Memphis vs Texas......

Post by Falconboy »

Dang, if BG somehow could accumulate just a quarter of Memphis's talent and size combination we'd be freakin amazing. They're only weakness is FT shooting. For a "mid-major" (and those are some big quotations I'm using) they're talent is ridiculous.

Memphis isn't a mid major basketball program, and it hasn't been for years.

Memphis and Xavier for that matter are not mid-majors.

I realize that hence the quotes. They will still be labeled that by many purely cuz of conference affiliation. Memphis must throw a ton of resources towards their basketball program to have gotten this good out of C-USA.

I have yet to hear Memphis referred to as a mid major in hoops. C-USA has long been considered a pretty good hoops conference (rightly or wrongly). Beyond that Memphis is paying top dollar for a top coach and has plenty of facilities to foster a major basketball program.

Memphis, Xavier, and Gonzaga are all examples of major basketball programs that don't necessarily play in major conferences. Basketball, unlike football, allows programs to transcend their conference level.

Memphis was frighteningly good the other night. Against Mich State, they looked like the Phoenix Suns playing against my old CYO team.

C-USA was considered this when UC, Louisville, and Marquette joined Memphis at the top of the league. The league took a step back loosing those three, and really needs a Houston or UAB to step things up for it still to be considered a pretty good hoops conference

Agreed, but I still don't hear people referring to them as a "Mid-Major" too often.

They don't necessarily label them as mid major. I do hear over and over that Memphis has not played anyone. Their foul shooting could still do them in. Hopefully for my bracket it is in the final four. :-)

I haven't heard the term "mid-major" used much this year. Instead, I'm hearing "non-power conferences". Probably that asshat Billy Packer's doing.

I had to rewind the DVR a few times during the Memphis game, when Texas got a steal, ran the floor, missed a shot, and Memphis had two guys inside the 3pt arc at the other end cherry picking for an easy dunk. Packer blamed Texas for "not matching up on defense".

Way to go Tigers! Can you believe the Freak got the Final Four correct??? I better be winning some money this year. As long as NC beats Kansas and Memphis beats UCLA, I could be golden. I have Memphis beating NC for the title. They looked awesome against MSU and TX.
