I talk to some people about the team and they're like, "oh, well they suck." When I was forced to correct them, they're invariably either shocked or not impressed anyways.
To be fair, I'm not exactly sure you're the best person to be lecturing people on the perils of pessimism.
Either way, people better show up for these games.
Well since you've made this personal, let's have at it. The one thing that pisses me off most about a lot of our students is that from the moment they step onto campus, they assume that we suck at everything sports-related because we're not Ohio State or Michigan. It takes a lot of effort to get people to drop that notion. I on the other hand, did not come to BG with this preconceived notion, and quite frankly, I've been one of the louder supporters of the team this season. Two other posters on here can attest that prior to this season I wasn't big on men's basketball, mostly because Dan Dakich was a moron that butchered BG basketball for the first two years I was here. (and a few years prior to that) Yes I admit that I was fair-weathered. Hell, the first BG game I ever went to was against Northern Illinois in 2005-06. We blew a 19-point lead with 13 minutes left and lost. That game told me all I needed to know about Dan Dakich. But I digress. Even in its worst form, fair-weatherness is eons better than not giving the team a chance at all, which many of our students seem to be doing. Now that's not to say that we don't have students that scream and stand on the floor for games supporting the guys. But when we have nights like last Wednesday when most of the student section is empty and we have less than 1000 in total attendance for a team that is over .500 in conference play, that is embarrassing. Surely not everybody has night classes on Wednesday.
The other thing that raised a few eyebrows for me was how many of you didn't think we would beat 3-15 Ball State in Muncie a few weeks ago. Pfft, Please! Dan Dakich isn't the coach anymore. Louis Orr will beat 3-15 90%+ of the time. The defensive effort we have is comparable to the top teams in the MAC. His coaching (and recruiting with JJ) have brought us back. I just hope people realize it and bring big crowds for Akron and Kent.
By the way Peregrinner - congrats on your "beheading"!
I agree with most of what you're saying, and I'm with you in hoping people come out to support this team for our final 2 home games. This team has been playing some damn good basketball at home, and they deserve more support than what they've gotten.
I'm right there with you in regards to the past couple years. In fact, had I graduated in '07 with only the previous 4 years to go on I probably would not be as big a fan as I am now. I was at almost every game for the past few seasons, and quite frankly I didn't enjoy myself very often. The basketball was boring, we weren't competitive, and even if we won it usually felt as though it was because the other team sucked so bad. This year is different and I'm genuinely enjoying the games again...it's a great feeling.
In regards to the BSU game, it's not that I expected us to lose (I expected us to win). It's more that I still think it was a good victory simply because road wins are tough in this conference no matter who they're against, BSU included. Look no further than UT for evidence of that. They're 0fer the road, and only lost 1 game at home all year. You haven't been around for as long as some of us, but I still distinctly remember road losses to mediocre Akron & UT teams costing us a chance at the NCAAs in '02. We beat those teams by a combined 49 points in their trips to Anderson, and lost to both in their gyms. That cost us a shot at the tourney that year, plain & simple. So yeah, despite how awful BSU has been, I'm not willing to downplay those wins. MAC road games are a bitch.
