Marketing blah blah blah

Post by Schadenfreude »

I loathe posts that include sentences with "What (insert your favorite MAC team here) needs is better MARKETING!"

Gee. Blah blah blah. It wasn't MARKETING that put 30,000 people in the stands in 2003 for Northern Illinois and Toledo. Good football is always in demand.

Anyway.

In honor of all those posts that have annoyed me over the years -- and most of you all know what I'm talking about -- I just wanted to note that my Time Warner cable bill for this month includes a coupon offering almost half off the price of a ticket for the upcoming Bowling Green-Miami or Bowling Green-Kent State games.

Keep in mind: I live in Columbus. These coupons are right next to discounts for a Blue Jackets game and a tour of the Bob Evans farm in Rio Grande.

It made me smile, seeing BG football right next to the Blue Jackets in a promotional brochure. Just as it makes me smile to tune into the football games on AM 1230 here in Columbus.

My point: It's worth keeping in mind that there are people working their butts off to sell people a football team that blew its last home game to Eastern freakin Michigan.

My hat is off to them.

Ball State last year had buy one, get one coupon's for any athletic event in the back of the phone book. Thought that was a pretty sharp move on their part.

Akron is selling $1 vouchers for tickets at local drug stores for the final game at the Rubber Bowl. $1? Seriously? I hope we never do that! EMU did $5 tickets for senior night last season and still had fewer fans in green than orange.

The lady in the ticket booth at the Rubber Bowl yesterday asked me if I had a Giant Eagle card? I show it to her and I got a $5 general admission ticket ($12 regular price).

They do market around BG...they ads and coupons are gone by the time you show up.

As much as Todd Walker drops the Time Warner name during broadcasts, the deal is not surprising. At one point, I think he went from "First down Falcons, that's another Time Warner First Down!", to eventually, "He stretched the ball out, trying to get a Time Warner First Down".

Very cool to see them pushing it in Columbus (and I assume other Ohio markets, as well.)

I had Wide Open West when I lived down there.

I wonder if BG paid anything for it, or if it is part of the marketing deal that blissfully replaced the evil screech.

I received the same coupon in my Time Warner bill here in Ottawa. I also know that all Boy Scout troops in NW Ohio have been extended the $9 ticket offer for the Buffalo game and if they're crazy enough they can camp out over night on the field. I'm assuming campfires will be prohibited. :)

That would depend. Mitch had a fire last Saturday night after the EMU game in an "off the ground" fire pit. No one said a word....

I think doug was talking about camping on the playing field. I'd be pretty shocked if they let them have fires on the field, even in an off the ground fire pit. That just doesn't seem like a good idea at all to me.
