MAC Track meet at BGSU

Post by factman »

The MAC track meet in at BG this weekend and I just hope we are not embarassed. It certainly doesn't look like our track and field facility is ready to host a meet of this magnitude. They have brought in temporary seating (very minimal) as of today, and the infield is about 50% mud, as they just hydro seeded in the past week or so. It seems to me it would have been better to pass this year on hosting the meet and trading with someone for next year or the year after. I hope I'm wrong, but after a quick drive by the track today, it looks like we have a way to go to even get close to being ready.
I have only attended 3-4 MAC track and field championships, and none for the past 10 years or so, so maybe it has been scaled down, but for some reason I am very bothered and worried it could be a bad weekend for our image!
It is my understanding there will be no spectators inside the fence, and that there is no admission, only for parking, ($10) for the finals. I hope I'm wrong.

I saw it back in the fall - surface looks nice but the rest was a mess. Haven't checked lately but I hope to see it this weekend. When I ran at UT BG had one of the top tracks around- the whole facility was first class. Then, thanks to Johnny Winter, it all went South.

Hmmmm- parking $10 per car. I may have to revaluate my parking plans. Pack the bike in the back of the van, or better yet just ride down. Anyone else planning to attend?

The $10 fee is only for non-Wood County residents ;)

Park across the street and walk over. I'd be curious to see what a real "track" person thinks!

Surface looks nice but there is defnitely an unfinished look to the whole facility. Not much seating and it was pretty crowded for the prelims. The infield is really a mess for the most part but so what? Aside from the javelin there isn't much going on there, and I'm not even sure they throw the jav in the infield. Nice day- I only saw a few prelim heats- UT sprinters qualified two in the 200 while I watched. I suspect hosting next year would have given BG time to dress things up a little but all in all the track is serviceable now.

I was there also, for a couple hours in the afternoon. It is still embarassing to me that the facility has such an unfinished look and we are hosting a MAC Championship. Seems to me it results from PPPP!!! I will wait for today for the final asessment! The crowd should be much bigger and there is just no place to accomodate them.

+1 Didn't matter to me much yesterday as most folks there were coaches or athletes. The set up today was awful. Only way to see the HJ was from about thirty yards BEHIND the pit. The height markers were turned toward the athletes, leaving spectators to guess at the height of the bar. Triple jump was in the middle of the field- Had they reversed the runway and put the pit by the stands it would have been easier to see but there may have been space reasons that prohibited that. If so they wren't obvious.

Throwing area for the discus was pretty sketchy in terms of the turf but otherwise was the most spectator friendly place and the turf doesn't really matter anyway.

I got kicked out of the area that provided the best view of the HJ with the guy using the lame excuse that I couldn't be there because I had ignored the huge sign that said "coaches only" and several ropes that blocked the way there.

The stands weren't even at the finish line, but well down the back straightaway, so any excitement over close finishes would be muted due to the difficult sight lines. But the surface looked pretty nice and in spite of horrendous jumping conditions (major wind) several women popped some nice jumps so it must be fairly springy. Unfortunately I had to leave before the running finals.

Well, the BiG women did a nice job for BG but after the throwers, not much left. All in all though it seemed like a pretty succesful meet- conditions were actually fairly nice by the afternoon and the track was getting some praise from athletes if not from spectators. UT had a decent last day although we certainly expected more points in the HJ and the 200. Triple jumpers picked up 9 which really helped.

The track itself is a polyurathan State-Of-The-Arts facility and was ready for action. And while the field event facilities were ready --- access to them was challenged by soft-ground (sometimes known as mud) and were anything but spectator friendly. Nevertheless, as the grass fills in, and permanent bleachers are established, it will be one of the ultra best facilities in the MAC. Good athletes take all of this in "stride" and are used to the kinds of challenges that the weather/wind offered this last weekend. I thought it was a great meet with some extraordinary athleticism on display.
