On whether there is any panicking to still be a contender in the MAC

"Nobody's panicking there are five football games left. We very easily could have won that game because it was a game of momentum. If we were getting blown out of games then yea but we're not. It's the same thing that I told them after Akron, we need to be a more consistent and disciplined football team. That's been hurting us when we lose."

The first one is still the truth. Win out, we win the East, most likely. Unfortunately, we haven't shown the consistency to win week in and week out, and we've squandered our "mulligans" on teams we should have beaten. Buffalo is a dangerous team and the way our run defense has played, Kent State and OU are toss-ups. NIU and of course UT won't be easy, regardless of some of the stinkers the Rockets have put up here and there this year.

But if he went the other way (and the way I figure many of you would hope and expect) and said "That's it, we had our chance, we're done", I'd have an issue with it.

The penalties comment is concerning in that the personal fouls have become a trend. If he wants to have the "then bench 'em" philosophy, then great. But when do you start? And personally, I'd make them pay for it on the practice field before it has a chance to be an issue during a game, especially for the "after the whistle" type fouls. As hammb pointed out in another thread, I'd hate to take D. Briggs off the field for something like that, but there has to be SOMETHING to get it through his head that he has to play smarter out there.

I haven't listened to any of our postgame shows this year, so I haven't heard any immediate reactions, but I have heard coach Brandon on 1470 on Monday evenings. What's really frustrated me lately has been his comments that there are not many blowouts in college football anymore and we cannot expect them. He keeps harping that the only thing we can hope for is to be in a position to win the game in the 4th quarter.

I don't know why, but those comments seem very defeatist to me...not something I like to hear from a head coach.

Gee whillakers, we tried out best. Darn it all to heck we just couldn't quite get it done this time, but we're trying really hard guys! It's not our fault, sometimes you just lose and there's nothing we can do about it. I promise we'll try real hard next time, guys. We might not win, but golly gosh gee we'll give it the 'ol college try!

I'm not a Brandon-Basher by far...but someone correct me if I'm wrong...but according to that statement...the entire team should be benched...and the coaches should be benched as well. We don't have the pride that we once had. Several years ago, the team would walk out onto the field with a swagger that they could be proud of, a swagger that they earned by beating people and doing it with pride. Losing games and then being unsportsmanlike about it is just outright ridiculous and it should stop which is where this next quote comes in.

Actually I feel that it's been hurting us even when we win. Now I don't know how the team acts when they are the visiting team as I have not yet been to an away game yet but the on- and off-field crap that's been going on this year just kind of puts a huge shadow over the wins we've had this year. This team can do better...they just need coaches to actually discipline them.

It seems like we put more effort into our activity after the play then during it. That and the pregame garbage that was mentioned in another thread. Suddenly we act like old Miami Hurricane teams. So are we a team full of thugs? It is starting to look more and more like it.

Brandon seems to think that being in these games in the 4th quarter equals a great team effort. If that is his philosophy then I expect we will win two more games. A couple will bounce our way, a couple will not. He states that two games does not eliminate us. So freakin what! We have played the easiest MAC slate of any team and we are 1-2. Get a clue.

He makes a very good point. Glad to see someone other than the members of this board making this point. The "little" stuff during the week leads to big problems on Saturday. Those little things like missing meetings and big things like allowing guys that commit major crimes to remain on the team are making this season worthless.

When your quarterback has to come out and start making these comments in a paper, it tells you something some people have not wanted to hear.

I wasn't actually mad about anything until I read the weekly babble from Brandon. He isn't a great communicator, I understand that, and it isn't a fatal flaw in and of itself. However the body of his public comments over the years simply leaves me wanting to use stronger terms to describe my view of him, and I am not yet at the point of doing so.

Those kids on the field, off the field, in the papers, all show what I consider to be signs of no leadership. And I mean that in a coaching context. They are swaying wildly to frustration on the field, stunts like the gate incident, Sheehan's comments, and so on. They are struggling to find somebody with an answer, and they aren't finding them with the coaches. It is all a sign of a program not firmly in the hands of its coaches.

That scares me a little. I dread the issues that are lurking out of site within this program.

I figure the same thing Warthog. I cannot remember hearing about a guy missing a start or a game because they missed a team meeting. If that crap is happening the guys in question should be getting punished. The whole team should be getting punished.

Seems to me that the players Sheehan might be refering to are the exact same type of guys the Meyer ran off when he got here. But the current coach allows this guys to go on unchecked.
