Some Historical Perspective Heading in to Fri's Game

Post by Dayons_Den »

Some numbers to consider when looking at this Friday's big game vs. Buffalo. I was going to write something a little more eloquent on the blog rather than just spout the numbers, but alas the head cold that was making it's rounds in our office tapped me this morning....

GREGG BRANDON ERA (INCLUDING 2008 GAMES):
When GB's BG teams have more than 7 days to prepare the Falcons are 12-9, including bowl games and season-openers.

GB's teams are 3-2 on regular season home finales.

GB's teams in the month of November are 13-6, including 6-0 this season and last.

FALCON FOOTBALL HISTORY:
BG is 25-17 in regular season home finales at Doyt L. Perry Stadium

Coaches of note regular season home finale records:

Urban Meyer 2-0
Gary Blackney 5-4-1
Moe Ankney 3-2
Denny Stolz 5-4
Don Nehlen was 5-4 in home finales
Bob Gibson 2-1
Doyt L. Perry, the man, was 7-3 for his regular season home finales.
Robert H. Whittaker 8-4-2 (after starting his career 7-0)
Warren Steller 6-2-3

Good job Dayons...you are stating good things about Brandon. However. no one will reply to this kind of thread. Not negative enough...nothing about our losses to Eastern and Miami.

He's not stating good things about coach Brandon at all. He's just pointing out some stats. They're interesting, but I don't find them particularly noteworthy, except for the fact that we're 6-0 the last 2 seasons in November. Good job rallying the troops after completely deflating the fanbase each of the last two seasons.

The rest of the numbers? They aren't that special. 12-9 with greater than 7 days to prepare isn't that great. You would expect a better winning percentage than .571 when you're given extra time. In many of those games the other team is not getting that same luxury, but oftentimes we are starting the season against tough opponents, so that might be a wash. His 3-2 in home finales is right on par with our historical average.

The numbers are interesting, I suppose, but I just don't see anything in them that is really good or bad about coach Brandon.

I know you've got an ax to grind, because you are infatuated with coach Brandon, but the facts are the facts. The first 2 years we were a good team under Coach Brandon. Once the mystique of the Meyer era left we have been a .500 team in a poor MAC. Obviously that is good enough for you. That's fine, you can embrace mediocrity and love it. I'm happy for you that you're so easily pleased, must make it much easier to go through life. For me, I'd actually like to see some real success.

I think the moral of the story is that we can't give up on the team until they are at least mathematically out of the MAC title race.

If that statement sounds like hypocrisy coming from me, it probably is because I am yet to learn the same lesson.

What's a matter with you people!

We have a chance to position winning the East and get to the MACC. While a MACC doesn't hold as much cache' with me as getting to a Bowl game, its still important whether we were 6-0 or where were at now...the stakes are still the same.

As for 6pm start time? They are called vacation days and after years of leaving days on the table, I'm using a full one on Friday!

Somebody get me a thermos!
There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!

Hell yeah, Swoop! I just started a new job 3 1/2 weeks ago and have no vacation...but made sure I told my supervisors I would be "out of town" on 11/21 and 11/28. I didn't lie. :-D

This hasn't been the glorious season most of us thought it could be...no question. BUT....we are two wins away from playing for the title. Sure as hell beats packing it in and playing out the season.
