John Headwards

I'm watching the Pacers-Kings game on ESPN and John friggin Edwards just got in the game. I swear his head has gotten even bigger since he left the MAC...It is pretty funny watching his teammates ignore him on the offensive end though. I guess he should mail Ron Artest a thank you letter for giving him his shot.

Ugh. All the Edwards bashing, over and over again. The fact is, and I'm hoping someone who doesn't have their BG goggles on can back me up, is that I saw a guy who, as an underclassmen languished on the bench at KSU and made a fool out of himself when he did enter turn into a solid guy who KILLED BG when they played in his final season there. The guy developed low post moves with both hands, and could flat out finish around the hoop.

His quickness and ability to defend also surprised me; what didn't surprise me is that he got a shot. 7 footer who could finish around the basket and play some defense?

I'll take him on my team.

If you would have told me that Edwards would play a minute in the NBA when he was a freshman I would have laughed in your face and questioned your ancestry. It just goes to show you what hard work, perseverance and talent can do.

I'll back you up on that! Edwards deserves a TON of credit to go from a completely unaccomplished high school player to being in the NBA. Consider for a moment the legions of guys unloading trucks and pushing lawnmowers that have more talent than Edwards. As a fan of MAC basketball, I'm proud of him. Edwards stands in very stark contrast to our very own Kevin Netter, as physically gifted as any MAC player that I've seen in 15 years, who's basketball career may be already over.

I think Edwards is a no talent hack that just is big. However, lucky for him, that sort of thing works in the NBA. I do applaud him for working his butt off to go from a nobody in HS to playing in the NBA. I wish him the best, as I do all MAC players, he got some decent minutes in last night's game.

I also agree that there was a tremendous improvement in him from year 1 to year 4, however, I do question one part of your comments. Odd as it may seem Edwards was one guy that Netter usually matched up pretty well against. Edwards tore up the MAC pretty good his Senior year, but he never really dominated against BG.

His stats vs BG:

MAC Tourney game 3/11/04
3-8 shooting, 11 total points, 11 rebounds.

@ KSU 2/14/04
4-9 shooting, 9 total points, 5 rebounds

@ BG 1/28/04
5-14 shooting, 14 total points, 4 rebounds

Edwards didn't play major minutes until his senior year, so those are the only games he really played much. Of course he was 3-0 against us in those games, so that CERTAINLY counts for something special. Just thought I'd point out that while he had a very good senior season, he didn't really dominate Netter in the middle, for whatever reason.

I do agree that if Netter had his work ethic he'd be the one in the NBA today. Kevin has to see John on TV and really start hitting himself in the head, I would think.
