Urbie sneers at BG (again)
Urbie sneers at BG (again)
The coach who never misses an opportunity to remind everyone how he labored in obscurity in little ole' Bowling Green was at it again during the SEC Media Days. He got in a little dig at BG when asked about how the quarterback is used in the spread offense. He noted how he did similar things with Josh Harris at BG, but smirked that "it didn't quite gain the same publicity."
We get it, Urbie. You get more attention at Florida than you did at Bowling Green. That's not exactly a novel observation, but he still feels the need to talk down BG whenever the subject comes up.

I'm with Hammb... I think he's saying he was doing it at BG, it (obviously) worked, but no one really took notice. That's not a slam on BG, it's just how things are. Anytime someone drops BGSU in the national media is good! Any pub is good pub!hammb wrote:Doesn't sound like a smear of BG to me at all. More like a smear at the football media coverage for ignoring things until they happen at the likes of Florida, etc.
Whatever, I guess take it however you want.
Urban is a great supporter of BGSU athletics... this is a fact.

I said he sneered at BG, not smeared BG. I agree that it certainly wasn't anything smear-worthy, but did exhibit an unneccesary tone of condesencion that I didn't appreciate as someone who is proud of this university.hammb wrote:Doesn't sound like a smear of BG to me at all. I'm glad he supports the university financially and in other ways; IMO, it's the least he could do considering that BG gave him the platform from which to launch his career.

I am no big fan of Mrs. Meyer's husband but I read no snear and no smear towards BGSU. I think he told the truth. The major media does not pay much attention to the happenings at the smaller conference programs.

Let me try this again.
Taking the words by themselves off the page, one could interpret it as a fairly innocuous, even accurate, observation about college football media coverage. Hearing the words audibly coming from a person who has a consistent track record of talking down BG and essentially mocking our place in the college football food chain in comparison to where he presently finds himself and the veneer of innocence quickly vanishes.
An oversensitive interpretation? Perhaps. There have been so many past examples of condescension and sneering that it's becoming difficult to tell anymore. I've just rarely heard him reference BG without something negative (size, fans, talent) attatched to it as a means of comparison to Florida. Oh well.

Joe, this is the same guy who made a point to come back to BG last Summer and made the public observation that the Sebo Center is better than anything that he has available to him at Florida. I had the opportunity to see him - and "Mrs. Meyer" - there last year, and I don't think he looks down upon BG at all. You can read whatever you want to into his public statements ('tis your right), but I don't think Urban holds any contempt for BGSU based upon my direct experience with the man. "Mrs. Meyer" didn't seem all that perturbed, either.JoeFalcon wrote:Let me try this again.

That's actually my point! Did we not know that? Was it really necessary to point out? The fact he had to make a special point to mention what was already blindingly obvious is part of the reason I took it as a gratuitious dig. Anyway, learned elders of Falcon Nation have spoken and concluded that Urbie is absolved, and I begrudgingly respect their judgement and will cease and desist continued equine flogging.Ineedbotox wrote:Tebow just won the freaking Heisman. Obviously anything associated with Tebow and the offense at FL far surpasses anything Josh Harris ever did. Not a slam... just a fact.
Bleeding Orange: thanks for the story. If I hear a few more (thousand) of those I might change my opinion.

Ouch. I know it's true, but it definitely sucks to be referred to as an "elder"JoeFalcon wrote:That's actually my point! Did we not know that? Was it really necessary to point out?
