Well with the Barry Bonds steriod announcement and Urban going to Florida, details on the UNLV coaching search aren't quite lead story material today. Listen for the local updates from Norm Wamer that come on after the 20 after and 40 after SportCenter updates.bgsufan1972 wrote:Too bad Brandon was at the game last night and I am listening to Dan Patrick now on ESPN 1470. 1470 has the UNLV announcer, Dave McCann, sports director at KLAS, live on the air right now. He says Sanford is still the # 1 candidate but Meyer going to Florida might be an issue. Brandon came to town last night and interviewed today. He is the only Div I coach they interviewed, all others have been coordinators. Three have had two interviews, and Brandon has had one. Robinson was getting $500,000 to $600,000 per year. Previous coach wasn't getting that much. Salary might be around $400,000. The UNLV AD denied that Brandon was coming. They ended up calling the Mandalay Bay and found his reservation there. Then he switched hotels and the whole thing was being very secretive. McCann thinks Brandon was doing that so us back in BG wouldn't find out about it. And he said it was a very late arrival, so yes he could have been at a game here last night.

If I thought any of BG's bright young alumni types were ripe for coming back here, I'd agree. Most of BG's bright young alumni have ambition that doesn't leave them living here the rest of their lives. I think it is a pain having to live on the edge like this, but I wouldn't trade the last four years of results, for a slow crawl towards where we are, that lasts ten years.
I just hope and trust the brain trust that found Urban in the first place, is keeping their powder dry. I'd like BG to be able to move quickly to replace Brandon if it comes to that. My view is the same as it has been since Urban arrived.
BG is in better shape for having had its current coach. It will make getting another coach easier. It is even easier now than when Urban left, because BG has already had one change with no drop-off. The system really isn't alien or unique. The key is finding somebody able to manage it.
Much of that relies on the overall staff, not one person. I think people worry about finding the next "big personality" not the best program manager. BGSU has become the personality, and it needed Urban to get that. Brandon is a great coach, but obviously not the "personality" Meyer was.
Finding somebody that knows how to get the job done won't be as high risk as finding Urban in the first place, or carrying over to Brandon. Krebs and Seeliger got it right the last time, and the choice wasn't somebody most folks had heard of before. Plus the fact that this is a great program now, will attract a lot more talent we might not have asked about before.

You beat me to it. Sweet work, Krebs.orangeandbrown wrote:Shows we learned something from the last time!Warthog wrote:The Sun reports that a major sticking point will be the $500,000 buyout in Brandon's current contract.
HELP A BROTHER OUT AND PASS THE HAT!!!!
Here's our one shining moment right in front us . . . According to 1470 the one sticking point MAY be a $500,000 out clause in the contract. If this guy has enough class to get on a damn plane the night before he honors the seniors at their banquet after talking about all they have done for BG football, the least we can do is pass the hat and help Brandon out with the $500,000.
Just watch, now he'll come back to BG for the banquet and quell everyone's "fears" that he's not going anywhere. At least Urban had enough class to actually honor the seniors and not piss all over their parade.
Apparently, UNLV must not have many "big" games on their schedules. And here's to hoping that the staff that doesn't end up in Gainsville or Kalamazoo goes to to Vegas with him.
The coach that can lead us to the next level and continue our "program" building is not on this staff.

If someone would give us $500,000 to take Brandon I'd laugh my butt to the bank. I don't think Brandon is fire-worthy, and would never advocate his firing, but at the same time I see a whole lotta John Cooper in him. I think we can do better, and that $500,000 buyout would pay our next coach for his next 2 years' salary.
You are possibly correct. Didn't Brandon just give the "I don't have a dream" speech a couple of weeks ago? I thought somebody said he had assured the world he wasn't looking at other jobs out west. Not that I take those things seriously anymore.

Of course we shouldn't take them seriously. Money talks my friend. I thought we learned this two years ago at this time.NWLB wrote:You are possibly correct. He's on staff, but he isn't a coach.OptionQB wrote:The coach that can lead us to the next level and continue our "program" building is not on this staff.
He's Paul Krebs.
Re: HELP A BROTHER OUT AND PASS THE HAT!!!!
Agreed. There are many things that you may say about Krebs that I've heard about him, but I know a couple things:Schadenfreude wrote: He's Paul Krebs.
1) Urban was the right and needed hire: see his success
2) Paluch was the perfect hire for the hockey program
3) I agreed 100% with the Dakich re-hire. Doubtful we would've found better.
4) Brandon MAY have been the correct hire to keep the Meyer momentum rolling.
I trust Krebs to hire another coach. He's done a good job so far finding the right coach for the right time, IMO.
I didn't say I believed it. I was more amused at how clumsy it is that he said it, then goes to interview. At least do what others do, say you listen because its healthy to know what you are worth, etc. But don't jerk chains by saying one thing, then doing another.rc_ziggy84 wrote:Of course we shouldn't take them seriously. In any case, I'll be content if he comes back and is around for a couple more years.
The rest of the comments are also on the money. We'll do just fine. Lets not forget there were some other minds behind getting Urban as well though.
But the credit does go to Krebs, the entire show and stage is on his watch.
Plus I like night football and fancy scoreboards.
....but about that basketball arena....

I think the university (Mr Krebs) learned something ($500,000) by the way Meyers left, but I am very disappointed that Brandon did NOT learn a thing on how you do things correctly. Even Urban was upfront with Utah this time (I think he learned from leaving here), but apparently Brandon learned NOTHING. I just lost alot of respect for him.
VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!!! Iwouldn't want to be him at the banquet!!!
