Albany's Michael Leighton stops 98 shots...and loses!

Jonathan Matsumoto had three of the 101 shots for Philly in the longest AHL game in history.

Jonathan Matsumoto had three of the 101 shots for Philly in the longest AHL game in history.

So, he provided his team with just under 3% of it's scoring chances. If they could have dressed 34 of him they would have gotten the same result.

I've always felt he was a bit over-rated and that Foster carried him during their high-scoring sophomore season together.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm going to have to disagree with you guys.

Yeah, he did get a lot more chances when he played on a line with Foster, but that's what happens when a linemate insists on going coast-to-coast every single possession and you're there to clean up whatever happens.

Look at his stats during the previous regular season in Philadelphia - top 5 in goals, points, assists (I think) and 3rd best shooting percentage. Seems pretty good to me, not overrated in my opinion.

Plus, at least from an outsider's perspective, it seemed like he provided some necessary extra leadership.

I agree with Peregrinner about Matsumoto and Foster. I always thought that Matsumoto seemed to be a more skilled player than Foster. I still remember one goal(can't remember who it was against) where he toe-dragged around a defender on a one on one and roofed a shot past the goalie. I remember a few times where he made some D-men look pretty bad. Foster seemed to get by more on hustle and hard work than skill, but thats just my opinion. Also, Matsumoto is over 2 years younger than Foster and is doing just as well as him in the AHL, for what its worth. Matsumoto is also doing a lot better in his first pro season than Foster did in his.

I think the goal you're talking about was in the St. Lawerence game Dec. 10, 2005. Mats came across the blue line, toe dragged the defender who then went sliding across the ice, and then put a laser of a shot just in under the crossbar. It was probably one of the prettiest goals I've seen in the ice arena.

I agree with Peregrinner. Matsumoto may have only had 3% of the shots, but he was on the AHL Team Leaders page pretty high up as a rookie, he was on all sorts of different lists because he was producing so well, and I don't think he is overrated at all, at least not there.

For the record, I only posted it because of the 98 shots... the Matsumoto part was an afterthought as I posted it.
