The GMAC Bowl Trip

Post by billchase2 »

so as of right now, the directors are going between driving and flying. hopefully we'll get to fly there... though a 20+ hour band trip could be a lot of fun! :D

A 20+ Band bus trip would be fun, I agree, but then again it would be in the wintertime, in the dead of December, and really close to xmas. (icy roads, snow storms, blah blah blah, blah blah blahity blah, you get my (snow)drift. haha!) I'd be scared, to be honest, if we drove.

Anyways, I think plane would be better and faster. Cheaper... I don't know. That's up to them to do the math.

Um.... yeah. I love the flicc-trombone bus.... but not enough to spend 20 straight hours in it (subtracting time for potty breaks).

Actually the directors don't have a big say in this Chase. It's how much the school wants to give us to help pay for the trip that will ultimately decided what we do. With flying, there is also a lot more liability with instruments and such that the band will have to worry about. We will be on a 18-21 hour bus ride...just bring all the jokes you can that don't deal with dead babies and we will be fine!

Ever been in a plane during a snow storm? If you say you rather fly then I doubt you ever have...

Jessica, may I remind you, that we're going to the GULF OF MEXICO. Snow isn't exactly common down there. Once you get out of the Appalacians in KY and TN, the chances of snow are about Zero.

BTW, I want to fly. I've done the BG-Mobile drive, and its not terribly exciting. According to mapquest (which is occasionally reliable),

Total Est. Time: 14 hours, 33 minutes Total Est. Distance: 902.57 miles.

Only problem with flying is going to be all of the freakin' luggage. Half of the sousaphone cases would die, all of the percs' stuff, the uniforms, the hats, the ladders, the secretary box, the fire extinguishers, the speakers, water jugs, water bottles, etc. ALL of that stuff would have to be checked at the airport, and we would have to pray that it all ends up where we want it to. I believe they would truck the instruments etc to Mobile, just like they normally do forthe football equipment, even when they fly.

I've flown in december before from Cleveland to KS. I know how it is like when it snows. (Chardon isn't the capital of the snowbelt in Ohio for nothing!)

So, yes, I do know what I'm saying when I say I'd rather fly. There are a lot of reckless drivers out there. I'm more scared of 1.) an accident regarding weather or 2.) an accident regarding some stupidass hitting our bus. Besides, who knows what the weather is going to be like? Either way, I'd still rather fly.

LOL.... for 14 hours? (And keep in mind that's car time, not bus time...) I just don't want anyone in that bathroom in the back. I will padlock the door.

Oh, and for your amusement, see what happens to bandies on bus trips:

I personally have never flown before...but I do know what it's like to be stuck in vehicle on the highway for long periods of time. My dad drives a semi, and I've gone lots of places with him. AND, I've ridden to Savannah Georgia twice. It's not exactly a cup of tea. Bus rides are cool...but not 20 hour ones! Flying would be cool, and I'd say that almost have to drive all of the equipment down there...it would be like pulling teeth to get all that stuff through an airport. However, either way it goes...I will be spending most of the Christmas season with approximately 230 of my closest friends!(Grads/Directors/Truck Crew included). YAY ALABAMA! HERE WE COME!

honestly, i'm all about either one. no matter how you get there, band trips are always a blast. i've been on band bus rides to both florida and texas from this area... and they are quite long. but if we end up doing that... everyone just needs to bring a bunch of good movies and i'll make sure to print off a huge joke list (and bring the book i got on the cinncy trip) for the trumpet/mello bus! (especially the ones that mcmetz and i were talking about at the women's game last night  )

plane

Post by Ohiogal »

Both times the band went to the bowl games during my tenure (Raisin and Las Vegas) we flew with the cheerleaders and team members that weren't dressing for the game. It's a chartered plane so it might be a little different (standing at the gate and all) than flying a commercial flight. But, then again, when we flew it was way before 9/11.

My in-laws live in Louisiana and the drive really isn't that bad.... only bad spots are the mountains (if anyone gets car sick). And don't make the mistake we all made when we went to California thinking it was going to be warm. It can get chilly down there.

Good luck and have a great time!

Here's a little tip (from my military days).

1. Buy a two-liter bottle of soda
2. Empty the soda out of the bottle
3. Pee in the bottle
4. Screw the cap back on after peeing into the bottle. The bottle may be a little warm after the first use.

There you go!
