Attendance

Post by dannyk »

I know that the kids were on break and the weather was lousy but it is tough to watch two playoff games with attendance of 800 and 1,000.

I was at some of the high school playoff games at Tam O last week that had much larger crowds. In Cleveland HS playoff games that were getting just over 2,000.

What I'm getting at is a larger theme and it is not just this week. Our attendance over the last 6 years or so seems to keep dipping a little more each year. Even though we had a decent year record wise, I am very concerned for the overall future of this program.

Will the students and townies ever rally around this team or are those days long gone?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I had over a foot of snow in my driveway yesterday. I didn't leave my house all day. I would have loved to have gone (excluding the result), but Ohio weather being what it is....

Attendance numbers like that make me question just how many hardcore BG hockey fans there are.

This is just my theory but it seems that since we havent been good in recent memory we are lacking that 25-35 year old fan demographic. The old timers have watched great BG hockey and love the program. But besides a group of dedicated students and old timers who frequent this board it seems the rest of the student pop. and townies are content to come watch Michigan once a year if it fits in their schedule.

In defense of the people staying home though I understand that it gets old watching a team that has been struggling

Jesus falconboy. If I lived outside of town there is no way I would have gone. As much as I love my team, to me its worth it to stay alive and root for them another day. When there is a legitamate risk to someone's safety I don't blame them for this. I was disappointed with the numbers the last couple days too, but really, what could you possibly expect from these people?

Hockey has outdrawn basketball for the past 5 years. We have easily more dedicated fans than basketball.

I'm can understand about people who live far away. I'm talking Wood Cnty , BG immediate area people, but yeah I can understand people not wanting to go out in a snow storm.

TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT!

Post by BrightStar »

I have had tickets in my wallet for two weeks. I had to waste two of them last night because of the weather here in Seneca County, so give a break to those who didn't want to risk an accident or worse for our beloved Falcon icers. However, we WILL be there tonight to witness what I am hoping will be our first playoff series win in years. That's enough of a start for me for the improvement of our hockey program. Now I hope we get many of those fair weather fans out that really make the difference financially in the success of the program. If I lived in BG, I would have been there last night.

Roll along.....

Sadly I have to work this evening and won't be able to make the game. The past couple weeks just haven't worked well in terms of scheduling.

Just to put in my two cents.... there were quite a few really dedicated people that came back two or three days ahead of the storm staying at other people's places so they wouldn't have to miss the game. I know a lot of people from Cleveland and their parents threatened to tell them the car was stolen if they left. I know not everyone is like that, but there are a LOT of really dedicated fans that make every.single.game and cheer on the icers. Sure, the last two nights have been disappointing, especially since I could actually hear myself when I was chanting, but I'd blame it on the weather more than the fans.

Hey the guys know what's going on with attendance---were they there last night?! I agree that you need to keep yourself safe to arrive another day. Some don't have all wheel drive or a clear path to the rink. Please refrain on the old timer bit- --we're experienced old is for shoes, cheese & wine & it's better than the alternative hope you live as long!!! :D

The problem is pro hockey. Plain and simple. People want to see a fight at a hockey game and they want to drink beer. Get drunk and fight. That is what hockey is to a lot of people. College hockey in Bowling Green doesn't offer these two things so people don't come. The younger, middle aged fans you see at the games are there with their kids. It's something to do with the little ones.

Someone remind me mess the !@#$!!! out of Falconboy next time I see him. I had 14" with drifts easily over 3 feet. I'm Goofy, I'm not stupid. Most people around here know there isn't much I love more than hockey, but my little gerbil mobile would not have made it BG this weekend.
