My two cents revisited:Letter to the Editor

Stuck in between one saying how great UT is, and the other hammering Coach Brandon. whatever.

at least they printed it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Printed 11/30/2004

UT fans showed no respect for anthem
Recently, I returned home to northwest Ohio to attend the big football game between Bowling Green and Toledo at the Glass Bowl. I found the behavior of many of the UT students during the playing of the national anthem disrespectful and appalling. Is it too much to ask students and fans to put down the "Thunderstix," and the air horns, and be quiet for about three minutes?

As a current member of the U.S. Armed Forces, I have seen the sacrifices fellow Americans have made which allow these insolent fans to attend this and other sporting events. Their behavior at the game was an insult to all citizens who hold dear the values of this country, regardless of what team you support on the field.

Occasionally, I may witness someone forgetting to remove their hat, or a few individuals talking or eating through the anthem, but never have I seen such a large group of so-called adults act so disgracefully.

The majority of Bowling Green and Toledo fans in attendance, as well as the athletes on the field, acted responsibly and respectfully before, during, and after the game.

To those who have difficulty understanding proper protocol during the Star Spangled Banner, UT's President Dr. Johnson may want to consider requiring a course for these young men and women on U.S. citizenship. Until then, maybe he should think about renaming the UT football stadium the "No Class Bowl."

well put, Mitch! I don't remember if I posted it here or not, but a friend of mine standing next to me at the game got back from a year or so in Iraq back in April, and when they started in with the thundersticks and air horns, he turned to my dad and said "I just wanted to beat these guys, now I hope we kick the (crap) out of the (fockers)!!"

everytime I'm reminded of that moment, I feel a little less guilty for starting a "BG! SU!" cheer during the playing of their alma mater...

The letter knocking our supposed poor sportsmanship is pretty lame.

EDIT: As is the letter knocking Brandon.

Toledo fans stink.

:supz: Well Said, Mitch.

But I guess from reading the other articles, we have no class in defeat.

Funny thing is I remember in 2001 Amstutz snapped at people for asking why Bolden didn't play. He didn't once acknowledge the fact the BG's offense rolled all over them that night.

Goes with the rivalry.

Well done, Mitch... you're casting pearls before swine, but sometimes it's worth a shot.

The reason trhe student section did not acknowledge the anthem is because they neve heard the announcement that the anthem was starting. Same with many BG fans. There was a lot of people that did not hear what was happening. I was on the field during the anthem and I did not hear it until half-way through.

That editorial was really, really pathetic. I'd bet a paycheck the guy who wrote it is NOT a real Vet.

Give us a break you rednecks!

Think what you will about the editorial, but who are you sending the paycheck to?

To say something like that is complete and utter bullshit. I can put up with the redneck jokes, the tractor jokes, the jokes about our campus and students, but to question the military service of someone you don't even know is crap. I am not a veteran, but I totally respect ANYONE that gives up their time and effort to serve this country, whether they're on the front lines of a battlefield or behind a desk once a month for the National Guard.

That statement alone shows a complete lack of class.

Give me a break...

Mitch Gargac...National Guard. 1985 graduate of Stritch. Whether he served a day in his life is up for discussion. I still think it is a joke this is even an issue. Maybe if you guys had a real attendance one day, you would realize how hard it is to hear.

The attendance was nice. Congratulations. But I was right next to the UT student section, and I seemed to hear the national anthem just fine, from start to finish. *shrug*

And now his service is "up for discussion"? Flipper was right... you do suck.

Thats funny, I heard it just fine, and I was UP IN THE BG BAND!!!!! We were up in the far corner of the stadium and I had no problem hearing what was going on!!

In regards to the questioning of military service: I am not going to dignify that with a response.

As I stated in another thread, for everyone's sake, PLEASE go back to UT.

I can buy the fact that there was no finish, and the beginning of the anthem might have been hard to hear, but to continue to clap the Stix, and blow the airhorn through the ENTIRE song was a little much. For any of you who were at the NIU game this year, you might remember that a good faction of the NIU fans continued with the thunderstix during the moment of silence for our football player who collapsed. If you remember Gameday last year, they did a feature on the NIU player who passed away in that porch collapse in Chicago. IIRC, our fans stayed quite calm throughout that very touching piece. Jeff

You DO realize that you simply come on here and confirm everything that we already know about Toledo fans, right?

To put down a great editorial about an obviously tasteless act is pathetic. To attack and make light of someones military service is immature and shows a true sign of a loser.

Run along to your own message boards, or perhaps that D&D tournament will start soon and keep you occupied.

not that I need to even address this classless idiot however....he is entitled to his free speech.

HEY DAN RATHER AKA CasualSLOBserver:

Looks like you figured out how to do a google search. Yep, that is me. If you know so much about me you would know that not only am I a discharged active duty veteran, I returned to active duty with the Army National Guard, and have proudly worn the uniform daily since 1993. And also for the record the Toledo Blade omitted my rank & branch of service. So next time, get your facts from some other source than CBS, Google or a class yearbook.

And if you want to justify the classless behavior of the UT Students to make yourself feel better, go for it.
