BGSU Extends Gregg Brandon's Contract Through 2011

Brandon is 38-24 (27-13 in MAC games) in five seasons at the helm of the Falcon football program.

Feb. 8, 2008

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -

Bowling Green State University Director of Athletics Greg Christopher announced today that head football coach Gregg Brandon has received a contract extension that will run through the 2011 season.

"Gregg's record is impressive - 27 MAC wins in five years, along with three bowl games, three BCS wins and three divisional titles or co-titles," said Christopher. "Gregg helped build the program and now he has sustained it. We're excited about the future of BGSU football - everything is in place for success: a great group of young men, a first-rate coaching staff, top-notch facilities and tremendous fan support."

Brandon led the Falcons to an 8-5 season, a Mid-American Conference East Division co-Championship and a GMAC Bowl appearance this season. The eight wins were tied for conference honors, while the .615 winning percentage was tops in the conference for 2007. The eight wins were also the most wins since the 2004 team went 9-4.

This past season, despite being picked to finish fifth in the preseason MAC East poll, combined with the addition of five new coaches, the Falcons opened the season with a bang, upsetting Minnesota on the road 32-31 in overtime. It was Brandon's third career win versus the Big Ten.

BGSU roared out to a 3-1 start with wins over Minnesota, Temple and Western Kentucky, before dropping three of their next four contests to fall to 4-4 overall. Brandon and the Falcons finished the regular season with four straight wins (Akron, Eastern Michigan, Buffalo and Toledo), outscoring their opponents 151-79 and earning a bid to the 2008 GMAC Bowl, the Falcons third Bowl appearance in five years under Brandon (2003-Motor City and 2004-GMAC).

In addition, under Brandon the Falcons had eight players earn All-MAC status, seven MAC Player of the Week honors and senior center Kory Lichtensteiger was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the country's top center.

"I am very appreciative to Greg Christopher for the extension," said Brandon. "It demonstrates a commitment not only to me, but the continued long term success of Bowling Green Football. I definitely believe it is a privilege to be the head coach of the Falcons."

Under Brandon the Falcons are 38-24 overall (.613) and 27-13 (.675) in conference action in five years at the helm of the football program. His 38 overall and 27 MAC wins and .613 win percentage are second-most among active Mid-American Conference coaches. That same win percentage is 15th all-time in the MAC record books, while his 27 conference wins are tied for 19th.

In 2006, BGSU finished first in the MAC in rushing averaging 176.6 yards per game on the ground.

In 2005, BGSU shared the MAC East title and went unbeaten on the road in league play (4-0), including a 42-14 nationally televised win over arch-rival Miami. The Falcons were the top program in the MAC in punt returns (12.97) and finished second in passing (388.8), scoring (35.8) and net punting (35.1) and third in total offense (447.8), pass efficiency (142.4) and turnover margin (.73). The Falcons were ranked 16th in the country in punt returns, 17th in passing, 18th in scoring, 20th in turnover margin, and 21st in pass efficiency.

In 2004, Brandon guided the Falcons to a national ranking in each major poll for the second straight year as they finished 9-3. The Falcons also boasted the most potent offense in MAC history finishing second in the country at 506.3 yards per game and fourth nationally in scoring offense at 44.3 points per game. Both established new league records. In addition, the Falcons finished third in the country in passing (338.3) and turnover margin (+1.25) and fourth in pass efficiency (165.5). In addition, he saw sophomore quarterback Omar Jacobs earn All-American honors and blossom into the national leader in TD passes with 41 and set an NCAA record for touchdown to interception ratio with just four picks all season. For his efforts he was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year.

In 2003, Brandon guided BGSU to a #23 national ranking in the final AP and Coaches Poll (23rd) and a #24 position in the final BCS standings. Last year, he had the top record of any first-time, first-year head coach that season with an 11-3 mark after guiding the Falcons to a MAC West title (7-1) and a win over Northwestern in the Motor City Bowl. In addition, he saw BGSU ranked for a school record eight weeks and make five national television appearances. Also, BGSU finished third in the country in total offense (496.7), ninth in passing offense (300.4), 14th in passing efficiency (147.29), and 20th in scoring (33.6). Defensively, the Falcons were the third highest rated team in the MAC. Senior quarterback Josh Harris and senior cornerback Janssen Patton also earned All-American honors for their stellar individual performances.

After serving as the offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer for two years Brandon became the 16th head coach in the history of the Falcon football program on Dec. 19, 2002.

Brandon Coaching Record
Year Overall MAC
2007 8-5 6-2
2006 4-8 3-5
2005 6-5 5-3
2004 9-3 6-2
2003 11-3 7-1
Overall 38-24 27-13[/quote

How substantial is the raise and what is his buyout?

Heres to hoping the positives he brings to the table over weigh his negatives.

The better response would have been..."What are you complaining about, it looked like you posted something worth reading for once..."

Meyer had less talent to work with coming in after Blackney's wake than Brandon did replacing Meyer. Fact! Remember where this program was in 2000 when Urban took over (1995 5-6; 1996 4-7; 1997 3-8; 1998 5-6; 1999 5-6; 2000 2-9). Also remember where this program was when Brandon took over (2002 9-3 and totally new atmosphere in the program). Brandon had his two best season (2003 11-3; 2004 9-3) after replacing Meyer...wow! Imagine that!

Those first couple of seasons didn't tell me what kind of coach Brandon was. All it told me was he has smart enough not to screw up the momentum Urban had going. The last three season has told me more about Brandon as the leader of this program. And those results can only be described as mixed at best. Lets see where this program is four years from now (2011) when the new extention is due to run out.

Well, now that the 3 year extension has been announced, let's all just get behind the Falcons and watch them win the MAC title this fall. I know there are differences of opinions here and that's fine. Otherwise, it would be the OSU board. I respect the opinions of hammb, Warthog and everyone else. We all want BG to be the premier program in the MAC and one of the best mid majors out there. Coach B and staff have their work to do...and I remain 110% behind them.

All the pieces are in place....GO FALCONS!!!!!!

Bingo. Bowling Green will NEVER fire a coach without a hell of a lot more financial backing.

Agree. I hope no one mistakes good, healthy discussion of our coaches, players and program as anything but support for our beloved brown and orange.

Roll along!

I'll tell you what...go find any one of the 9,000 Gregg Brandon threads on this board and you'll find paragraph after paragraph from me on this subject. Frankly...I don't want to rehash this nonsense any longer because FACT: Brandon is going to be here awhile. I'm very happy to hear that, you aren't. Life goes on......
