Calling All Fans

Post by falconmama2007 »

 I would still like to see more involvement with the fans. Though we have come a long way we still have a long way to go.

I went at it last year with the President of the fan club at Akron and we kind of have this love/hate relationship. So we talk a lot of smack to each other all in fun that is. :-D

So here is the deal: He revealed to me at the last Akron game that he was assembling 1000 Zip fans to come to the Akron/Bowling Green game and they were going to own our house. Now I don’t know if he was exaggerating or what, but I want to be prepared. I want to know what we are going to do about this. He said that he was being extra nice to me because he had no reason to get as verbal as last year being that they beat us so bad.

So who is our fan club leader and can he/she assemble and organize a fun, loud, group of fans that won't allow them to take over our house?

I agree...it's time that this team received a reward for their hardwork. It's time for an orange-out against Akron!!!!

I agree. The fans of Bowling Green have really not supported this team at all. I've been to all but one game in conference play thus far (the Ohio game was while I was in Mobile for the GMAC Bowl) and there wasn't one game of decent attendance all year until yesterday. Even yesterday I was dissapointed in the turnout, it was not any bigger than a couple of the ladies' games this season (Notre Dame and Ohio especially).

It's about damn time our students, faculty, and townsfolk wake up and realize that our team is 6-4 in conference and in contention for a 1ST ROUND BYE in the MAC! I swear even this late into the season, the negativity in the student base is just astounding. I talk to some people about the team and they're like, "oh, well they suck." When I was forced to correct them, they're invariably either shocked or not impressed anyways. We've only got two home games left, and they are both big ones, against Akron and Kent State. They're going to need all the fan backing they can get!

To be fair, I'm not exactly sure you're the best person to be lecturing people on the perils of pessimism.

Either way, people better show up for these games.

I can tell you that last year they brought about 100-150 fans to UT and they wre VERY loud and very organized. Did a great job supporting the Zips and the game was, I think on a weeknight. If you get them on Saturday they could be a few hundred strong. They certainly amped up the Savage crowd. Loudest I've heard it in years. But they do have several cheers that you will be incredibly sick of before games end. Well behaved and the cheers are profanity free- seemed like a great group. I wish we had a hundred students that supported the Rockets on the road like this group did. They all had matching shirts, too. Unless there's a good crowd at AA it might seem like an Akron home game.

Well since you've made this personal, let's have at it. The one thing that pisses me off most about a lot of our students is that from the moment they step onto campus, they assume that we suck at everything sports-related because we're not Ohio State or Michigan. It takes a lot of effort to get people to drop that notion. I on the other hand, did not come to BG with this preconceived notion, and quite frankly, I've been one of the louder supporters of the team this season. Two other posters on here can attest that prior to this season I wasn't big on men's basketball, mostly because Dan Dakich was a moron that butchered BG basketball for the first two years I was here. (and a few years prior to that) Yes I admit that I was fair-weathered. Hell, the first BG game I ever went to was against Northern Illinois in 2005-06. We blew a 19-point lead with 13 minutes left and lost. That game told me all I needed to know about Dan Dakich. But I digress. Even in its worst form, fair-weatherness is eons better than not giving the team a chance at all, which many of our students seem to be doing. Now that's not to say that we don't have students that scream and stand on the floor for games supporting the guys. But when we have nights like last Wednesday when most of the student section is empty and we have less than 1000 in total attendance for a team that is over .500 in conference play, that is embarrassing. Surely not everybody has night classes on Wednesday.

The other thing that raised a few eyebrows for me was how many of you didn't think we would beat 3-15 Ball State in Muncie a few weeks ago. Pfft, Please! Dan Dakich isn't the coach anymore. Louis Orr will beat 3-15 90%+ of the time. The defensive effort we have is comparable to the top teams in the MAC. His coaching (and recruiting with JJ) have brought us back. I just hope people realize it and bring big crowds for Akron and Kent.

By the way Peregrinner - congrats on your "beheading"!

I agree with most of what you're saying, and I'm with you in hoping people come out to support this team for our final 2 home games. This team has been playing some damn good basketball at home, and they deserve more support than what they've gotten.

I'm right there with you in regards to the past couple years. In fact, had I graduated in '07 with only the previous 4 years to go on I probably would not be as big a fan as I am now. I was at almost every game for the past few seasons, and quite frankly I didn't enjoy myself very often. The basketball was boring, we weren't competitive, and even if we won it usually felt as though it was because the other team sucked so bad. This year is different and I'm genuinely enjoying the games again...it's a great feeling.

In regards to the BSU game, it's not that I expected us to lose (I expected us to win). It's more that I still think it was a good victory simply because road wins are tough in this conference no matter who they're against, BSU included. Look no further than UT for evidence of that. They're 0fer the road, and only lost 1 game at home all year. You haven't been around for as long as some of us, but I still distinctly remember road losses to mediocre Akron & UT teams costing us a chance at the NCAAs in '02. We beat those teams by a combined 49 points in their trips to Anderson, and lost to both in their gyms. That cost us a shot at the tourney that year, plain & simple. So yeah, despite how awful BSU has been, I'm not willing to downplay those wins. MAC road games are a bitch.

Has anyone mentioned this to the marketing dept. or A. Dept? Any flyers being made yet? If its student support we want then we have to be EXTREMELY proactive about it. Just telling your friends and classmates won't do the trick.

For all you old people  it should be bring a friend from work day or something.

 Let's get to the solution. What can I do to play a part? I know as a parent I yell, but I'd like to see everyone involved. We can do this. We can win. Let's motivate this team so tough that even when they go on the road our fans will be with them in spirit. Please tell me what can I do?

A good start would be to keep feeding Nate whatever he ate Sunday before the game. If he can give us 21 & 11 every outing, I'll like our chances no matter who we're playing! Dude's been getting beaten up all year, and still he's coming out and playing his ass off for us.

Globetrotter: You may want to inquire about chairback reserve seats for your father. They're more comfortable than the wooden benches, and only a couple extra bucks per seat. Call the ticket office, I'm sure they'll have plenty of decent seats still available. And if you feel like it feel free to head over to the student section to introduce yourself :)

i have been to every home game except one or two. I think there was one during the GMAC bowl and then I missed one because of work. Also been to an away game. But I agree we need more people there! i'm on the sideline cheering on (with our signs!!) and it would be great having more people cheering.

I am going to be at Eastern this wed cheering them on, but sadly will miss this weekend cause i'm going to Nebraska to cheer on the hockey team. So it would be great to have a full house cheering them on while a few of us that go to every game will be in Nebraska.

But i hope everyone gets out there! No reason not to be!!
