Danielson was actually the backup to a guy named Bob Borkowsky, I believe, but Gary still played alot.

Thanks for the info. I knew Phipps and Griese had definitely graduated by then.

LOL! When I first saw the title of this thread beginning with "36 years ago," I thought it was a typo and thought it should say "40 years ago" because my first though was that it was a thead about men's hoops accidentially placed in the football forum talking the last time BG men's hoops went to the big dance.

Hence, the reason I left out the word "today." I was being facetious there, "Einstein." :smt023

It was Bob Borowski, from Cleveland St. Joe's HS ...and they had a star running back, whose name escapes me now, who had a successful NFL career. They were also Pre season favorites to win the Big 10 that year.

Checking the Purdue website they had 3 first round picks in the draft following that season: DT Dave Butz(5), RB Otis Armstrong(9), and WR Darryl Stingley(19). They also had 2 players taken in the 2nd round of that draft as well.

Armstrong is the guy I was thinking of...just couldn't recall the name...It was the FIRST time BG had ever played, much less beaten a Big 10 team...and it stuck with me especially since 4 of my friends and I drove to the game and back, round trip taking about 26 HOURS total time (including the game, victory celebration and dinner afterwards etc.). We were jammed in my little Plymouth Valiant and NONE of us was exactly "small" if you get my drift.

But if was the beginning of many similar trips to Syracuse, Annapolis, Kentucky, Penn.St., Mich.St. etc. And we learned to stay OVERNITE rather than try to make it all in one day.

Thanks for the spelling correction...................35+ years has clouded my ability to spell!! He was the running (option) QB and Danielson was the passer if I remember correctly.

Danielson had been the Purdue starter the year before and had either led the Big 10 in passing, or was the league's top returning passer, I forget which. But Purdue's new coach, Alex Agase, wanted to run the Wishbone, which was the hot offense at the time. He benched Danielson in favor of the other QB, just a week for so before the opener. Darryl Stingley, who had been used largely as a wide out or flanker back the year before became a wing-back in the Wishbone -- which probably wasn't a good use of his talents.
Otis Armstrong did rip off a long touchdown run on a triple option pitch, but Purdue also had a lot of trouble with pitches and handoffs. I'm pretty sure we recovered a fumble deep in their territory to set up our first score and the ball was on the ground several other times.
They did put Danielson in late in the game. He completed a couple of passes to move the ball down the field, but an interception (maybe by Tony Bell?) ended the drive and sealed the win.
Ironically, the next week, Agase put Danielson back in as the starter against a good Washignton team (with QB Sonny Sixkiller). Danielson -- the passing quarterback -- ran for over 200 yards in a high-scoring loss to the Huskies. I remember watching that game with a couple of other guys who I'd gone to the BG-Purdue game with and all of us making comments like, "And this was the guy who couldn't run the ball??
One kind of odd thing I remember about the game was that Dave Butz seemed huge. He went like 6-foot-7, 295, and after the game, he stood out at midfield talking with some of our linemen who had played across from him and they looked like Pop Warner age players next to him.
