Why is no one trying to take Amstutz?

Why aren't bigger schools trying to lure Amstutz away from the Univeristy of Little Detroit? He's been successful a lot longer than Brandon, and he's had at least one offer made (or at least alluded to). It doesn't make any sense to me. Does he have some sort of fungal condition that only other AD's know about or somethign?

My Dad and I was talking about this last night. We both said the reason he is not recruited is because of his weight. Its a shame, but he all know its true. Is there any school out there were it would be appropriate to have a large guy coach. I was thinking Utah. They took the over-weighted, and I do mean overweight Rick Majerus from Ball State. Maybe AMSTUTZ should go out there, he would fit in well.

But even if Amstutz was offered another job I dont think he would take it. He has lived in Toledo his whole life. I really dont understand why he is so big. He is a coach, doesn't he run or do drills with his team. His daughter played HS basketball, didn't he play with her. You think he would be in better shape then he really is. It would be a shame for something to happen to him like what happened to Majerus

Has he been anywhere other than TU?

If not, that might be a reason (not sure it's a good one) other schools are shying away from him. No diversity.

Amstutz grew up in Toledo, played football for UT, now has coached at UT 25 out of the last 28 years (brief 3 year stint at Navy from 87-89), and is now 49 years old. His age is a factor, but mostly that fact that most schools think he is perfectly happy where he is and at this stage of live is not looking for the challenge of rebuilding a downtrodden program.

'72 started to hit on the reason schools aren't after Amstsutz, and it's not because he's overweight. It's his ties to Toledo. He is a life long Toledoian and this was his dream job. Amstutz’ was on the team back in '73 and was a student assistant back in '77. He left as an assistant for Navy from 1987-89 and a one-week stint at Missouri in 2000, other than that Amstutz has never worked or lived anywhere else.

As he stated himself, “When you stay and work hard, good things happen,” he said. “That’s a good lesson for the players to look at. I started at Toledo by bringing in the coffee and rolling up the mats. I was a position coach, then a coordinator, then the assistant head coach. It’s just hard work and believing in the program. That’s why I’m here.”

“I remember watching those great Toledo teams with Chuck Ealey and Mel Long,” said Amstutz. “And I remember thinking, I want to be the coach here some day. I didn’t even realize there was a whole staff of assistant coaches. I just knew there was a coach and I wanted to do that.”

This is why no one goes after him. He's shown no desire what's so ever to leave Toledo. It's damn near impossible to pull coaches from their alma mater.

Its just plain hard to beat-up on a happy fat guy.

I can't figure how anybody could be so in love with Mini-troit U. or the city it is in, to want to stay that long. I'm a reformed native of the area, and I can't even figure it out.

In some cases, I think it is a problem for that school. The have a coach the entire staff knows will never go anyplace. So you know you won't get lifted up to a major conference team as you would with an Urban Meyer. It wouldn't be an attractive job working under Stutz the Hutt.....beyond the literal. In a don't year like this in the MAC, you can look real good though, and I'd figure some of that staff departs again this year.

Does Amstutz have a lot of turn over with his assistants? That's what I'm reading from your post.

The guy's record as head coach is pretty incredible...

That makes a lot of sense. Still, though, is it the same case with Darnell at the Huntington Correctional and Educational Facility and Hoep down at Miami? I realize that they are older, but with so many teams every year looking for coaches, usually with mid-major coaching experience, I really don't understand why BG has to be the new "Cradle of Coaches." I realize that Brandon doesn't have any ties to BG or the MAC, but why is it every other coach in the MAC seems at least relatively content with their salaries and our coaches seem to be looking only for the money and bigger opportunities. I have a few ideas but I'm curious to see what you guys think.

Also, what do you think we can do to remand this situation?

I wouldn't say he has a lot of turn-over. Though he has had a few go now and then.

The other side of the coin is that he might not attract the really top assistants, in part because he is a static figure at that school. You know going in, that you won't get taken to a bigger school under him. You will have to really shine to get much attention, especially if things don't go well.
