Checking from behind penalties

Post by cw08 »

What's with our guys always getting these called against them?

I didn't see the footage or anything, but refs don't just call those penalties for the fun of it. I think it's a cause for concern. I think they racked up a few last season, and picking one up in the first game this year ain't good.

Nice win, though.

The checking from behind is something that the CCHA sucks at calling. NCAA says if a check is from behind, into the boards or net, it's supposed to be an automatic 5 minute major and game misconduct or game disqualification (ref's discretion). Many times, the refs will call something like boarding or cross-checking so they don't have to give the 5 minute major. Our guys don't just lay there after getting hit. They get up and keep going. I've seen a lot of great acting jobs lately trying to draw a penalty.

The call on Sinkewich last night was absolutely horrible. The RIT player was going straight for Spratt and never made an attempt to stop. All Sinkewich did was get in between him and Spratt. The guy didn't even act like he was in pain when he came back on the ice from the locker room.

The last penalty called last night should have been called a checking from behind. I can't remember who it was, but his head was the first thing to hit the boards, and his back was square to the RIT player. The ref only called cross-checking because he got up and kept going. If he would've played it out a little and just laid there, it probably would've been called more.

If you want to know a little bit about checking from behind you could probably ask Kai Kantola. Maybe you could bring up his hit last year against Notre Dame.

I think you're taking it far too lightly. They should call it on borderline plays. It's meant to be a preventative measure.
Going head-first into the boards is pretty painful, and can be life-threatening.

I absolutely hate the way the penalty is called now. No consistency whatsoever. I've seen no calls that are far worse than what's actually called. Too many times it comes down to the referee wanting more control of the game. Now that there's two of them, it's gonna be even worse.

I agree with you. It is comparable to the football rule on "excessive celebration". I have seen checks from behind called when the player who is hit...lightly, looses an edge or self controll and pounds the boards have a call made, when in the same a guy who is clearly drilled by a guy who made run him...yet manages to protect himself from injury get no call..
My point is simple...its either a check from behind or its not, the result is not causation for the call, its the initial action, and its either from behind or not.
