Utah was there before that, but now nobody really hears about them. If you're in a non-BCS conference, you have to hope you get an excellent coach that is really good at recruiting, convince him to stay at the smaller school that can't pay the BCS dollars, and hope that the national attention you gain from this makes higher profile bowl games swing your way and makes recruiting the bigger name players that much easier.
Well said, footballguy51...but I don't think our misguided friend understands. It is MUCH harder on the non BCS level to stay at or near the top on a yearly basis.

Maybe ... but I can assure you of this - he loves Brandon and will root for the Falcons harder every day. We love the Falcons!

I guess I should have listed the entire quote from "footballguy51." His entire rant is about how Brandon has done a "fairly good job" and is "willing to give him the oportunity to improve this team to the next level." He finishes up that thought with the "remember we're a MAC school and not a huge powerhouse" comment.

Who said we're looking for a National Championship here? Hell, I am just looking to compete in the MAC each year! I have every reason to believe we should expect to be a "powerhouse" in our own Conference most years. Those should be our expectations for this program. Makiing excuses about how "were only a MAC school" don't fly with me. As Bobby Knight said this week, we've become a society where not only do we except mediocrity but we embrace it.

An interesting post to revisit at midseason.

I still think a small extension was necessary. I also still hope the buyout number is very low.

All those GB-backers saying this was a "watershed" year for him, for the third year in a row no less, are any of you joining us on the dark side?

I'm not calling out Falconfreak with this post.

I'm quoting him simply because he expressed where my head was at at the time (only I was too busy mourning the GMAC Bowl debacle to actually poke my head in here and post about it.)

Brandon took us to the GMAC Bowl and he deserved an extension. I thought it then. I stand by it today -- even though I'm quite miserable about Falcon football right now.

hammb wrote:You had to extend or fire him, and I think they did enough this year to deserve another year. That said, I wouldn't give him more than one additional year and I would keep the buyout as low as possible. I still think he's a mediocre or below coach, but they improved enough this season to deserve a shot at a MAC title next year.

I still think anything less than a MAC title in '08 is grounds for firing him. Then again I don't put a lot of stock in being a "consistent winner' against the craptastic conference we play in. The MAC has become a total joke and we've actually lost ground to the rest of the conference in his tenure.

Still, he deserves an additional year to prove me wrong. Do I think he'll do it? No, because I don't think he's a very good coach. At this point though we're paying one of the lowest salaries in D1-A, and you get what you pay for.

Hopefully the buyout is feasible.
Reading through this entire topic was a good read for me after today's game. This post was a favorite of mine.

My statement when the first extention thread popped up at the end of the season: he's deserved the extension and, at the time, he did. This year has proved to be some karmic penance.

Firings and payout clauses aren't within a department budget like ours vs. say...a Clemson, or probably very soon a Tennessee's.

Anybody got a copy of the contract? What about demotions though back to OC.

And in a weird twist of role reversals, here is the successor's resume with just the one bullet point as the main consideration for the job:

Studrawa held the position of offensive coordinator at Bowling Green from 2003-06, overseeing some of the top offenses at both the national and Mid-America Conference level during that time. (as lifted from LSUSports.net)
There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!

I am quite disappointed in how this season has gone, true. Pitt was nice, EMU and Miami weren't. I do, though, keep my faith in the coaches. The team did pull a nice finish last year when it often looked hopeless. I fully believe that the capability is there for a repeat performance for the end of the regular season. I said some things to people after the game that were quite knee-jerk reactions and I'll admit that, and I apologize if Brandon or anybody else caught wind of my comments. I just want to see this program win, and I do think that Brandon has the capability and this team is capable of doing that this season. Now let's go neuter some Huskies! :D

Its not that they lost, its how they lost.

Underachieving teams are the coaches fault.

I've been really supportive of Brandon and Co. since I've been here but I have to agree, BG is underachieving way too much this season, and it isn't the players. For the last three weeks, yes Akron included, the play-calling has been questionable at best. We can't have 12 running backs per game. Bullock runs well when he has it....which is like 3 times a game, and our plays are so predictable that my girlfriend, who knows nothing about sports, has even said what plays they are going to run next...and then they fail. Last year the playcalling weighed heavily on our strengths and I haven't seen that this year.

Drop Brandon, bring in Tommy Bowden ;-)

There is no way Bowden will work for the money we would offer a head coach. The guy who I would like to see run our team is Tulsa's offensive coordinator. He would fit into a philosophy we had with Urban and GB. Plus it would be fun to see what trick he would pull out next.
