Tim Brewster ... still sticking to his guns

Post by MarkL »

Minnesota dismisses kick returner Howell from team

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota kick returner Harold Howell was dismissed from the team for academic reasons.

Coach Tim Brewster said Tuesday that Howell was cut for violations of academic and team guidelines.

Brewster promised big things from the speedy, 5-foot-8 Howell after recruiting him out of Jacksonville, Fla., last year.

In his first season, Howell appeared in 10 games as a reserve receiver and return man. He averaged 23.1 yards on kick returns.

Good for Tim Brewster. One of his first actions as head coach was to dismiss I think four players, including at least one big time defensive star, who were at the center of a sexual assault case. Though the season probably would have gone better with those players, the team and program are better without them. And he's still sticking to his disciplinarian policies. That is a coach with ethics and values ... doesn't matter who the player is, if he doesn't meet the standards of the team, he doesn't make the team. I have a lot of respect for that.

It is nice to see a team that hold realistic standards. i m still sad we have not done the same in our past.

What the hell are you talking about???? Just a couple months ago, Glen Stanley was cut from the progam due to academics. Diyral Briggs was suspended for the GMAC Bowl due to team violations. Michael Ream had to work thru some issues and suspensions due to team rules.

Mark,

I agree about Brewster. It's nice to see him sticking to his policies...MN isn't an attractive job in the Big 11 and the odds are already against him.

MacMan still holds a terrible grudge against GB for not getting rid of AT.

I hold a grudge against more than GB and the AD for not making the right decisions on many cases.
it is good to see that some one is at least making an attempt at doing the right thing...but we will see just how long that lasts and how strong the resolve to continue to do so.

Have you ever thought that just because Brewster is releasing this kid that there are probably other situations unknown to you where he kept a kid and gave the benefit of the doubt?

edit: I'm fairly certain we try to do the right thing at BG. If you don't think so, then take a hike.

Brewster is sticking to his guns and hoping his players don't get involved with them.
