More trouble at Toledo ... this is scary stuff, because I feel like it could happen anywhere, at any time.

Pretty much same old trouble I think-its just been on the back burner. My guess is some more names that everyone already knows come out officially and that hoops was the real target all along since its much easier to influence outcomes in that sport. Perhaps a prominent football player was pressured early and acted as a witness rather than take a fall himself?

I don't think anyone could not notice how quickly Sammy went from a great shooter to a terrible one. It never really made much sense. Now maybe it does.

Funny you should say that. The one thing from The Blade's story that stood out to me was Joplin's quotes about how they had no idea what happened to Villegas's shooting the last two years he was there.

http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dl ... /167375353

"Former UT coach Stan Joplin did not return a phone message seeking comment last night. But in late January, 2006, Coach Joplin told The Blade, “I just can’t explain what has happened to Sammy. ... It’s killing us because he gets a lot of open shots. He’s not making them and it affects the rest of his game.

“This has been going on now for almost two years. He can’t figure out the problem, and I can’t figure it out. I’m not pointing the finger solely at Sammy because none of our upperclassmen are consistently playing all that well. But if he makes just one or two more shots every night we’re probably winning some close games instead of losing them,” Coach Joplin said at the time."

And for those that don't want to dig up the details of the game in question...

UT was a 15.5 point favorite over Central Michigan. UT's up 16 when Villegas is fouled with 27 seconds remaining. He misses both free throws. But Central missed two field goal attempts and UT still won be 16.

Here's Sussman writing a little bit more about it.

A couple of interesting names are brought up here...

That was Sammie's problem- he couldn't even screw up correctly.

He should have fouled someone at the other end.

Update from the blade today. The interesting thing I did not find in this article was the usual attorney "my client is innocent" line. This could get ugly for UT real fast!

The reference to an as yet unnamed and uncharged accomplice, and the prosecutors' caginess about the plea already entered leaves me wondering what other threads are being tied on this. On an unrelated note, did investigators just drop Scooter's case, or is his music sheet unfinished?

Does Toledo face automatic NCAA sanctions in the event of successful prosecution against a player? Or, does NCAA intervention depend on establishing that institutional controls fell short of NCAA standards/reasonable diligence?

The AP is reporting that according to the NCAA, the Sammy V and Scooter McDougle cases are related, despite what the UofT has claimed.

TOLEDO, OHIO (AP) -- The FBI says point-shaving allegations against a former University of Toledo basketball player are related to gambling charges filed last year against a former Toledo football player.

Sammy Villegas, a guard who finished his college career in 2006, is accused of shaving points in games during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. The allegations by federal prosecutors became known last week.

Documents about the allegations were filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Running back Harvey "Scooter" McDougle Junior was charged in April 2007 with participating in a bribery scheme to influence sporting contests. Those charges were later dropped, but the investigation continued.

A university spokesman last week described the cases as isolated.
