But I guess after reading that Letter to the Editor thread...I kind of figured it out...

Since I don't know the area at all, what is Bowling Green, OH like? What do you all do for fun? Besides pick on schools with phallic symbols for mascots?

Looking forward to seeing all of you in Mobile...Word is hotels are going fast in Mobile, but there are some very inexpensive rooms available in Biloxi, MS at the casinos, which is about an hour away...

Bowling Green Ohio, is a relatively small, family oriented community that mostly only exists because of the major university. You can drive from one end of town to the other on main street in approximately 15 minutes. Once you get outside of the town you are immediately surrounded by farmland, and it is flat as a pancake. There are 2 hills in the town. One where they dug out a pond for the golf course, and the other where they built the hospital.

For the most part Bowling Green embodies the term college town. The population is roughly doubled when students are in town, and a large portion of the year long residents are in some way connected to the university. We have a LOT of Pizza places and bars considering the size of the town. The school also has about a 2:1 girl to guy ratio, so there is plenty of eye candy :)

Other than picking on UT? We do the same thing any college students do...we party. University sports aren't usually the hottest thing to do, but I do think that is changing. On any given weekend there are usually plenty of parties and plenty of people at the bars, and we have bars for pretty much every flavor. We have a couple that have loud music every weekend, a few sports bars, a couple dance clubs, a couple dive bars. The town mall is pretty much crap, so people generally go to Toledo for shopping. Restaurants in BG are fairly lousy as well. We have all the fast foods, and tons of pizza places, as I mentioned before. A couple of the pizza places are locally own places that are VERY good. What we don't have is a single mid-scale chain restaurant (Olive Garden, Applebees, TGI Fridays, etc, etc). Not sure why not, but I would think that something like that would be useful in BG.

All in all BG is a fun town. Its not the most happening place in the world, but its got the staples of your average college town. Ya'll should schedule a home game with us sometime and you can come up and visit!

BG's got some of the best pizza places you will find. Pisanellos has probably the best pizza in town while Campus Pollyeyes has some amazing stuffed breadsticks.

Toledo is 20 minutes away and easy to get to (Thus, the BG/UT game is the 'Battle of I-75') Maumee's got some shopping areas and it's about 10 minutes away. Same goes for Perrysburg. More and more students are starting to discover b-ball and hockey so there's been an increase of attendance there.

Other than that? We get trashed every other day. Let's just say that liquor stores get great business in the town. Some students drink from Thursday afternoon-Saturday night. Then there's St. Patrick's day...

I'm sorry, but you're wrong ;). Myles is the best pizza in town. For that matter its the best pizza in any town. This should be an indication of those good local pizza places I was talking about :)

Between Pisanello's, Myles, and Campus Polleye's, we've got a pretty good selection.

A pretty fair description of town.

BG is the seat of Wood county, and the center of what was called "The Great Black Swamp." It was named after Eleazor Wood, who designed Fort Meigs, which played a vital role in the war of 1812. The fort is located in Perrysburg, the former county seat, which is named after Commodore Oliver Hazzard Perry, who won the battle of Lake Erie against the British. It along with Fort Meigs hamstrung the British in the region during the war.

The county courthouse in BG was built just over 100 years ago, during one of the early oil booms in the U.S. J.P. Morgan actually had money in its construction. It is a stunning old building, still in operating in its original functions.

They started draining the swamp into rivers leading to Lake Erie during the 1830s. That has left the area with some of the best and most productive farm land in the country. More than 20% of microwave popcorn is grown in the county. Lots of soybeans. The NW part of the county has elements of the old Erie canal.

Around the 1830s a postal worker from Bowling Green, Kentucky moved here, and is thought to be from whom the city got its name. I think it was a sarcastic joke myself. BG, Kentucky has mountains, lots of trees, and a river that floods. BG, Ohio is flat, fewer trees, and at the time had standing water up to your knees. The old Dixie highway, Rt. 25 runs through town (Main Street.) Interstate 75 runs along the eastern half of the city, and borders Bowling Green State University.

The University itself was established in 1910 as a teacher training college. Its original administration started the groundwork for a full University from the start. It became a state college in 1928 and a full University in 1932. I could be off a few years on those numbers, but in either case, it was before our "rival" in Little Detroit was recognized as such.

Around 1962 an enrollment boom started, which leveled off around 16,000 by the 1970s. BGSU is the sister school of Kent State, which was created as part of the Lowery-Mooney act of 1910. It would likely be thought of as more conventional and conservative compared to its counterpart. This isn't to say the school as a conservative bastion like Dayton, rather its simply intended to convey a feel for things.

BGSU is a true liberal arts University, with a full range of offerings to students. It is a residential campus with over 6,500 student residents, out of an undergrad population of about 17,000. There are just over 2,500 grad students. We have a branch campus an hour east of us, with another 1,900 students. I'm actually rounding the numbers down a bit.

Athletics haven't been the main focus or source for entertainment at BGSU, but as noted, this too is changing.

The city has a much higher "middle/upper middle" class make-up. It has a classic downtown, full of excellent places to eat, shop, and sip coffee. The Mall isn't much to talk about, nor is much of the city with regard to shopping or eating. The schools are excellent and stable. You can live here all year and not feel overcome with the students. The students tend to live on the east side of the rail road tracks which run north-south. Almost all of the rest of the students live east of Main street.

It is a safe, sane, and friendly place to live and raise kids. Much of that character is mirrored on the campus itself. I have found the students to be friendlier than those at many schools on average. Being an alum, living in town comes with added perks like using the University Library, rec center, etc.

Other notes would be that BG has been empirically shown to be the windiest place in Ohio. Snow removal sucks. And as noted there isn't even a single mid-sized chain store or restaurant in the city. All of those are north in Perrysburg, or south in Findlay. BG was known as the Crystal City because of cheap oil which made the production of glass and crystal easy. Little Detroit, which was founded after Bowling Green, later gained that production due to having cheap water.

Yes I did just pull all of that out of my head. I was a history major in college. I am a retired campus tour guide. Yes I can say all of that while walking backwards.

NWLB - Great description...BG is a great place. I remember when I was making my decision on what school to go to back in 1985. I was leaning toward either Ohio State or Penn State until my last minute visit to BG. I absolutely fell in love with the place. It was just the right size for me. I love the small town feel and the BIG university taste. Like you guys said, the university and students rule the town. When schools out, BG's not a very happening area. But when the students are in it's just great.

Note: Myles has the best Pizza in town hands down!!

If I'm going out for pizza and beer, or to hang with friends, Myles wins hands down. If I'm getting it delivered, Pisanello's wins hands down. Either way, I much perfer Polleye's Breadsticks. They win hands down period.

Umm..as for stuff to do it town, yeah, party, drink, go to Toledo. Thats about it. But I still love it here.

Myles is the best.
We don't have chain restaurants because city council won't let them into town, because local owners are afraid of losing business. That's been a huge debate for years and it doesn't make sense.
Yes, one hill in our town was the leftovers from the University golf course.
But the other was the former site of water treatment plant (I believe, and not dirt from the hospital)

Really? Didn't know that. I just figured since its next to the hospital it must've been from when they dug the foundation. You could be perfectly right, as I really don't know for sure.

Either way that makes the total 2 hills in wood county :)

C'mon Dayons...of course the cheese slides off if you're not careful, there's an inch of it!

Pepperoni stacked 15 slices high, and piled with cheese on top of that. Combined with a great sauce that has a hit of spice? MMMmmmm. I do like Pisanello's, but Myle's is so good, I rarely go to Pisanello's anymore.

HEY! Do not mock the Bennigan's Monte Cristo! The Monte Cristo is not to be mocked!!!!!

I had heard we are getting a new Friendly's building in town, but I can't remember where they are building it. I'd eat there now, but the roach-hole it is in deters me.

My kingdom for a Perkins. One of my two cats for a Godfathers Pizza. My wife's cat for an Applebees. My wife's cat for free if that can't be done. How about an Eat'N Park, or a Cheddar's? A Ryan's Steakhouse maybe? I mean that's a pre-post football kind of place to eat.

Hey, while we are at it, what gives with that Ebony's place, do they bother staying open past 9 pm? They always seem closed.
