The Utah board seems to think that Brandon said "no" before they offered Sanford. If Sanford turned down the Utes for UNLV, what does that say about Utah? Does thier OC think they're a mirage?

And that has been asserted here, too.

I would love to know whether or not Brandon actually turned down Nevada-Las Vegas -- or whether he just withdrew his name for consideration right about the time UNLV was looking Sanford's way, anyway.

The latter scenario wouldn't be unprecedented.

It sounds like the Rebs were waving quite a bit of money around... to actually turn it down would suggest they have some real problems out there... or maybe their AD can't hold a candle to ours :)

I don't think many AD's can hold a candle to ours really. We all talk about how long we are going to keep Brandon for, but we never talk about Krebs like that. He has quite an impressive resume with the work he has done here and his fund raising for the Shot ($100 MILLION?!?!) when he was an assistant at OSU.

Given some of the issues at tOSU, Krebs would appear to be in a great position to fill the role there if heads begin to roll.

The Blade is carrying the Brandon statement, and says the Sanford story is in the Vegas papers this morning.

I'm really wondering if that translates to "I didn't get the job"

I know it's been reported he was offered the job, but maybe something happened that changed UNLV's mind, and wasn't actually Brandon turning it down.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope he truly didn't want to leave what he's got here. If that's the case, my respect for him went up 1000%.

The whole situation worried me, because I knew that because he interviewed, he would either take the job, or be denied. And if he were denied, and Brandon had to come back to BG, I don't think the players' and staffs' morale would be any better than it would be if he took the job.

It would be like he "cheated" on us.

I'm not sold on the idea that he "turned down" the job, but rather UNLV officials told him hey we have two guys here who don't have $500,000 buyouts, so why should we pick you?

I think this is a lot more about contract buyouts than loyalty. I will be one of the firsts to use the loyalty tag when 1) Mike Sanford is named head coach at UNLV and 2) Urban Meyer names someone not named Gregg Brandon as the Offensive Coordinator at Florida since it's apparent that he'll need one if Sanford is leading the charge at UNLV.

Think about it, who better to explain the offense to Chris Leak than the guy who is given credit with designing it?

As far as the UNLV AD

Post by madtiger »

He used to be at ECU....I think that he was the one that kind of led the Pirate resurgence in FB...I think that UNLV has just got to be a tough gig to win at...asnd remember there's the legend factor...He's got to follow John Robinson. Your coach was smart to stay put...BG has a lot more potential than the Runnin Rebels...

Coach Brandon did say he was offered the job...unless he comments no one will ever know if it fell through or he turned it down.

As I previously said, Brandon is a good coach, but not a great coach. If he runs the table next year, which I believe is possible, he will have proven himself. For that to happen he needs to not only be a teacher, but a motivator. He DOES NOT get these kids fired up.

Here is the full text of his speach to the team before the Toledo game;
" ". He did make some players change their shoes because they weren't Reeboks, but they were so taped up you couldn't tell what brand they were. Before the Toledo game, who cares?

My question is does Beckman stay? Again, a great defensive mind, but not a great game coach. If he stays (I'm not saying he's going anyplace) he needs to change more than personnel. We have good and some great athletes on defense.

I think these coachs are capable of getting BG to the next level (a MAC Championship). I just think they have to change how the approach some things.

As expected, ths spin from Vegas is that Sanford was their first choice. Some of the chatter on their board says it came down to Sanford and Brandon in that order. Again, you would assume that the people close to that program would spin things to make it appear that they got thier man.

The people who appear to be close to the Utah program on their boards say Brandon was UNLV's first offer and Sanford was thier second choice.
Since Sanford was supposed to be the top choice in Utah, it's not too suprising that the folks out there might want to take a shot at him.

Ultimately, it doesn't really matter. We have a bowl game coming up, the coaching staff that brought them to that dance wil be the staff getting them ready. It should be a very good match up and a chance to close out a somewhat bittersweet year on a high note.

Beyond that, the pieces are definately in place for a very big year in 2005...

Krebs is one of the best AD's in America.....period. This guy know his stuff and when Coach Brandon decides to make a move, I'm extremely confident in Krebs' ability to land a top notch coach.

Let me say I am very pleased Coach Brandon is staying. Only a few folks know the real answers to what was discussed and all....Keeping this staff intact will be hard...Beckman has had some solid defenses here in his 7 years...but the last two units were decent, but not great. They weren't at championship level.

Coach Stud? I think he loves BG and will be here. All the other coaches? hard to say. We'll have to see what happens.

2005 is the year we must get the job done. If we stay in the West, we get NIU and UT on our turf. Road games at Wisky and Boise State will be as difficult as any. No 1-AA's on the sked. If Brandon can run the table (or go no less than 9-2) next yr and win the MAC, he'll get much better offers than what UNLV could offer.

It's that nature of the business....I just want a coach that wants to be at BGSU...period. With the Sebo Center coming and all the progress the program is making, BGSU is a very attractive college football program.

On to Mobile!!!

I read that the Gators already have a hot-shot OC that Urban may be able to keep, since his own OC is going to UNLV. Time will tell. I doubt, however, Coach Brandon drops out of head coaching.

I hate to be the one to say it, but we're failing to see here is that while Brandon may have turned down the UNLV and also may have just flat out not gotten the job.. he says he's only focusing on the bowl game and getting his team prepared for that... by that quote, he doesn't rule out any other opportunities that may present themselves this winter (after the bowl game).. but at least for now.. it looks like we can get ready for the season we're all waiting for next year..

Hopefully Temple will stay at D1-A next year or at least have a football team! Wouldn't that be a disaster? We would have no choice but to schedule a D1-AA team to replace them...unless we could somehow manage to hook-up with one of their screwed OOC oppoents.
