It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Good stuff. Five years ago, the "$4 million to be raised privately/locally" would have seemed like a daunting task... but the generous donors that have come forward for the football and basketball building efforts makes it seem easily doable.

Its half a punt as I see it. Good, in that they took the leash off, and are going to let things move ahead. Bad, in that they basically covered only what keeps the building from imploding, and told the community to pay its own way. But the money will come, slowly, but it will. And it leaves a pretty open slate to fill, which I actually like.

Does the Chemistry department have to raise money to improve their labs? Just asking?

Not to get up to par for a university education, I don't think so.

But if they wanted to add suites for Chemistry alums to drink a beer while watching them study or plush lockerrooms to change into their lab coats, then yeah, they might have to raise some money themselves.

To a certain extent, yes they do. Faculty must get grants to make improvements and buy equipment for their labs (not to mention that faculty actually give about half of the money they may get from a grant directly to the University as "overhead"). Faculty without grants will get little done research wise and will only often get some support from the University.
