Steve Sanders Looking Good

This from today's practice report on Brown's Scout.com site...

"- WR Steve Sanders lined-up as the #3 receiver with the starting offense on numerous occasions in drills today. Sanders is viewed a larger wide receiver and could fit well into the mold of a possession receiver. After gaining some momentum is practice sessions last week, and faring adequately in the pre-season opener, Sanders is getting more meaningful reps. "

My FIL got us tickets to the Bears/Browns preseason game on 8/28. Will be great to get a look at Pope and Sanders on the same night.

The prognosis on Joe Jurevicius is not very good at this point, and that could very well open up a spot for Sanders.

Edwards & Stallworth are the gems of that WR corps. Every indication is that Travis Wilson has really stepped up and is probably a lock to make the team. Cribbs is obviously a lock for his special teams abilities as well. That leaves one spot up for grabs, if Jurevicius cannot come back. Right now it looks as though Sanders is in the lead for that 5th spot.

Of course the way Wilson has been up & down the past 2 years it is not completely out of question that Sanders could pass him either. It sounds as though he definitely practiced ahead of Wilson yesterday...let's hope he makes some noise, I'd love to see him suit up for the Browns on Sundays.

I like Sanders a lot, but I think Wilson and probably Hubbard have a step up on him because the Browns used draft picks on them. I also thought Wilson looked a bit better in the first preseason game. And Hubbard had a great catch. Kevin Kasper could also make the squad. Unfortunately for Sanders this is probably the deepest Browns receiving corps since the days of Webster Slaughter, Brian Brennan and Reggie Langhorne.

Wouldn't Cribbs count as a KR/PR/ST player and not a WR?

That's his primary role, but when you're paring down the final 53 that PR/KR guy has to take the spot of some other position player. In Cribbs case he's also a WR. He will likely be the 4th WR on this team no matter who ends up at the 3 spot.

The team has a lot of plays that are specifically designed to make use of Cribbs's talent...options, shovel passes, end arounds, pass plays, etc.

The Browns really want Cribbs to be able to be a fourth WR so they can use a spot on another position like another CB or lineman. I think two of the Wilson, Hubbard, Kasper, Sanders, Steptoe group will make it. Cuz JJ will come back later in the year, and Cribbs is there too.

That said, Sanders is probably not going to make it.

I couldn't find anything about Sharon.

But also, Braylon Edwards is going to miss some time, so that could lead to more chances for that group of receivers to compete, including Sanders.

I really hope Steve can grab a spot on this roster...we all know he's got the hands and his height has got to be an advantage as well. Here's to a good preseason the rest of the way for Sanders!

I have no doubt that SS has the ability to play somewhere in the NFL. It'd be awesome if it were with the Browns! I already have plans to attend the Nov. 30 Colts game!

More on Steve from today's practice by Scout.com...

Edwards Spot: Several receivers rotated in place of WR Braylon Edwards with the starting unit, including WR Steve Sanders, WR Syndric Steptoe and WR Travis Wilson. Edwards is out for a week or more after receiving stitches after he was stepped on in practice while not wearing shoes.

“Braylon’s at home resting,” Romeo Crennel said. “I’m not worried about him. There’s no concern about when we get him back. He’s a Pro Bowl player and when he’s ready, we’ll put him out there.”

Sanders received several rotations as the starter and Crennel said he’s coming along.

“He’s an extremely hard worker,” he said. “The fact he plays multiple positions helps him as well.”

Dude is a ridiculously hard worker and I hope that he can show Romeo and the rest of the coaching staff what they want to see. I do have to say though, Travis Wilson has gotten the shaft ever since he came to this team and I kind of feel bad for him. But hey, coaches do things for a reason and Steve is doing what he can to make this team! I wish him all the best and can't wait to see him on the field in the regular season!
