Commitments?

Post by Class of 61 »

Just happened to go onto the Rivals.com site...they're showing a total of NINE commits for the class of 2009, including some names I'd never heard mentioned as "possibles" before. So I went to Scout.com and they still show the same FOUR kids they've listed for awhile. We mentioned awhile back that there seems to be a "trend" if you will, for kids to commit earlier than before...obviously, these "verbals" are exactly that...though Rivals DOES list most of them as "solid verbals". Guess we'll see... a good season this year would tend to bring more talented kids into the fold...or at least I'd hope so.

I would assume guys offered by a Big ten team or a South Carolina or Stanford are not coming here...although that assumption and those offers are not necessarily accurate. Here are the 9 players I am guessing are the most likely to be added to the list of commitments...

QB 115 Devontae Payne 6-5 220 None Cleveland, OH 2
RB CB 207 Alan Freeman 5-9 185 Eastern Michigan Inkster, MI 2
WR 160 Jeff Walker 6-4 197 None Akron, OH 2
T 152 Kyle Bryant 6-7 280 4.9 None Detroit, MI 2
MLB 64 Dan Molls 6-1 215 Army, Ball St, CMU, EMU, Miami, OU Cleveland, OH 2
S 69 Shamari Benton 6-0 183 CMU Bloomfield, MI 2
S QB 106 Thomas Gordon 5-11 205 4.5 CMU, EMU, Toledo Detroit, MI 2
S RB NR Anthony Baskin 5-11 200 EMU South Lyon, MI 2

Much needed DBs

I have a question regarding stuff on scout and rivals. When it says interested in, does that mean the player is interested in those schools or the schools are interested in that player? Especially for young players before they can be offered. I would assume there are a lot of kids interested in Ohio St, Michigan, etc. and those schools might not be interested in them.

Not sure. I think it means that the school might have contacted them. I only listed the players we were definitely interested in as we offered them

It means that the kid is interested in the school. It is a way to get the attention of the school or coach.

You are right, there are a lot of kids interested in Ohio St, Michigan, etc. and those schools might not be interested in them at all. Kids can list who ever they want (Big Ten, Big East) but may never get any interest (ie letter, contact etc) from that school.

mark mays looks REALLY good, i like him already. i also like that he's already running out of the shotgun just like we do with those shotgun off tackles. a lot of running backs have a hard time adjusting to that system and have trouble picking the right hole or seeing it develop after running out of the standard i-form their whole life. case in point dan macon. macon was as natrually gifted as anybody but he never got good at seeing the play develop. at the spring game 2 years ago their were several of the alumni players that will go nameless saying things like, "macon been in the program for 5 years and still doesnt know how to run." i think mays has a leg up on the competition when he gets here because he had some very nice cutbacks and is used to the system of running already.

Agreed Mays showed good vision. I wonder about his speed.

Thomas showed good power although he seems to run upright. He has the size and athleticism to make a difference somewhere....RB-WR-LB-DE

also just because big conference schools are interested doesnt mean we won't get them. we got van johnson away from ol miss, and tj carswell away from clemson. it all depends on the player. do they want to go to a big time school and sit for a couple years before even getting a sniff of the field at a big time program or do they want to come in right away and have a chance to play like tj carswell did. even though van didnt turn out very well at bg he was pretty highly recruited in high school.

It certainly makes it much less likely that we will get them
