BRANDON STAYING AT BGSU!!

Post by ZiggyZoomba »

Bowling Green State University football Gregg Brandon will not be a candidate for the coaching vacancy at UNLV.

"I am flattered by their interest but feel it is best for my family and myself to remain as the head football coach at BGSU," said Brandon. "We have a great opportunity to play in an outstanding bowl game and I want all my energies focused on preparing my team for that challenge."

Let me be the first to take my foot out of my mouth....only Coach Brandon knows what the final decision came down to, but I am shocked that he turned down that type of money.

Interesting... I'm sure we'll hear both sides of the optimism/pessimism fence on this one, and frankly, after sitting through a day of "what will we do without him?" I can see both sides.

With him staying, we have an opportunity to keep building on what we've done in the past four years, and going into Wisconsin without the added questions of "what can a new coach do?" (of course, the answer to some on this board is "hopefully win a big game on the road" ZZZZING!)

However, if we stay on this track, his name is going to be mentioned more and more, and it will be inevitable that some day he will find an offer that suits him, and we'll be forced to find a new coach anyway. Is it better to have to search for a coach now? Or potentially a year for now in the same "getting ready for a bowl game" scenario?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah yeah yeah... who cares about all that. I'm just proud of the fact that this is the first place you can find this information!! ;-) The Internet rules!!

I'm sorry, I should have patted you on the back before I got long-winded.

Don't you have a goat to milk or something?

I'm surprised to say the least. Although some people have questions about Brandon's coaching at times, few can now question his loyalty and integrity. To turn down that money to stay and coach his team in their bowl game and beyond instead of running away in the middle of the night *ahem*, speaks to him as a man. Someday I think he will get an excellent offer from a bigger school for more money that he just can't refuse. But I doubt he will lie to us about it. Kudos to you coach brandon, and good luck in being the best you can be, now and in the future, whatever that means for the falcons. With this behind us...BEAT THE TIGERS!!!!

I'll believe it for sure if he is still here in 2 weeks. If he pulls an Urban, I'm gonna be a very upset Falcon!

Wow..this is a first. Normally MAC coaches stay because they get passed over, not because they don't wish to leave (yet). Obviously, I thinkl this will play out much more positively tnhan if he had pulled a Darnell and actively campaigned for a job he didn't get.

Let me be the turd in the punchbowl. Read the quote from Brandon again. He does not mention next season at all. Only talks about the bowl game this year. Just thought I would point out that he still leaves the door wide open for him to look around after the bowl game. Hope I am wrong about this, but I am just trying to be cautious before celebrating too much.

Good question. Seems to me that their is a higher than normal number of openings right now so I would say that this would not be the right time to be looking for a coach. Maybe next year (if Brandon would leave then) there won't be as many openings so we would have a better choice of available candidtates.

I thought the same thing, but was going to wait until more reports came out about it (or Grant to give up more information!) to see what the full context of the quote was.

I'll still let you be the turd in the punchbowl, though.

He did say "remain at Bowling Green." I'd echo all the other things. I am pleasantly surprised. I'm fine with him staying as long as it works for him. Sooner or later he will leave, and I am confident our AD can keep the program moving forward into the future.

It almost sounds planned. Regardless, I have a hard time believing this is the right time and UNLV is the right place. He spends another year, works on the motivational skills, solidifies some assist. coaches, and gains more clout in the market. He might still go, but only to the right place. When the kids are getting older, it ain't all about the money.

Next year could be a great year!

I saw on the other thread that UNLV and Utah boards are reporting that Utah OC Sanford is going to UNLV. If so, they might have given Brandon the chance to decline first.
