CCHA @ the Joe
With as relatively few (compared to other sports) D1 teams in hockey, it's a shame that BG can't play each team at some time over several years. Scheduling seems to be based on personal relationships between coaches. We're traveling all over in the CCHA; let's mix in some Minn/Minn State weekends. I've never been to St. Cloud, or seen NoDak's palace.
Line up some nice non-conference games, forget tournaments, unless BG wants to host one featuring teams with coaches who either played or coached at BG - that'll kill December.

well BGFan I would rather see the WCHA win the title. If BG doesn't win it, I sure as hell don't want UM, MSU, or Miami to win. I was disgusted that MSU won last year. I'd be even more disgusted if Miami won.

Well, that's exactly my point. Do I root for ND? No. ScUM? NO! What about NMU? Don't know enough about them plus they'll probably get murdered by scUM anyway.SicSic80 wrote:NEVERbgsufalcon24 wrote:I'll pretty much be rooting for the Redhawks the rest of the way., and I emphasize the word NEVER will I "root" for the preps!!! Miami is the last team remaining, and even though I have every reason to hate them because they knocked us out, I'd rather ride with the in-state MAC/CCHA team to go all the way. There really aren't any alternatives. The WCHA can pretty much go blow at this point, and I'll be damned if I'll ever root for some Hockey East or ECHA team from the northeast. Never.
The, "follow thy fellow MAC team" idea does not ever apply to Toledo though.

I'd be interested in your reasoning behind this? Is it just so you have more ammunition to blast the CCHA in years down the road?PegCityFalcon wrote:well BGFan I would rather see the WCHA win the title. As much as I don't like Michigan when we play them, they're the team I root for once BG bows out. And as much as I HATE HATE HATE Michigan STATE, a small, very very small, part of me was glad to see them win the tourney last year. It makes the league as a whole look better, which in turn helps us.

+1,000 "HATE" MSU (they were #7 on my original list)
Which leads me to - before being corrected by my Falcon brethren, I guess I would root for the preps when they line up against either the Scuds or B-nuts. Not a contest I ever look forward to watching, however if/when it aids our beloved Falcons - "Go Hawk........Ohhhhhhhh....s"

I don't understand how anyone can root for a rival. I will compare it to the NHL. When Ottawa was in the Stanley Cup, I sure as hell wasn't going to cheer for them. If the Leafs don't win I don't want a rival winning. I think rooting for Miami or Michigan makes you a traitor. I don't understand people's logic. Why not root for Toledo to win in basketball or football?

You're comparing the NHL to college hockey. Apples and oranges. In the NHL winning depends heavliy on how deep the pockets are of the owners and how willing they are to open them up to "buy" the best players. Not quite the case in college hockey (although some may debate this fact when it comes to coach's salaries and recruiting budgets). First and foremost, it's the perception that the recruit has of the university, coaches, et al. After that it's the perception of the league. Therefore I would much rather see the championship game come down to two different teams from two different leagues, and have one of those teams be from the CCHA. When that happens, however much it pains me, I'll pull for that CCHA team. If the perception of a recruit is that one league is better than another it helps recruiting for all members of that league when they win the NCAA championship.

Traitor? Really? I guess i can see your point when you're talking about a direct rival.. i.e. Toledo. But in hockey we don't have a huge rivalry with Michigan or Miami, and even MSU has faded out in recent years. Of course I would never in any circumstance root for one of those teams against us. And following your logic.. it would also be wrong to root for another team when having them win would help us. For example when we rooted for the teams playing UNO to win to help us in the standings. (Granted I believe in getting your own business done and not relying on others, but that's another story..) I think we all did it, including me, but I guess that makes me a traitor b/c I cheered for OSU & NMU at different times this year.PegCityFalcon wrote:I don't understand how anyone can root for a rival. BGFan hit it right on the head about attracting recruits. Why not come to a league where you're going to be playing the top competition? I'd rather come to a league where I can play against defending NCAA champions over a bunch of soft teams like in the CHA and that other small league. It just makes sense.

I was born in the state of Michigan, so rooting for them once my Falcons become ineligible is exactly what I am going to do. If that makes me a traitor - oh well - so be it!PegCityFalcon wrote:I don't understand how anyone can root for a rival. I will compare it to the NHL. After going to Miami and being there in general with those people, I will never root for them. They just hopped up on my list of most-hated teams, just behind UT, OSU, and ND. I will also never, ever root for ND (obviously) or MI, so I'm going to root for Northern
If they don't make it...well, I'll just watch and not root for anyone. It's not because we're rivals or anything and it's not because they beat BG, but it's primarily just because I really dislike them.

This is the stand I will be taking as well when it comes to the final four at The Joe. There are only two college teams I will ever root for, and one isn't playing at The Joe, and the other doesn't have varsity hockey. Now I may say I want a certain team to win, but I certainly wouldn't be rooting for that team, as in the end I'll care less if they win the league tourney or they don't.Altoid_storm wrote:I'll just watch and not root for anyone.

Well, you're DEFINITELY in the minority on this one. All I ever heard about in last year's coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals was badly Canada wanted Ottawa to beat Anaheim. Maybe it was just a made up media creation, but it sure seemed like no matter if you were from Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, or Montreal, you were rooting for Ottawa to win. It's been like this the last 3 years, first with Edmonton v Carolina, then Calgary v Tampa Bay, then Ottawa v Anaheim. These series have been more like Canada v United States. You can't tell me that Canadian fans would root for a team from California over one of their own Canadian franchises, even in a direct rivalry situation.PegCityFalcon wrote:I don't understand how anyone can root for a rival. And if I'm wrong about this, then I blame the media, because this was all over the sports talk stations/media for 3 years straight now. Canada's getting really pissed that they keep losing to the southern US teams.
