Like everyone else has said, ugly ugly game. Way too many turnovers. We beat ourselves and that's what hurts the most about the loss. After we played so poorly in the first half and were only down 2 I thought if we improved in the second half we would win easy. That did not happen.
The Buffalo/Miami game was actually way more entertaining. We ended up sticking around for the whole game. Credit to UB, for a team that was the #12 seed playing the defending tournament champs, the Bulls played their hearts out. Miami survived that game. They should be feeling very lucky to be moving on.

Don't let the close score fool you, this game gave the MAC Tournament a black eye tonight, and sadly, BG was more to blame. Our players and coaches did their best impression of deer in headlights. Maybe all the hunter (burnt) orange in the crowd was to blame.hammb wrote:So glad I couldn't make the trip to Cleveland to watch that game...my god did it sound ugly on the radio.
Considering Coors Light isn't even beer, you really did get screwed.
These last three games exposed our inability to generate consistent offense and put the ball in the basket. We've scored less than Paul Krugman during Spring Break.hammb wrote: The offseason is upon us. Hopefully the newcomers next year are ready to contribute & the returning players improve. We exceeded expectations this season, but it was also painfully clear that we have a ways to go before we're competing for a championship.
The team has progressed from awful to good, which was not easy and not even expected to happen this year given our inexperience. To take the next step, the scorers on this team need to bump up their averages by at least 5 points each. If Darnell Brown and Scott Thomas are the shooters they're reported to be, they both should have the opportunity to earn some playing time and add some juice to the attack.
That's defnitely what it seems like from the outside, so we have to ask the question: if BG lost to Kent State, would the 'hungry' mindset have been enough to reverse the outcomes of the UB and UT games? (Miami would have been a struggle regardless)bgsufalcon24 wrote:Most obvious fact of the night:
Bowling Green had their one big, shining moment in their final home game agaisnt #23 Kent State. That was our national championship. After that game, it was readily apparent that we did not give a rats azz about the rest of the season. You have to physically try to lose to Buffalo by 40 to accomplish it, and we did. Then a poor effort at Miami, followed by the definition of pathetic tonight at the Q. We just didn't care anymore.
These last three road games left a bad taste in everyone's mouth, but I'm not sure I'd trade the Kent win for a UB win and squeaking by in the first round of the tourny.

Nah, I would say we've progressed from dreadfully awful to mildy mediocre. Next year with Marschall coming back, D.Brown, Thomas and Calhoun adding to the mix we should be a lot better , still not championship caliber but a lot better.

I don't see how adding two freshman to the mix is going to make us that much better. Marschall should help if he is healthy and stays that way. The hard part will be to find enough minutes to keep everyone happy and in the flow of the game. It is great to have Marschall back but if he plays the PF Knights minutes go down. If he plays center Polks minutes drop. Nate Miller is a lock at the 3, and I would start Moten at the 2 with Clements backing both positions up. Jakabowski at the point. Other than spot minutes at back up pg, the freshman should not see the court unless injuries occur. This team has a chance to be good next season.Falconboy wrote:JoeFalcon wrote:hammb wrote: The offseason is upon us. The biggest plus for BG next year wil be if Polk gets in serious shape- everytime he put together a little run he had to come out. Marscall will give you three reasonably skilled big bodies inside and if Polk plays consistently like he played against us he has All-MAC potential. With everyone returning I think the frosh won't have to provide too much-
That is the key man. When Otis stays on the court he is productive. Very productive. He's a serious presence in the middle defensively and he has potential to developing some offensive game as well. As you said though he needs to get in better shape conditioning wise, and he also needs to be more disciplined defensively. If he stays on the court he is an all MAC caliber talent.h2oville rocket wrote:The biggest plus for BG next year wil be if Polk gets in serious shape- everytime he put together a little run he had to come out. They need somebody to develop into a reliable point guard. I'm hoping Jakubowski is that guy, but he's been so hot/cold all year. He's a freshman playing at a tough position for freshmen, so hopefully he improves. This scheme is reliant on a guard who can beat his man off the dribble and distribute the ball to beat help defenses. Specifically we need somebody good enough at this to take the ball out of Nate Miller's hands. He shouldn't be running the show at the top of the arc, that's not the best use of his skills.
We need Knight to improve. He's got tons of talent but needs to be more assertive offensively...he should be setting up in the post, not shooting 3 pointers.
Hopefully Marschall can come back. Ideally I see his return not taking minutes from Polk, but taking them from Larson. Marc is just not talented enough to warrant 25 minutes a night. He's a hard worker and a big body, but but should mostly be used in a smaller role getting 10-15 minutes per night off the bench. Eric will give us some much needed scoring. Offensively he's as skilled as anybody in the MAC. Unfortunately, unless he's improved dramatically, you cannot count on more than 20 minutes from him because of fouling trouble.
I'm hopeful that some of the freshmen can come in and hit some shots. Specifically I'm hopeful that Brown can take some of Clements' minutes. We need more of an outside threat, as right now Moten is the only player on the roster who is really a threat with the jumper...JoJak was occasionally, but not enough consistency.
If Marschall comes back healthy this team has a chance to be pretty good. What they really need is a go-to scorer and he might very well be that player. Beyond that some consistency from the PG spot is our most important need, hopefully that will come with an offseason of work from Jakubowski. If Orr can keep this group together and get the returners to improve, we can be a pretty good MAC team. Not going to predict a championship, but 10 wins in conference is certainly within reason.
