Status of the Cannon repair fund raising drive?
Status of the Cannon repair fund raising drive?
I've noted the poster at the games, saying the cannon needs 2k in repairs, otherwise it'll be retired.
Can anybody speak as to the progress, or lack of it, which we've seen?

I'll donate to the return of the Victory Bell, never really got in to the cannon.
Other than the rings that sometimes came out I was mostly annoyed the presence of the thing.
I'll also donate and perhaps even help spearhead a campaign for a Doyt Perry statue either outside of the stadium or near the player entrance. I was watching a game recently, can't remember which one, but a life sized bronze statue reportedly cost the school $250,000. I think that is a figure that could be raised through a "grass roots" effort that would be really cool to be a part of. . . Haven't gotten to the point of laying out a plan of action or model yet, but on first glance I think it is doable.

I can't recall a single announcement at the games, and the poster never shows any donations.

What if it were CMU we were playing, and the concussion kills the punter. Who happens to be fat.Flipper wrote:I declined to donate when asked because I think it's bush league to shoot the damn thing when the opposition is trying to return a kick off.

Giant water slide for the poolprofessorjackson wrote:People can do with their money whatever they want, and as faculty perhaps I'm a little biased, but I'd rather see money go to the core mission of the university, not cannons or statues.
How about fixing the AC in Eppler so the water doesn't drip onto the desk 2 rows back.....it's like Chinese water torture in there.

It will be interesting to know what all exactly will be going into the Falcon Plaza, which I think is supposed to connect the Doyt and Stroh Center. I know details have been vague, but I'm just really anxious to hear what the plans are. Who knows? Maybe a bronze statue is already planned to be a part of this. Anyone have any new details?
I see your Swartz is as big as mine!
I'm curious myself, I thought the Stroh (beer) center was supposed to be deep in the parking lot south-west of DLP.
If you mean there will be a large park like place that spans from the south end of the stadium, I can see that.
I wonder about the future of the soccer practice fields in any case. I'd rather they build the center in the south endzone area, extending into the field used for overflow parking.

I like the idea of full size statutes of both Perry and Anderson and Busts of the great athletes. One added every Football home game.

I like having a cannon.
I feel sorry for the opposing team's kick returners, though, especially when they are trying to return balls from the south end zone. My guess is that we've generated at least one turnover because of that cannon. And that doesn't seem like fair play.
But on TDs and even field goals? Sure. Fire away. I think it's fun.
