Antonio Gates

Another great MAC bball player is Antonio Gates from Kent State. He could have played in the NBA but we choose another career move. Playing football, as a walk-on mind you, for the San Diego Chargers. Only broke the TE record for most catches, and TD in a year. Only 1 TD behind Owens.

Not bad for not playing football since his sophmore year in HS

Yeah, I love Gates. I drafted him before this season when I thought he was going to be good. But I didn't or anyone else for that matter, think that he'd have this kind of a season. He is one hell of an athlete and has kept my fanatsy team alive with his performance.

Last year sometime I was watching ESPN Classic and they had a McDonald's All Star Game on and Gates was in it.

Announcers commented on his good play and said he was going to Tom Izzo's Mich. State team on scholarship and planned to walk on the football team. Guess it didn't work out and he ended up at Kent.

Great story and an exciting player to watch. I think he would have been a bit short for the NBA though.

Perfect size for a tight end though.

Yep. He was a guy who was never going to play in the NBA. He was too stocky for guard, and too short for forward. But in the NFL he's the ideal fit for a TE.

I think that Anthony Stacey would've fit this mold too, had he thought about pursuing a career in football.
