Knowing how bipolar this team is we'll probably beat Akron by 40, then god knows what we'll see against Miami.Strouse wrote:Hammb, I'm with you on all of that. I don't like the cannon being fired off at random after touchdowns. But in all honesty though, the percussion do a little cadence thing (which has been done for as long as I can remember) during the kick-off and I think the cannon being fired off is to try to go along with that. I don't honestly know...but either way, it should stop.
But yeah...at this point, we just need to move on and look towards Akron. I really hate to be Akron right now...BG just came off of a tough loss at home, we are better on the road then we are at home. I hope we just make a statement and get people to forget about that emu game.

I personally enjoy the band. They add atmosphere to the game and give it that special feel that I associate with going to the Doyt. Sure they may have played a bit too long sometimes, but when there are only 16,000 fans, mostly sitting on their hands, I don't think you are talking a serious disruption. Maybe if we were playing in front of 100,000 rabid fans, I think I'd be more likely to support your argument.
I am an alumni and a season ticket holder. I appreciate being able to sit in my chair back seat and enjoy the game from a seated position. I don't want to have to stand the whole game to see. I don't have a problem with people standing and bringing insane levels of energy to the game, but stand in appropriate sections! Where I sit, there are mostly us older folks and we just don't have the legs we used to! We still cheer and get into the game, it's just usually while sitting.
As it stands right now, the FMB was the best thing I saw Saturday afternoon! (Other than my fire steak from Mr.Spots after the game!) Thanks for being so spirited!
I think that some people on here need to calm down before they post things! We're all on the same side here. If you want to attack somebody, go find an Akron board and have at it!

I know some of you have already dealt with this, but I am an a-hole who can't let things slide...
Second - the "You are an accessory to the FOOTBALL game just like popcorn, the scoreboard, flush toilets, and the cannons they shoot t-shirts out of. " is a load of crap. MB is a credit course with students who cheer without being a-holes, enhance the gameday experience, and certainly don't think or act like they are THE most important thing there. Ask a Wisconsin fan what it was like to NOT have the band there (someone described it as "eerie" on the broadcast.)
Most of all - these are human beings, not toilets. These are students who work at the very minimum 10+ hours in class and 7 hours on gamedays...AND THEY PAY TO DO IT. To trivialize what they do is pretty crappy. "Football games are about football?" yeah they are. and band, and cheerleaders and tailgating and and and. Football is the most important but not the ONLY thing. Let's just take away what you don't like and just have a game.
There is a HUGE difference between playing long and actively trying to get attention from every person there at the expense of the football team. Believe me, if the band wanted attention and to distract, they could.
Fans like you are why people don't want to go to games. Not everyone is there for the game first. Sure, a majority is there to watch the football team, but a big number is there to see the band, be seen, be with friends, see the cheerleaders, etc.
I raise my middle finger in your direction. Not because you think the band shouldn't be center stage, but because you belittled what they did and the fans who do go to see them.
Your criticism was far too harsh for what actually happened. You compared the biggest supporters of this team to toilets. Apologize.
That is an insult to the band. For one, you can't compare that kind of stuff to the Wisconsin band garbage. And the FMB has ALWAYS been good about cutting off when we have the ball. Think! Good grief, what a lame complaint.Falcon137 wrote:+1BGfootballfan wrote:Remember band member. Remember, this is Bowling Green. Please put aside the band ego and NEVER play when BG has the ball especially when the QB is 40 yards away coming towards you trying to call s snap count and you must finish the American classic "Sweet Caroline". I think we should pull a Wisconsin and suspend both our band and PA announcer. Oh and suspending the coaching staff might not be a bad idea either.Bassdrummin wrote:get over it. seriously.
So in response, please tell your band mates to get over themselves.

Alright, I guess I'll be alone on this opinion, but here it goes. I honestly was not all that impressed with the halftime show. Maybe it's because I like halftime shows where the band plays very lively tunes and marches, creates formations, and looks structured. What I saw was people rolling around on the ground and dancing. I realize it was part of the act, but it didn't really make me cheer. I clapped because they sounded really good, like they always do. But...can we not look like the dance team out there?
Also, that exit left a lot to be desired. They started dancing to their seats, and I said, "Oh cool, they're going to finish over there. But, then they kept playing quieter and quieter, and it was almost as if the fans in my area had no idea if they should start clapping yet. It was more confusing than outstanding. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the big finish, but the band needed a curtain to pull across the field for their exit, because it seemed like they were dancing off the stage after a musical.
If you don't agree with me, that's fine. Like I said, this is my opinion.

I hate Sweet Caroline, and the fact that our fan base hasn't rebelled en masse against it's existence in our world. Hacky/stolen/forced/lame "tradition" that I wish I could immediately disremember. The band being forced to finish it while the ball is in play just makes it worse. I love the band, but they should never play after the in-play whistle has been blown.
The lack of porta-johns is nothing new, but still retarded. Other than that and the obvious, we had a great time.

FYI...I've said it before...but members within the FMB have tried our best to get Sweet Caroline out of our playing list. But unless I'm mistaken it was a decision made by the Athletic Department and I'm pretty sure that unless enough people complain to the AD about it, it won't get removed. Trust me in the fact that the FMB doesn't like it any more than you guys.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:I hate Sweet Caroline, and the fact that our fan base hasn't rebelled en masse against it's existence in our world. Complaining about the band??
What's the matter? You've run out of cool posts to make about how bad the team played.??
What annoyed me the most was the way that the crowd seemed to be sitting on thier azzes the whole game. But, that's what they want I guess. If we could get more local TV play they could just sit at home in thier favorite chair. No one would bother them by standing up during a third down situation.
Maybe the AD could develope an AZZ seating area where we could sit together and not bother the "folks" that keep the football program in business.

Not true, I always complain about the BAND at the FOOTBALL game. They play at the wrong times, and play music that no one on the field would ever get fired up over. No one playing football wa alive when the A-Team was on. C'mon, FOOTBALL game not band competition.Strouse wrote:The few of you who have responded to this and hate the fact that the FMB played a couple times longer than we should have represent a very small minority. Telling the band that it shouldn't be playing at all when BG has the ball is like telling the crowd that it needs to be completely silent at all times when BG has the ball. It's ridiculous. Besides, I'm almost certain that the majority of the football team would fight against statements like that. They enjoy having the FMB there. If you don't like a Big Game atmosphere then go elsewhere. Realize that yeah, the game sucked because we lost. But seriously think about this...would you be complaining about the FMB had we won? I highly doubt it.
Home team should never have the band playing when they are running a play. PERIOD. This is a complete joke, and no one should have to tell the band director this. Remember BAND, this is a FOOTBALL game, not all about you. We could have Gladieoux replace you too.

BGfootballfan - I think your caps lock keeps getting stuck.
In all seriousness... I broke a cardinal rule yesterday and committed a PUI(posting under the influence). However, I am not going to lie and say that this thread has not bothered me... I've been thinking about it constantly. I have come to the conclusion that I will have to respectfully disagree with some of the posters view of the band. The band has always tried to stay out of the limelight and be the 12th man on the field.
Hammb, I'm sorry this thread turned out the way it did, I'm sure you did not intend it.
As for myself, I am going to take a break from this board for a while. Will I be back... probably.... I love BG football way too much. However, being told that the band is as replaceable as toilets after spending approximately 1125 hours of my time (15 hours a week * 3 months * 5 years ... not counting games) has been a pretty harsh wakeup call. After hearing that, I am more than glad to leave this board.
I'll see everyone at the Akron game.

I had a guy behind me tell me to please sit down as he couldn't see on a BiG 3rd down play in the 2nd quarter. He was an older gentleman so I took it easy. But I won't sit on my butt when noise is needed on BiG plays and I didn't Saturday. I've had these seats for a long time and notice there are different people to my right and behind me every game now...they can't be season ticket holders.FortWayneFalcon wrote: What annoyed me the most was the way that the crowd seemed to be sitting on thier azzes the whole game. Anyway, I like to get up and get loud when needed. I don't stand every play like the students but for crying out loud, if a BiG play happens, I get excited.
What's a Freak to do....LOL.
And as far as the FMB?? Don't ever rip on them...they are a great band and I feel they do a great job. I hate Sweet Caroline with a passion but it isn't the band's fault they're forced to play that stupid song.

the only reason people go to football games for the smaller schools in the south is for the band. osu's traditional style band is boring and the dot the I thing is way overrated. you want a school that really cares about their band try florida a&m.[/quote]
That's not a cool comment. You might think that the dot the I is overrated, but the people that get to do it don't. Have some respect for others traditions. Personally, from a band performance perspective, I like osu's style.
