My thoughts on the Akron game
Take them for what they are worth, this is the only game I have been to in general.
The Game Itself: Dull. The experience when I was a studetn v the experience now is night and day, its quiet, music and the band play at the wrong times and the students just are not there. The game ended up being pretty exciting but the House that Roars is a memory.
Chris Knight: He showed flashes, but like others have said he is just way too passive. I hope over the summer he learns to attack the basket. He was the only one on the floor who seemed to have the chance to be an elite basketball player.
Akron: They didnt look very good to me. No one stood out and they are not great in any area. If that is the best the MAC has to offer than the MAC is way down this year.
Coach Orr: This team is not fundamentally sound: fouls, (especially the Moten foul at the end) horrible free throw shooting and the offense got the team one open shot all night. The rest are one on ones and put backs. If this offense is better than Dakiches I did not see it today. Also the team does not run off picks or set picks well at all.
Nate Miller: Still my favorite player but I am wavering. He is forcing things too much and it is hurting the team. He is probably the best basketball player we have but today I saw too much Martin Samarco in him.
JJ: Will be a solid PG for this team for a long time but probably never great. He is at the very least aggressive, which this team was not for most of the game.
Ryan Simms: Why doesnt he play more? When he came in during the first half it was clear that he was the only one on the floor with any energy, he is by far the fastest falcon we have, and defended his man good and was aggressive on offense. He was a breath of fresh air in this game when everyone else was walking up and down the court.
Cameron Madlock: Raw but athletic just like everyone else said. IMO he could end up being very good.
Marc Larson: Ugghhh, I was wrong. But if he can get an offenseive game and add some muscle he will be able to compete. Whoever made the comment about his neck making his length deceptive that is one of the most perceptive comments I have heard about a player, and it is very true.
Otis Polk: Ugghhh, I was wrong. He will end up being a solid MAC player but never spectacular IMO.
Daryl Clements: A glue player every team needs, not great at anything but wont ever hurt the team badly.
Brian Moten: A great shooter, made one of the most foolish plays I have ever seen someone make to lose the game for us. We played great defense and made them throw up a ball at the end that was not going in and he basically shoved the guy as he was shooting a 3 pointer. Didnt go for the block or steal just shoved him, and they iced it and me and my dad left.
I see what you all have been saying. That team was as frustrating as I have seen them

Re: My thoughts on the Akron game
Why doesn't Sims play more?? Well I thought the same thing a while back but its been pretty clear why he isn't. Yeah, he's fast and quick but he produces next to nothing when he's out there. Did he even score today? When I saw Sims coming in a lot today , needless to say I knew we were in trouble.Globetrotter wrote:Take them for what they are worth, this is the only game I have been to in general.

Does Daryl clements score?
No. He still is a very important part of the game.
Sims can handle the ball and help us get up the floor in transition. He can also hastle the other teams 1. He made a great transtition play and had a great assist to I think Polk. Simms needs more PT. He is the most active player we have on our roster and when he came in the entire game sped up.
BTW I was looking at all of the fans standing on the sideline across from the BG bench and could not figure out which one you were? What were you wearing?
PS someone said it in the chat room and I will agree in here, there should be a play run atleast 1 in every 5 times down the floor for Moten to get open for a 3. He is drastically underutilized. He is also our best foul shooter. Run something to get him open near three range if he is not open tell him to pump fake and then go to the hole to try to draw a foul.

I'm just curious, why did you change between games? You had on your traditional brown T-shirt with "falconboy" on the back for the girls game. Did you work up too much of a sweat after the guys game or something?Falconboy wrote:I'm just saying he hasn't done much when he's out there that I've seen. I don't know, I've always worn the Anderson Animals shirt during the women's games for a couple of years now. Its kind of a tradition with me I guess. I don't have such with the men really. Maybe I should wear the AA shirt to men's games to see if we win more.bgsufalcon24 wrote:I'm just curious, why did you change between games? I know today was your first game of the season, so I'll give you a pass. I'll start by saying that today was by FAR the best Sims has played all year. He has been absolutely nonexistent the entire year. He's been very poor in almost every facet of the game all season long. I was happy to see him play better today, hopefully he'll finally start to get comfortable, but it's been a very disappointing Sophomore season from Sims. Even his shooting, which was a positive last year, has really been bad this season. I can honestly say that I don't think more PT for Ryan Sims is the answer for this team at this point.Globetrotter wrote:Does Daryl clements score?

What this team needs is to start doing better in 2 key areas: Take care of the ball & shoot FTs. Those are two fundamental areas in which we really struggle. The turnovers thing is due, in large part, to not having a developed true PG. Joe Jak is the only true PG on the team, and he's still pretty raw as a Freshman. I love Nate Miller, but he's no PG and when we try to make him into one he struggles mightily with turning the ball over.
We're just flat out not an overly talented team and the talent we do have is mostly still tied up in potential and not developed. Personally I don't see Sims, Larson, or Clements ever contributing much to a good MAC team. Jakubowski, Polk, and Knight all have ability, but none are yet ready to be key players on a good team. Miller & Moten are our only two players that are really ready to contribute on a nightly basis; and for Moten this is a relatively recent development. I do agree, though, that we need to do more to get him more shots, he's our best offensive weapon.
I love what this team has done this year, and I'm hopeful that they can make a run in the MAC tourney. Still, after watching them all year, it's apparent they're still a work in progress.

Akron is fundementally sound. The same things you complain about on our team, they don't have to deal with. That and 'Hand Soap' shoots the friggin lights out. They also don't have (small) Wood.
This game was about free throws. The good fundemental team won.

Re: My thoughts on the Akron game
When McLeod played that Akron team would have been in the bottom, bottom, of the league. It is now night and day. I was expecting a team like the Kent teams I remember with 4-5 balls to the wall guards who were in your face all night and a couple decen big men. That team was nothing special. The Niz wrote:Globetrotter wrote:

I will agree to disagree. If the team comes out lethargic like that again I would pull anyone out and put in Simms and Madlock just to get them running and get them transitioning better. Lethargic is the only way to describe what I saw. Simms can make a difference on a slow team just by not being slow.hammb wrote:I know today was your first game of the season, so I'll give you a pass. I would also add Knight to the ready to contribute on a nightly basis category. I would also add him to the "I am pretty sure he doesnt realize how good he can be" category as well, (Especially with 2 years of a 6-9 280 lb guy next to him to absorb alot of punishment.) Right now he just quietly puts up Freshman of the year numbers.
As far as the PG goes, JAKO got the ball up the court and got us into our offense. If you want him to penetrate and kick he cant do that consistently yet but he certainly is not a liability. I blame the scheme more than him, because from what I saw tonight he isnt even asked to do that. He made a great pass to Polk down low for a score. He is a keeper, especially if we can get a big guard next to him.
Another thing I neglected to mention. A bad fundamentally sound team forgets that they dont need to win the game every possession. As in, trying to match the other teams three the next time down court.
I dont think PG had anything to do with the bad play today. If it did it was because the system has been adjusted to get the ball out of his hands more because he is not ready yet for that responsbilty...and that very well could be the case.
I think we had no energy to start the game, we are horrific at foul shooting which to me is absolutely embarassing and the offense we run is no better then dakiches. Still lots of bad shots taken, lots of one on one, lots of head down head to the basket...no second option considered.

My thoughts on the game: I hate Nick Dials. I've hated him all 3 years he p layed for Akron. He's a piece of sh*t and I hope he fails in life.

Dials is definitely a guy you love to hate. Impossible to figure out why he's so good- doesn't look like a player. The older BG fans will remember Monk Montgomery, still my all-time most hated Falcon, only because there was absolutely NO understadning how this scrawny, slow, little twerp was so good. Plus he had small man syndrome, just like Dials, and he was always strutting around on the court.
UT's equivalent was a guy named John Hodak, but after two surprising years we found out he really WASN't any good- just scrawny and cocky. Just lit up BG one night though, but I even hated Hodak.
