There are three things you can't coach...

1) Height
2) Speed
3) Heart

If these are tall skinny DB's that can fly, he may want them to bulk up to 210-225lbs to have fast LBs than what you have now.

When we're talking about the BG defense, there are waaaaaaaay more than 3 things we can't coach.

I agree with most of Warthog's statement as well. It bugs me that the coaching staff tries to take our smallest players and make them gain enough weight to play the LB position. I personally think its rather unhealthy for a small slender framed DB/CB type player at say 170-180lbs and try and make him bulk up to 230-240 to play LB. Not a big deal for the DE and OL sized guys who have large frames and already may weigh around 250-260 and bulking them up to the 290+ range.

All I know is what I see on the field from our defense and at most times it is physically dominated and I'm frankly sick and tired of seeing it.

I actually agree with falconboy. As to the earlier post - LB has not been a stong position for us in years. Second, we are undersized. Dozier is NOT an inside guy- he should be plaing outside. More effective for his height and speed. We were pathetic at getting off blocks inside this year at the inside LB position. Briggs is more of a LB than anthing we have - don't get not plaing him outside at all unless he is pathetically slow- but I just did not see that. he was handled easily on the run in many cases. Just did not have the size this year. Pursued well but that is it. It will be another long year without some increse is size inside.

Interesting thing in the PD last week...re: a St. Ignatius LINEBACKER verballing, then signing WITH IOWA! Basically, the kid said that Ferentz told him that he would probably be moved to DE...said he LIKED to move HS LB's to DE, and many times DE's to DT's...so, perhaps, our coaches aren't that far off when changes get made. (I'm not saying we should use 180lb. LB's, but some kids DO fill out and mature to the 215 range or so).

Hell some kids go to college at 165lbs and leave at 230lbs.

That is I'm guessing extremely rare and again don't think thats particularly healthy for guys with that slim a frame to gain that much weight.

Jeez..you guys are acting they're force feeding 160lb kids to turn them into Derrick Markray. We're talking about kids that come into the program around 180- 200lbs and maybe go up to 210- 220 to play LB.

Get a grip...

You're telling me. But then again I wasn't talking about any particular players. Just someone I know a little bit more personally.

Christ, some of you people are daft

200lbs to 220-230lbs is no big deal. I'm talking about these thin db sized guys at 170 or so and trying to bulk them up to linebackers sized. I think its rather dumb and healthy to take slender db's and make them try and gain 50lbs+ to play linebacker.
