? about BG secondary

Post by Pete Segaard »

It sounds like Pitt's QB had some accuracy issues. how does it appear the BG secondary will perform with a more accurate QB? Will BG be able run more blitz's against a spread O or will "only" Briggs and Dozier be applying the pressure? By the way, GO BG. Can't wait for Minny!

Really tough to say. Pitt knows their WRs & QB are suspect and they almost refused to go downfield. They did have some WRs beat our guys deep on a couple occasions, but on those times the QB either hung the ball up allowing the defender to get back into the play or he threw it out of bounds and uncatchable.

That said, it's tough to judge on TV. It's quite possible Pitt wasn't going deep simply because the coverage downfield was lights out all day...I'll defer to somebody at the game for commenting on that.

I do know that I'm pretty comfortable with our safeties. Jahmal Brown might be the best tackling safety I've seen at BG...he was lights out yesterday on some darn good Pitt RBs. What's not to love about PJ Mahone? Just a fantastic ball hawk in coverage. Lewis & Smith have been starting seemingly forever, so they're pretty well versed in the college game as well...in year's past they've been burned by gambling, but still they're a solid pair of corners.

It's always tough to say how things will look when you get into games against spread offenses, but I'm comfortable saying this starting 4 in the secondary is as good as you'll ever find in the MAC. I've bemoaned our front 7 for years, but it's quite possible that the great play of that back 4 will allow us to take gambles and overcome any weaknesses we might have up front. Early returns were good as Pitt was not able to handle our blitzing.

It tough to say. I saw some drops by their wide receivers yesterday as well on some very catchable balls. But, I didn't see too many wide open recievers either. Our DBs seemed to be staying with them for the most part.

I think Minny learned some things playing us last year. Remember they came in with a inexperienced QB last year and really ran a conservative offense until the second half when they started to open it up. I saw them do the same thing last night against Northern Illinois and almost get beat. They didn't open it up until they got behind and needed to score quickly.

Weber is better QB than what we saw yesterday. He can make some throws if he is given time. I would expect Minny to come out with a more open offense this year.
