I hate the wave too, but in the band's defense:
1) The one's in the band starting the wave are the minority...and generally the ones that couldn't tell you the difference between a Punt, Pass or Kick! If the wave has become a band-wide thing, I will be deeply saddened!
2) The band is usually preoccupied during time outs.....PLAYING! Or at least they should be!!
Just a couple thoughts from an ex-MAGGOT!

I enjoyed seeing the thunder sticks in the student section although I "also" doubt they have much effect in our open ended stadium. It would be nice to hear what the players think on this issue as to whether they thought the sticks were effective.
I did not like that my 6yr old and his cousin (also 6) had thunder sticks, and those sitting around us were noticably unhappy as well. 1 week later; I'm still kicking those damn things around the living room.
I guess I prefer yelling at the top of my lungs; I say can the sticks and go for more eye-popping, hypnotizing Orange.

I openly protest doing the wave. Our Drum Major loves it though, and absolutely no offense to him, but he falls squarely into category one.
The wave died before I was even born
Yeah right girl!

As someone who works for the stadium grounds crew, if i ever see another thunderstick promotion, i might strangle someone.
I am also constantly annoyed by the fact that thundersticks seem to be the anti-rhythm. No matter what the song/chant/etc. is, by 5 seconds in, it's going 100 miles per hour and sounds like a jumble of noise.
I like the extra noise, and if it gets people involved and making sound who would normally not be contributing anything, that's a positive, but I've had just about enough of thundersticks.

You want anti-rhythm? Try being on the field during Pre-game and listen to the crowdPeregrinner wrote: I am also constantly annoyed by the fact that thundersticks seem to be the anti-rhythm.
