Stan Joplin was just fired as Rocket head coach. Discuss amongst yourselves.

No comment other than the fact that Toledo high school players might get recruited by the Rockets now.

This is a classic example of an AD looking to put their own personal stamp on the program. Division I AD's make their reputations on fundraising and high profile coaching hires.

O'Brien had Amstutz, Joplin and Ehlen already in place when he arrived. He now has the opportunity to bring his own people in on the basketball side and attempt to drum up some renewed enthusiam for the programs in the community in conjunction with the arena renovations.

I think there were other factors but I think you hit the major ones squarely in the noggin, JF.

What ever happened to Jay Eck, anyway?

Man, that was a dude with one bad haircut. And the he would jump around on the sidelines. Sheesh. It looked like what my little girls calls the "potty dance".

I'm not an insider in terms of recruiting but, yeah, lots of them, including Buford, Roberts and others (I don't think he went for Floyd ;-) ). Recruiting and getting are two different things- we had Robierre Cullers, the City League POY and leading scorer I think, a few years back as well- from St. Francis. Was the defensive stopper on the Stempin led teams.

I don't recall Dakich getting very many either (Almanson, Floyd as a transfer)- sometimes kids don't want to stay around the hometown.

The AD has cited a need for new energy, waning fan support and a large number of recruits failing to become academically eligible as the reasons behind the firing.

I wonder if Toledo Tom is feeling a little less secure today?
