All MAC Games Will Count The Same In 2008!

Post by BGSU33 »

I contacted the MAC Office today to ask a question concerning the format that will be used to determine the MAC Divisional Champions this year. After noticing that BG will not play all the MAC East (won’t face Temple) and that a few other schools won’t play all divisional foes, coupled with the unbalanced league and number of teams in each division, I figured it would be changing. It is. The overall MAC record will be used to determine the East and West Champion. This was the exact response I got from the conference office today:

“Overall MAC record will be used. No more standings with the division-only record will be kept.”

Funny enough, if this was the format used last year (based on the actual MAC games played which differed for some teams), BG would have been MAC East Champions as we finished 6-2 (overall in the MAC) ahead of Miami (5-2) and Buffalo (5-3). All three teams were 4-2 in the MAC East. Obviously the format was different last year and not everyone played the same number of MAC games so its sort of like comparing apples to oranges. But it goes to show the difference of how if conference vs. divisional games count, it can changes the picture in the standings.

I like this format a lot. It makes all MAC games important again no matter who you play. In the old format, a cross-divisional game was essentially a non-conference game unless of a tie-break. This way, all eight MAC games "really" count as opposed to the five (MAC West) or six (MAC East) games that you played in your division. I like the change.

With all this being said, I see us going into Athens at 5-0 (in the MAC - OOC aside) and if that game works out the way it should/we all hope, we enter the Glass Bowl, with the Freaklings for the first time :D, with a chance to go undefeated in conference play. I see us then :smt021 the sprockets and then celebrating an undefeated conference season. :smt026 . 158?

Hopefully this is the end of divisional play in the MAC! We have not used it correctly in any sport to date and it is a waste to have it. The 2 teams with the best records should face each other in the MAC football championship game each year.

I doubt it's going to eliminate the divisions, I just think it's going to put an equal importance on all conference games. But time will tell.

I would agree if the MAC can come up with a somewhat even schedule for all teams, but then again, we all know what happens when the conference gets their hands on the scheduling. My guess is that we will end up with 3-4 very strong teams playing each other and one of the weaker teams ending up with a better record because of the schedule. The only fair way is for all teams to play everyone in their division and have a TRUE division champion and have the division champions lay each other.

I think ESPN might think twice about televising the championship game if this proposal were accepted.

Depends on whether the cheerleaders are involved.

Absolutely agree. Good to see that the MAC office came to this decision as well.
