for him. IMO, I’d much rather see us get a coach that had his team ready to play each week…not just occasionally or most of the time.
