I think someone is smoking crack if they think UNLV is offering Brandon $600,000 a year. John Robinson was only making about $500,000 this year and that was a lot for a UNLV football coach. All reports I have seen said they expect the new coach to get between $300,000 and $400,000.

On the other hand, if the crack smoker is correct, Brandon would be a fool to stay in BG for that kind of a raise at basically the same type program.

He told this to the team... but didn't say he was taking it?

What does this mean? That he isn't sure if he wants it?

Has he laid out a time table for making a decision?

Incidentally, I know The Blade stated pretty flatly that the Nevada-Las Vegas job would pay $600,000.

But that's what John Robinson made. He was a big name kind of guy... won several titles and a (mythical) national championship at Southern California.

I'm not sure we can assume the next coach would be paid the same amount.

UNLV was willing to offer up to $700,000

Post by RebelRobert »

UNLV was willing to offer a new coach a package between $600,000 to $700,000 and this comes from several reports out of Las Vegas Newspapers that I have linked below.

Brandon must be the best interviewee in the world because none of these articles list him as a potential candidate, but he goes in for an interview and gets an offer the next day?? He must have showed them a tape of the UT game and sold them on his coaching ability.

UNLV keeping things quiet

Post by RebelRobert »

The UNLV Athletic Director has been keeping this coaching search very quiet after he had a huge disaster happen with our last Basketball coaching search (Lon Kruger vs. George Karl).

Gregg Brandon was mentioned as a candidate by the Las Vegas Review Journal the 1st day that John Robinson retired (in September). Brandon said it was not the right time to comment.

UNLV would love to get a coach with Division IA experience.

Hopefully UNLV will land Gregg Brandon as our new coach! :D

Also, the Utah OC might have been the first choice, but he may be the Utah HC, so it opened up again quickly.

If RebelRobert isn't just some guy in his pajamas and Gregg Brandon does leave, let's wish him "good luck" and try not to post a lot of stuff that makes us sound like whiny chicks who have just been dumped.

Gregg Brandon has a great offensive mind. He is a good, but not great, head coach. If he accepts the offer (his comment to the players was that he doesn't know what will happen) there will not be much handwringing.
He can easily be replaced.

Coach Brandon has won a lot of games with players not only recruited by Urban Meyer, but who believed in Meyer's system. Coach Brandon wants to be a "players" coach and that has caused problems with discipline and motivation. Urban Meyer told his players "I don't need any 18 or 19 year old friends, I have friends". There is no such thing as a "players" coach. These kid's need dedicated, professional, coaches.

Coach Brandon is unproven, but if UNLV wants him, and he can command that kind of salary, God bless him and his family, and I thank him for his efforts at BGSU.

2005 will be a great year for BG. It will be Omar's last (he will be drafted) and a lot of things are in place. I thought Coach Brandon would stay one more year to benefit from that, and I didn't think his stock (given the performance against NIU and the collapse at Toledo) would be that high this year. (the 3rd qtr against Toledo was as much his fault as Coach Beckman's).

The D 1 landscape is changing. Follow the money.

So first he told his players he accepted the offer, now it's "if he accepts the offer" and he told the players he doesn't know what will happen.

Your credibility just sank below the level of my old socks.

And the only way Omar tests the NFL draft waters after next year, I think, is if he does what he did this year and more, AND the team makes a run at the BCS. Even that might not be enough. He's got the tools, but we all thought Josh was 3rd or 4th round material, even and, regardless of his potential or what he might do in the future, he's on a practice squad. No way you take that risk if you're forfeiting a year of eligibility.

If they can't come up with an extra $500,000 in Vegas, the only other place that could easily do it would be the U.S. Govt. Pile up that debt!

You may want to re-read the original post TG 1996. It clearly says Coach Brandon said he was offered the job, not that he accepted it.
