With this all said I might be back next week for the Miami game, having a Girlfriend who attended Miami as an undergrad.

Like I have said before. This is my connection with BG. Without this board I have no idea who I would be a fan of but 5 years gone from school and no real tv coverage in columbus, my fanaticism would have dwindled and I likely would at best be a fair weather fan.

I blame lack of creative marketing. For that.

As for the ties to BG. I loved my time there but I am not certain (and I am at fault here too, my majors and aspirations were a major part of this) the school really did much to prepare me for a job outside of its doors. My success there has lead to amazing opportunities in education that I went elsewhere to take part in. When I say I went to BG it is looked at negatively very often which at first is annoying, then frustrating but has likely gradually worn down my pride in going there. While there I brought people to visit many times and even tried to coerce some people to go there. They usually found the campus unspectacular and many of those people said they would never even consider BG and chose Dayton, OSU, Miami or OU. Miami is the only other school I applied to and although accepted I chose BG. I had great experiences there and certainly dont regret having gone there. And I really don't care what these people said or thought that much, but it certainly wears me down. The reinforcement for the pride in the school is limited by the fact that i am now at another school and have lost touch with all but one of my college friends (another strange personal dynamic).

I certainly loved BG, and when asked today at the admissions office I work at OSU who my favorite football team is it is still BG, however its just more practical for me to have OSU season tickets for football and basketball.

Sorry for the tangent....just doing a little out loud free thinking on the subject....

I'm definitely disappointed to not be heading back for homecoming this year. 10 years ago this weekend my wife and I went on our first date (which included the game). Homecoming is one of the few times that I see many of my friends at the games. This will be the first year in many that I haven't even made one game. But a 260 mile drive with gas prices what they are, 3 kids and a 6mo pregnant wife just aren't for making a good trip. On top of that I can see a light at the end of a tunnel and the finishing of my dissertation, so there are few weekends I'm not in the lab.

Maybe it helped that I spent 3 years sharing an office with UK Peregrine but I haven't found that being at the Univ of Kentucky has diminished my support for BG. Its probably grown since I've been here. My time at BG is what got me here to UK, as one of the top students in my class. Pretty proud when I wear my BG gear, carry my BG coffee mug and then tell people about BG. In my dealing with many faculty and students I don't think I have ever had anyone look down at BG. In the grants I have written and submitted to NIH my education at BG has always drawn praise. Of course its also been my experience that unless you have an all IVY league education no one cares where you went to school, but rather what you've accomplished (research wise).

I could get season tickets for UK football (Basketball is a different story) but why, I'd prefer to save my money for one trip back to BG. I hope tomorrow is an awesome day with a blow out win for everyone. I'll be following the game however I can get it.

I know when I leave here at the end of this year, I will definitely miss BG. I have been here for 7 years. 4 years for my Bachelor's, 1 year off, and then 2 years for my Master's. Next year, I'll most likely be at either Ohio State, Kent State, or Cincinnati studying number theory. If BG had that program, I would stay here. I love it here. But, what can you do.

However, I'm pretty sure I'll have to make it back for a football game every so often, and if I'm at Kent, I'll definitely have to be there for the BG/Kent game, dressed in orange and brown.

I enjoy going to BG games for the game's sake. Varsity sports at Bowling Green are at a comfortable level for me. They're not blown out of proportion relative to academics. It's easy to get in and out of town as long as you plan to arrive at least one hour before game time. The band at the football games is entertaining, not the Riefenstahl production as at Columbus and other huge schools.

My wife and I are at a point in our lives where we can travel a lot, and the away games give us interesting trips. I've ridden 200 miles for a ice cream cone, so BG at Wherever has more interest than Dari Wip.

While a student at BG, I went to very few home games of any sport. I don't know why.

15 years after graduating from BG, I was sitting in front of the TV watching football and strange idea came upon me. Bowling Green is only about 90 minutes from my house. I bought a couple tickets and now I'm hooked.

I wish I would have realized the value in coming back sooner. There should definately be more advertising and promotions aimed at Alumni. Just find a hook to get them to return for one game. The number of alumni in the region should be sufficient to fill that stadium for every game.

And.. my four seats will be filled this weekend. That's one alumni and 3 friends/family. Get it? Reach 1 alumni and fill 4 seats.

I think that the move from school to the "real world" really does take people away from maintaining what many of us would consider an intimate connection with BG or even BG athletics. I liked the post that talked about how BG made them what they are, and that is true in many ways. Almost all of the memories make me chuckle when I think about them, but I do not have to relive them, or get tied into all of the homecoming events to appreciate my BG experience.

Then again, it was great to tell all of the Florida Gator fans I had to work with that at least BG was 1-0 in th SEC the year we beat Kentucky - and they were not close to that.

It's a fine balance, but the one thing that I do believe is that the people who come here to BG, particularly after considering some of the other campuses and their "feel," are all solid people. And that begins with not buying into different hype. The friends I made at BGSU are all people I can rely on.

If today's crowd is light, I'd blame the opponent.

Eastern Michigan? It puts cleaning the garage in a whole new light.

I'll be there today. But, look, any time Eastern Michigan is on the schedule -- if you are thinking about just making four out five home games, there's your fifth right there.

Eastern Michigan makes Southeast Missouri or Tennessee Tech look like great home games. Because, well, at least with SEMo or TTU, we've never seen them before and may never see them again. What colors do they wear? Does anyone know anything about Cape Girardeau?

But Eastern Michigan?

They keeps coming back.

Like clumps in a litter box.

Or spam about virility pills.

Or Ralph Nader.
